"Does anyone know if the folks at NASA checked their Voyager ideograms on folks living in remote areas, far away from most industrialized humans?"
Yeah, but they just kept shrugging and saying `non` !

I think we use base 10 cos we have 10 fingers. Couldn`t we work out a max number of fingers aliens are likely to have and use all of them? (one to a page)?
Well, what are they going to do about it? By the time they`ve come here to beat us up, we`ll be dead anyway! Something for our children to worry about!:)
"This is stupid. You all know that without banner ads, the web wouldn't be what it is today. "
Slow and bloated with loads of useless companies clogging up bandwith with animated gifs for their rubbish that people only click on by accident, or because they`ve made them look like windows controls? Yeah, where would we be without ads on the net! (At least if they replaced content, like on tv, you could go take a dump or skin up or something!)
"I don't doubt that users of such software as Junkbuster would be more than happy to steal the content just like they steal their music and software, but their behavior negatively affects those of us who do wish to play by the rules."
I dont like ads, so i block them with Junkbuster (and the blocklist at www.waldherr.org).
I like music, so i buy cds (mp3`s sound fucking terrible).
I think you should be able to mod AND post whenever. To stop abuses, fix it so you cant mod until you`ve posted a number of posts which havent been modded down too much. And make the meta-mod system able to suggest to CmdrTaco (or whoever) that bad moderators lose their ability to mod (for a while).
I have to admit that i dont really care why the laws are there (protecting profit, enrich the public, or whatever).
The effect they have is to make it possible to prosecute people who copy things which other people have created, such as books, films, music.
What is wrong with that? What would be the incentive to write a book/album/article (for profit, so you can eat and buy a house and travel and look after yourself) if the minute you finished it it ended up on a bunch of websites?
And don`t say `they`d do it for fun` - thats just an `i live at home with my parents` answer.
..that (c) law is bad, you`ll get this sort of thing happening all over the place. Are we going to get 2 or 3 of these stories for every country in the world, followed by thousands of `ooh, its just not fair` comments? Its certainly going to waste a lot of bandwidth. How many people complaining actually do anything about it? If not, you may as well s.t.f.u., for all the good its going to do.
You may appreciate some of these laws if you actually create something, rather than just leech it like a fucking parasite.
What? Sir, are you suggesting that spending $600 on a graphics card, to make all those 3d car games/shooters/etc is a waste of money? You`d only waste it on a ps2 and a bunch of dvds!
Actually i`m sure i read somewhere that the u.k. has a cheaper phone service overall, because of strange american pricing (ie much more expensive to call across state than long distance, and other anomolies). Anyone heard this, or is it just `friends of bt` talking out of their bottoms?
"But despite similar techniques being available for programming, coders still stick to their "tried and tested" methods of programming which owe less to science and more to guesswork. Rather than using formal techniques to ensure that code is 100% correct, they would rather just sit down and knock something out that sort of works. And this has led to the proliferation of buggy and insecure software we see today. "
You dont program, do you.
Programming is usually an iterative process - write a bit, test it, change the spec a little, write some more etc etc. This is before the user gets to see it. Then it goes through another set of the above.
"there are ways to properly fight the misuse of advertising, including ignoring advertising-sponsored content. but blocking that advertising is nothing but stealing. (and yes, it is stealing despite the fact that it's "digital." it's stealing bandwidth)."
Sniff...sniff sniff....ah, the fragnant smell of bullshit. The internet IS free; if you want to put ads on it, fine, but dont expect me to pay to see them.
No! Dont! It doesnt work! "All analogy is fraud" as someone once said. You cant compare copying to stealing, it just doesnt make sense! People have an attachment to their house and property that they just dont have to a bunch of files.
"It is strange to see how people who have too little interest in the case to actually read the judgement (even though it is easily available and written in plain English), somehow feel able to firmly state that the judges decission is in error"
You always get that! We (in england) regularly have criminal cases going through the courts, and at the end people often say `oh, thats wrong, they should have done that`.
If people think that you can judge a persons guilt (or otherwise) and recommend a sentence, without having any sort of a legal background, and from reading only a few lines about it in a newspaper, then perhaps they should be petitioning the government with their amazingly well thought out replacement for the current legal system. It would certainly save a lot of money!
Or the silver-sprayed coathangers spinning around inside empty monitor casings like last time (cos they couldnt afford to employ a programmer who knew how to do 3d properly)?

Oh, the irony.
If you really wanted to be helpful you`d hide a link somewhere in your post ;)
It`d still scramble the firmware in your cdrom drive!

Couldnt we add a low-level encryption system in here somewhere? Would Rubberhose benefit from this idea?

I mean, they arent being serious, right?
"And there are people out there willing to pay the $600 for the video cards, otherwise companies like nVidia wouldn't be making them "
Does that go for the DreamCast too? (I know it was cheaper than $600 but the principle remains)

"If I decide to knock over a bank, whether I did it to feed my kids or support a drug habit wouldn't make it any more or less illegal."
No, but in my eyes it`d certainly make it less immoral if it were robbing a bank or your kids starving. If you`re a drug addict you`re just a loser!

I read the article, but cant see what the laws are that he`s complaining about.
A mate of mine has a sign in his office:
I enjoy sex as much as you enjoy smoking but i dont fuck on your desk so please dont smoke in my office.
I think that about sums it up.
