Saying "a few animals can survive temporarily in the absence of oxygen" is sort of like saying "a few animals can swim" or "a few animals eat meat". There are countless animals that survive temporarily in anoxic environments. For example a vast number of insects begin their life in the oxygen depleted (often anoxic) environments of lake sediments.

The thing is that multicellular organisms require a lot more energy than unicellular organisms and for that there's the citric acid cycle. However there's no citric acid cycle without oxygen. This is the reason we haven't found any multicellular anoxiphiles (?) so far. I think. BTW there's a horrible mistake on the second sentence of the original article and they say it went thru peer-review. WTF! Hint: google "anoxia tolerance"

I'm thinking what Phoebe did to her bullies is infinitely worse than what they did to her. Imagine growing up knowing that you pushed a classmate over the edge and in a way caused her death. I used to feel horrible because back in elementary school me and a bunch of others bullied this one poor kid for 6 fucking years. Eventually I came to terms with it. I was, like most kids, a fucking retard shithead. Thankfully most of us become better human beings as we mature. And what about Phoebe's little sister and her parents? Did she think how they'd feel as they found her hanging? Did she consider that they might feel a hell of a lot worse than she ever did? Why did she kill herself? Was it a "I'll fucking show them" kind of act and was she really that desperate? Whatever she went thru really doesn't seem to be that big of a thing.. but what do I know. Nobody ever threw a red bull can at me. One year a kid in a school bus bullied me for some months in a row, but I was all passive about it. That is until one day he spat on me. I stood up and punched him in his face. The bullying ended that day..

The other day I watched this documentary "Race and Intelligence" in which they asked the same question (and also why certain Asian Americans score higher than European Americans). In it they didn't deny that there's a genetic component to IQ (as measured by IQ-tests). Twin studies clearly show that genes play a part. However they argued that the difference was mostly due to sub-cultural differences (like for example blacks might refer reading books as a white thing and thus don't really do it as much as whites). In the documentary they talked about Flynn effect (rise of IQ-test scores over generations) and how African Americans are gaining on European Americans (their scores are rising more). Is this a reflection of black and white American cultures becoming more similar?

If they're somewhat similar to ones found from Earth then just sequence genome DNA. Pretty similar to something from Earth? Well then odds are that they're indeed from Earth. Otherwise you've got a Martian.
