  1. ok, here goes.. on French revolt against Prime Meridian-Sort Of · · Score: 5
Since it's French bash day at slashdot today (woohoo), I realize there is no point in even trying to convince you that most French probably think of this as a really dumb idea. Since I'm half French, and all I saw was insults and mockery (well deserved might I add... for the most part anyway), all I can do is comment a bit on the subject.

If I remember my history correctly, there was a great debate as to where the prime meridian was supposed to be at first. It obviously came down to France and England, and it's rather obvious who 'won'. Now, I'm not looking to play the blame game but England and the United States are not ones to speak when it comes to avoiding world-accepted standards (inches vs. meters, driving left vs. driving right, etc). So please, before you insult the whole French population, think of your own country and how it stands out from the others in terms of standards. Also, one of the posts was saying that the French are arrogant, and although I'm not saying they aren't, you can't deny that there is no country more arrogant than the USA. And yes, for the last time, I think this is a dumb idea.

Let the flaming begin! (right KrON?)

  2. They're not just calculators, they're also toys on HP49G is a reality · · Score: 2

I remember having this calculator in high school and using it for anything but math. I especially enjoyed borrowing one of the remote controls from my school (they were all the same brand panasonics i believe) and duplicating the commands to my calculator. Then right in the middle of my teacher's lecture the tv would miraculously power up... Aaah those were the days. Of course my teacher went insane >:)
I also made quite an impression when i showed everyone the image of claudia schiffer that someone had coded. Man that looked really good. It was even cooler when my friend showed off pong (or was it arkanoid? one of those...) on his TI and I proudly showed him Mortal Kombat on my HP. He was nothing short of speechless. I think his reply was, "that's not a calculator, it's a computer!"
I can't believe they yanked IR out of the 49G's, I thought that it was the best part of the HP48gx. Well that, and pretending to use the calculator for simple math while i was actually checking formulas or the periodic table for a hand during tests :)
Other than that the 49G looks really sweet. Looks like I'm gonna have to save up a bit and get me one of those puppies.

In case some of you are wondering where i got all these programs, do a search for "HP48" on any search engine. You'd be surprised how many hits show up. Although at the time I got most of mine at hpcvbbs.corvallis.hp.com (It was something of that sort, I don't remember though and that doesn't seem to be right).

  3. uhm, no? on Catching a breath... · · Score: 1
I've seen both sides. I was really short in 7-8-9th grade before i picked up 4 inches in the summer from 9th-10th. Ironically enough, after that growth spurt, I was picked on a lot less (basically i went from 5'5 to 5'9 and by the end of the year I was 5'10) and after transferring schools I was not picked on at all. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I did not feel aleniated. lonely perhaps, but that was my own fault (and I'd rather not get into that =). I felt like I really belonged in my new high school, I was friends with a majority of students. What I hated most about high school, it has there is a "You're either part of THEIR group or MY group" attitude that goes unspoken and some make sure you don't feel welcomed. But I always had friends in all the "groups" because there are nice kids in EVERY group. It's too bad people don't realize that the majority of the time, it's the geeks who are the nicest.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that it's BS if you think it should be part of growing up. NO KID should have to be picked on, in no way does it make you stronger inside and anyone who disagrees never had it really bad. It's not just because kids feel outcast that they act cruel, there are probably a lot more reasons varying from bully to bully. Some have violent parents or have been molested in the past, others might have a short temper and are unable to control their emotions. Then there are the kids who act like they're playing along so they don't suffer the same treatment, even though they don't feel right about it.
