  2. Re:The current state of things on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1

I merely mentioned what camera I was attracted to, I was careful not to recommend it to everyone. I know it isn't going to please all consumers, as the amount of control you have on that camera is rather limited. The quality of the pictures I have seen taken by others have been, to my eye, very appealing and its small size makes it very convenient. The features, albeit limited, are more than sufficient for a consumer like me - i.e., someone who just likes to take a picture and download it on mr. computer, not arrange aperture size, depth of field, interpolation, white balance and whatever other buzzword you can think up. For someone who is an amateur of photography, this camera is quite simply not going to do unless used with a regular camera, something a lot of amateur and even semi-professional photographs seem to do.

What OS'es I use is probably of relevance. I use both Windows and FreeBSD. I don't believe that there are any drivers for Linux or BSD, there might be drivers for the Macintosh. However, I am certain that there is a COMPACTFLASH READER that can be used in Linux and BSD. Those are rarely expensive ($130 at most it seems, usually around $79-99) and are probably very convenient. I must admit I have yet to do research on the matter, but it would make more sense to me if someone concentrated on making drivers for a compactflash/smartmedia reader rather than going after every single digicam out there.

Also, I never said that you can get a digital camera that will do EVERYTHING that you can do with a 35mm. I just happen to believe that for the average slashdot reader that doesn't know much about photography, they're most likely to be more convenient as we have frequent access to computers, power sources to recharge the batteries and (sometimes) enough money to buy goodies such as a microdrive for neverending picture-taking! The s10 and s20 both support the Microdrive, although it uses up more power than a regular compactflash card - meaning batteries will run out on you sooner (but you should still get good productivity out of it if you manage your picture-taking well).

I know digital cameras are still expensive and don't offer quite as much as regular cameras (after all, they haven't been on the market as long - early 90's perhaps?), however they are gradually getting there and I'm guessing that in five to six years digital cameras will be as commonplace as CD players. Prices should go down, high-quality, feature-filled cameras should pop up from Nikon, Canon, Olympus and other manufacturers, and since everyone seems to have a computer (or more) these days, they should sell relatively well. Just my opinion though.

In conclusion, I wasn't recommending the Powershot S10 or S20 (even though I believe them to be excellent cameras). I was strongly encouraging that anyone interested in buying a digital camera should read the different reviews on the sites I linked, and decide what unit would work best for their uses.

  3. Websites on the matter... on Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend? · · Score: 1

There are quite a few good websites analyzing and comparing various digital cameras. I wouldn't say one camera is hands-down the winner (although it would seem the great majority of digicam owners have a Nikon Coolpix 900, 950 and soon 990) but one should look at what he or she wants in a digital camera and choose the one that best fits their needs.

I personally find the Canon Powershot series to be quite attractive, and plan on buying one of the two models (s10 or s20) before the end of this year. People interested in controlling the camera's aperture size and the like won't enjoy this camera, however I like its simplicity and image quality. I'll just be taking pictures of my computer and LAN parties anyway (hehe).

Some people say that digital cameras can't replace film cameras. That is true, however for the average user it is truly more convenient, albeit more expensive at first but not necessarily in the longrun (remember, you never have to buy film and rechargeable NiMH batteries last a long time).

The sites you can check are:
Digital Photography Review (maintained by Phil Askey), and Steve's Digicams (maintained by Steve Sanders).

  4. You're confusing IRC Operators and channel ops. on IRCnet Servers Strike To Protest DDoS Attacks · · Score: 1

No IRCop in his right mind would K-Line you or /kill you for using 'darn.' Heck (pardon my French), most I know would /kill you for being too damn polite (no, not really, unless you actually knew them and they were teasing... vanity kills!).

Channel operators have the RIGHT to make up their own rules, it's what makes IRC so darn (oh my, here I go again, pardon me!) popular. If you visit #bible, you should expect God's wrath (ie, a kick + ban) for using 'questionable' language. Get on one of the major networks (Efnet, Dalnet, Undernet, IRCnet... oops cross off that last one) and trust me, most channels won't ban you for swearing. I'm sure a significant percentage of them has a swear word as part of the channel name. My personal favorite is #why.the.fuck.are.you.whoising.me when performing the /whois command on an alias.

In any event, your average IRC Operator will not only be disinterested in performing a /kill or k-line on something as ridiculous as usage of the word "darn" because that would increase the amount of kills by 5000000% making Mr. or Mrs. IRCop a busy, busy person, but if he/she knows what's good for him/her, will avoid performing such radical commands over such ridiculous matters. I don't think there's a single IRC Operator on a single IRC network that has yet to be DoS'ed, before or after (although most likely after) becoming an operator. They know it's an unpleasant experience. They'll avoid using their authority in questionable terms, and sometimes will avoid involvement altogether, such as getting in between channel takeovers on Efnet for example.

As a side note, for those of you who think Efnet sucks because it doesn't have ChanServ or NickServ, well that's everyone's opinion. I personally can't stand the idea that someone owns a certain alias or a certain channel. If you aren't appealed by the idea, you should get on another network such as Dalnet. For those of you who don't know what ChanServ is, it's a service that keeps ownership of a certain channel for you. You can register a password through a bot allowing you to get operator status. NickServ works the same way, but keeps your alias (your 'nick') for you when you're offline.

Yes, it is true that a K-line will not only make matters worse and anger the g0ds (or whatever their alias might be), but more importantly it won't do a damned thing. Guess what, they can get a new IP/hostname and log right back on. They have a choice between spoofing, hacking newbie boxens, or using one of their many v-hosts from which they either telnet/ssh or have bnc set up. Anyone who's been on IRC has noted the most original (I personally liked FadeTo.blackened.com) to the most ridiculous (bill.gates.is.a.closet.unixnerd.org (how retarded is that?)) v-host in the more popular, non-newbie IRC channels. You must understand that a K-line is like locking a door in an endless hallway of unlocked doors that all open to the same house.

