Had an outage a couple of weeks after install. I wasn't home so didn't even notice. Got an email crediting me for the day and showed up on next bill. It sucks that there are outages but it's nice that they give credit for them.
even when my cable modem has been out for days. I tend to not care since I'm rarely ever home. It was once out for 2 weeks because the modem got disabled and I didn't need it for those 2 weeks. One annoying thing is they HAVE to go through their standard checklist, even if you told them you had already done everything on the list. When I got the cable modem, it came with a whole sheet of things to check when the Ready light on the cable modem was blinking (no connection). The very last thing is call tech support. The only times I ever called tech support was to get them to send a signal to enable my modem. It can get frustrating if you happen to call when their tech support center was closed since it forwards you to a national 1-800 tech support center where they cannot do anything at all to help you besides take down your information and forward it to your local provider. I've never had a job as tech support, but many people are constantly asking me for help with their computers. I get extremely frustrated and end up just going over to fix the problem myself, explain to them why they had it, and how to avoid it in the future. I've gotten so tired of this, that half the time my response is to go find someone else. Especially if the question they are asking is extremely simple, but requires alot of work to explain and go through. Sometimes I wish I never mentioned I was good with computers to some people. It is made quite obvious whenever I play around on someone's machine though. Anyways, I have to feel sorry for tech support people. I do my part by trying to avoid calling unless it is absolutely necessary.
ok, well, most of the comments above, i don't care about, i don't agree, but that's because i'm not in a big corporation, hell, i saw a figure that showed the music industry actually increased their profit last year!! anyways, this comment got me "anti-Christian bigotry", what's wrong with being anti-christian that's not wrong with being like anti-atheist? u should specify more clearly, i personally do not like christianity, i do have many friends who are christians because i don't let something silly like religion stop me from doing it, the normal arguments i give to be anti-christian is to look at all they've given us:), they gave us such wonderful things as the Spanish Inquisition and The Crusades, and still refuse to allow the use of any type of birth control, yet i'd bet most unwanted pregnancies are in christians, i know some christians who have no problem with going and getting drunk and having sex with anybody just for the hell of it, i consider myself above those ppl, i don't drink, don't party, rarely have sex (too busy), and i truly don't care about those things as they are all minor parts of life that i don't see as being necessary for survival (except the sex part), i'm happy as long as i'm in front of my computer doing what i love to do (programming), anyways, next time be more specific in your comments
anyways, more on topic, i see this as an attempt to stop another napster type prog from spreading around and becoming popular, i actually like the idea of the program, and was eagerly awaiting for the source so i could play around with making a linux port, all most of these big corporations really care about is their profits, they don't care who they screw over as long as it gives them a nice profit increase, i think they see programs of this type as threats to the artists & creators when they're not, anyways, that's enough of my pointless talking, gotta get back to work!
A friend of mine is the main computer person at his high school (pretty laughable actually). Almost all of their machines are really old and outdated. All of the machines run either Windows 95 or Windows 98 (one machine has Windows 2000 Professional on it). Their books they have on computers are so old just about everything in them is outdated. Due to this, the school asked my friend to write up his own books on computers. My friend asked for my help. In the books we do plan to have quite a bit of Linux and Unix information and resources. We believe this will help the students at his school learn more about computers other than just the normal Windows stuff everybody else knows. We have tried time and time again to convince his supervisor to let us put Linux or FreeBSD on at least one machine, but he refused to even listen to us. He is also the one who has the computer with Windows 2000 on it. I really don't see why he would have such a problem with having one machine with Linux on it. They have over 30 computers in the lab. They could easily just seperate it from the rest of the computers and let my friend teach other students how to use it and the basics of it. I think the main problem his supervisor had with Linux was he thought it was DOS! We tried to explain it to him that it was nothing like DOS and also that there is a GUI for Linux called X Windows, but unfortunately he still refuses to allow us to install Linux on any of the computers. Of course we will continually try to convert at least one of the machines to Linux until my friend graduates sometime in April. Just sharing the experience I have had with trying to get Linux or some other operating system besides Windows or MacOS into a school.
