if you`d said listening to beatles on a cd, i`d have laughed...but mp3`s sound pretty rough to me...perfect for playing a mono pressing of, say, `Help!`....
ideal for that `hey, the bass sounds like it was recorded underwater! cool!` sound...
Just tried that....never usually log out so i had to get my password mailed to me! doh!
still doesnt work! if this bugs me too much i`ll have to mail someone at slashdot about it...just wondered if it were me... this started happening last week when i got moderator status for a little bit... it suggests surfing at -1...didnt think it permanantly forced you to though!
...its set as `0` in my `customise comments` box, but i still get -1`s up unless i change and save prefs on each discussion, each time.... why? anyone know - please help!
specifically the Amiga demo/cracked game scene of the late `80s and early-mid 90`s...
I *never* heard of `cracker` being used to describe the type of person i described previously as a `hacker`... never ever ever! Though i probably heard someone call a cracker a hacker (again, my previous definitions)... like you`d `hack` through the code to `crack` the program.
I put `scene` there to differentiate between those `in the know` and...uh..`users` and people who arent interested in all this. I`m not sure i`ve ever heard any of them refer to `cracking` - its hacking all the way...
writing a virus (which works) is hardly difficult is it - the hard bit is writing one which gets past most virus checkers so it spreads successfully. getting someone to run it for you seems to be the only way - if you have the user on your side, then thats the hard part done!
I agree with an earlier poster - this is data darwinism. its a pity it wasnt more destructive, rather than just deleting a few jpgs/mp3s...
if the person who wrote this spent their time helping old ladies across the road/workign on open source, they`d probably only get like 2 people to the other side / tidy up & comment 2 or 3 functions...
i dont have any sympathy for the person who wrote it , however (if they get caught). it messed my companies systems around for a little while... the only good thing about this is another slagging for Microsofts ridiculous approach to security.
Cracker = someone who removes copy protection from games..
Hacker = someone who enters other peoples computers via a modem (not necessarily damaging the system, but doing it in an un-authorised manner...)
only occasionally is a hacker someone who `really likes coding`...
and these definitions seem to be pretty prevalent outside the scene too... though i dont claim that there are no uk based dissenters from these definitions (i`d be interested to hear either way, actually).
You could use a one time pad... simply post/pgp/hand deliver (this is the best option) a book, or a large file of random (whatever) characters...
then when you want to email someone something secret, just xor each char of your plaintext with each char of the file you gave them, and voila... an effectively random stream, that even brute force would have trouble with...for instance if you made sure the first 99% of your message was junk in the first place, so even a successful decrypt looked like rubbish.
Was this (the punishment, only in the radio series i think, where really naughty people were taken to this planet and shown how insignificant they are) anything to do with experiences with hallucinogenic plants (or related)?
...spare a thought for those of us in the u.k. who (sometimes) buy a cd for around 17 pounds (probably about 30 dollars).
Cant think why mp3 sites are so popular...
same time
Hehe...
Fast site. Popular site. Pick one.

Hey..no-one likes a `me too` post :)
had a story on Saturday written by two `experts`, who declared that it was written in a language called `Virtual basic`.
The ignorance of journalists in this field ceased to suprise me years ago...

people always say this!

Funny...though i prefer Morrisseys name for him... `Ponce`.
The best description of Ponce has got to be in some mag i read about 10 years ago where his entry in an encyclopaedia of `musicians` was just :
"possibly a reincarnation of one of Jimi Hendrix`s pubic hairs"
a.
Hes not been the same since he left the Shadows...
"Now, if someone were to create an animated film that was indistinguishable from live-action, then we'd have a sticky situation. "
Uhhh..huh.huhh....huhuh.. he said `sticky`....
:)
Nononononono...
...i just feel our audience is becoming more....selective....
I think this darkness is a Buddhist thing, not a brit thing...`all life is suffering`.. no?
Did you read `the meaning of liff`? Funny!
I didnt think it was depressing...

MacOs....MacOs...
oh hang on, yeah, right! The Os for Macintoshes? I remember them...
"just imagine the exploits that would come if the source was released. "
Actually, its sort of the opposite of that.
Think about it, just for, say, 10 seconds. (clue: count the number of viruses, worms etc that are out for Linux.)
Ok, times up.

Unless you`re in the u.k., where buff is a tedious off-brown colour...
Seeing as we get this story every few weeks!
"the universe is now bigger/smaller than previously thought"
Which is it?!