If I was offered to be an IRC operator on Efnet, I would have to turn it down despite my endless hours wasted chatting because I could never handle such a responsibility. I'm quite simply not knowledgeable enough when it comes to networking protocols to handle such a situation. Maybe in a few years... :)

I don't believe he's saying that at all. What I think he's trying to point out is that whining won't get any problems solved. If they have a serious problem with DoS attacks, they should ACT and not talk. I don't consider this an act, I consider it a cowardly, "easy" way out. Administrators have to realize that new exploits and DoS attacks have IRC for a breeding ground, and must decide whether they wish to maintain the server or put it out of comission. KrON isn't trying to point out that they should take the heat (although at times, yes there are new exploits such as stream.c which emerged a couple of weeks ago for which admins had no choice but to accept some downtime until they could get the source code) but rather look for solutions. A "strike" is not going to resolve matters at all. To me, it's like having authorities close a certain street because too much violence occurs there. What is gonna happen? The criminals are gonna look for other streets until this one reopens, and in the meantime the people that have been living peacefully on that street all this time get screwed over. OK, so the analogy isn't that great, but you get the point.

I hate to break it to the IRCNet admins, but there's more than one IRC network. There's more than 100. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if there was over a thousand. They'll find another court to play in, and come back to their neighborhood when the yellow tape comes off. My point is, this won't resolve anything. It could even deteriorate the situation.

    Oh, and for the record:

    On Efnet, /users returns:

If there is one thing I hate, it's stereotypes. This article is FULL of them (and full of it, might I add). Now he might have a good suggestion or two in there, but please PLEASE don't waste your time by hanging on every word he says. This world has an incredible amount of variety, and you should NEVER associate a face (or a body) with a personality. I've met beautiful women who were the sweetest creatures. I've also met the *ugliest* women who had the worst personalities imaginable! I have also met (heaven forbid!) beautiful, sweet geek girls. There is no right or wrong, black or white. Women are like us, they come in all shapes and sizes. They might think differently, but in the end they usually want someone they can relate to.

I'd like to comment on Roblimo's high school 'friend,' Jessica. She's a freak of nature. She was ugly, a tad arrogant but she matured and became beautiful. Would she have matured if guys had been all over her? Probably not. If others like you, there is no reason for change. She probably realized that she wasn't projecting the image she wanted, and decided to change. Apparently, she was very successful. But why look back and say, "Well gee, I should've been nice to her?" That's hypocrisy! You shouldn't be nice to a girl in the hopes that she'll become a goddess, those are simply the wrong reasons. If you really don't like a girl, then in my opinion you won't ever respect her. If she changes for the better, and matures greatly, then good for her, but leave it at that. If you're really open-minded, talk to her, try to see if she's really changed that much. For the record, this is true for anyone, not just used-to-be-ugly-and-annoying women. If you think the girl isn't particularly pretty but she's got a nice personality, then you should talk to her. If she likes you but you're not interested, tell her so (try to be gentle about it). This is incredibly harder than it sounds, I for one am really bad at letting down women. Does that make my comment obsolete? Not at all! It's not because I'm not good at something that I don't know how it's supposed to be done. I get better every time, practice helps (I don't have much of it, however).

Now, I know it's been said over and over, everywhere and by everyone... Be yourself. There is no secret. Some of us are born with the ability to attract women, others aren't so lucky (at least 75% of men). And for the rest of us, there is no point in pretending to be someone we're not. Don't follow someone else's footseps, you're cheating yourself. Listen to advice, but try to make up your own mind... Not everyone is right, it is a harsh truth that I learned the hard way. If a girl doesn't respect you for who you are, no matter how beautiful she is, don't waste your time on her. Find someone who can appreciate you as much as you appreciate her.

While we're at it, here's a bit of advice from someone who regrets this every day he wakes up: NEVER hesitate to ask. It doesn't matter how pretty she is, it doesn't matter how "out of your league" you think she is. If she shows some form of interest (really friendly, maybe a hug sometimes, smiles at you) and you like her, ask her. It might be devastating to be rejected, but you'll get over it. You can NEVER (believe me) get over doing nothing at all. Look at Ben Stiller in "There's Something About Mary"... the guy is 30 and he can't get over it. Of course, no one wants to hear about his sob story so I won't tell mine either :p

Now, I don't know much about genetics because I hate biology; however I don't see why we shouldn't do this. Let's see our arguments here:
    • "It doesn't feel right" - neither does going to the dentist. Cloning an extinct species will be done, whether now by these scientists or a bit later on by another team of scientists. It's unavoidable, any genetic expert dreams of cloning such a species. The truth is, even though they're probably doing this to get some attention, that's not all they're doing it for. Such an experiment will bring a fortune of medical and biological information which we need to improve medicine and to understand how nature works a little better.
    • "We shouldn't play God" - I'm sorry, I can't take on that one; I am atheist. I don't want to offend anyone. But you must understand that for me this isn't an issue.
    • "They were extinct for a reason" - Yes, but we don't know what it is (do we?)- and in my opinion, not on purpose. So why don't we find out? IF we are successful in cloning a mammoth, we move on to step two- wait to see if they survive, and for how long. I SERIOUSLY doubt all hell is gonna break loose because we "defied" nature. Isn't that what we've been doing since Lucy?
    • "There are better things to clone" - Can't argue with that one. But it's not like it's the worst thing to clone. It's an extinct species, it should provide some interesting results.

I say just let the scientists do their jobs. I personally find it a little sicker to clone a human being. Besides what's the worst that can happen, they get foreign architects to build the cage in centimeters and provide the information in inches?