My computer got the leap year right. My watch thinks it's March 1:) of course that's probably because my watch does not store the year, so no way it could know it's a leap year. anyways, what i didn't get...in the articles (the one in german and the one on yahoo) it said that it was causing systems to crash, wouldn't it just cause them to report the wrong date?? i'm not too sure as the biggest problem i've had with the leap year is my watch
rather than sit there and enjoy X-files (been a VERY long time since i've done that), i ended up sitting there staring at the chick in leather:P i mean, what heterosexual guy could not look at her? i personally wouldn't mind fighting her, even tho i'd guaranteed get the crap kicked outta me, anyways, X-files haven't been that good for quite awhile now, i still watch it hoping that some day they will have another interesting episode to watch, btw, i think it'd be kewl to have a virtual game like that, just reminds me of star trek's holodeck, just not as realistic, of course that episode of x-files is supposed to take place in the current time while star trek is in the distant future, ok, well i've rambled long enough, x-files is kinda boring right now, but that chick was hot!!
that's what i thought at first, but i DID call up my local circuit city, asked if they had that specific model (AD-600A) and they said they did have them for $169.99 so you're probably looking at the wrong model number
i'm a RoadRunner customer (another cable modem company), they don't allow servers either, i've been using it since October, and i've had them do a portscan on my machine ONE time, and i DID have things running on those ports (ie: smtp, pop3, www, telnet, ftp, etc) because i didn't feel like shutting them down everytime i booted my machine, anyways, this was back in november, i have yet to hear anything from then in anyway at all, guess they don't care much about ppl running server programs?? the thing i see funny about them scanning such ports are they also block them themselves! so i really see no point in scanning those ports, i've done some testing, and with the way it's set up in my block, not even a friend of mine who also uses roadrunner can access those ports, also, i don't think much of anything comes or goes from the local roadrunner's news server, because the system it is on is pretty horrible from what i hear, besides that it's also the mail server, my friend told me for the news server u need a quite powerful machine, but for mail it doesn't really matter, heck, i usually get speeds approx 20-40k/s from the mail/news server, that's not good compared to the usual of 80-150k/s i get when accessing their web server (seperate machine), anyways, i think the current cable modem companies out there just plain suck, would get a T1, but i don't have the $1900 a month to pay for it:( anyone willing to pay for one for me??? *egrin*
ok, well, i hate AOL because it allows even the non-techy of ppl to get online, some think this is good, it's fine with me until they start going onto all of the good chat places and most of them cannot speak an entire sentence correctly, that's why it's not good for some non-techies to get online, of course there are some ppl out there who like AOL and don't do these kinds of things, but there are alot of ppl using AOL who really lack in the area of computer knowledge and the internet in general, how many ppl have actually used AOL? i've used it, u go into a chat room once, u get tossed onto TONS of mailing lists, i went onto a chat room more than a year ago, haven't gone back, still get spam from these mailing lists, there's too many annoying things with AOL, for one u can't use it on linux, because there isn't enough demand for it, of course, only reason i would use AOL from linux is because i wouldn't be paying for it anyways, i'd never pay for something as crappy as AOL.
on new years eve, but i also didn't go to any parties, i was invited to a few, but i've been to new years eve parties before, they were all boring, why was this one supposed to be different?? just because the year was going to 2000?! i didn't see it as a big deal, i knew my computer was gonna keep working, instead i sat around watching south park, playing on my computer, and drank wine with my brother, all in all was just a normal night for me, except the internet was rather nicely empty, got some nice high speeds and used that time to get around to d/l'ing stuff i'd been meaning to get, anyways, if i could have, i would've worked on new years eve, hell, i'd work xmas day if they gave me the choice, but i don't have a very important job, and the office i work in we only work m-f and we ALWAYS get holidays off, if i had a good computer related job, i wouldn't mind working on holidays, besides that i don't really celebrate much of anything anyways, i see it all as a waste of time.
from the way i see the linux kernel, as long as your video card works good for u, the kernel doesn't need to mess with the video card alot, leave that to the grahics libraries to do, that's why u don't see much of anything in the kernel configuration about graphics, about the only thing i think the kernel might have to do with agp is provide access to that stuff to other progs, but isn't htat why there's graphics libraries?? i'm no kernel or linux expert tho, so this is just what i think, more than likely not the real facts.
I think User Friendly is funny. Hell, I've had some of those problems:P and I just know everytime I call up tech support, someone there is just laughing about what i screwed up this time, ooh well, at least someone's getting a laugh outta me screwing my computer up, hehe

They also own HGST.
This reminds me of Spaceballs the Movie.
Spaceballs the Toilet Paper!
Spaceballs the Flamethrower!
I need one of those.....
