Can we ban together and just refuse to comment on duplicate articles? I was hoping that the NY Times ran two similar articles in two days. Why hope.....
Slashdot is like a drug. I complain and want to quit, but I keep coming back. (I'm sure you more creative types out there can come up with a better analogy)
Technically since Google doesn't publish any earnings estimates, they didn't miss anything. It was the analysts estimates that they missed. Whether those estimates were justified or not is to be debated.
To throw my $0.02 into the pot, we have a very tough time finding qualified programmers right now. A lot of that is Human Resource related (they do all the interviewing) and once someone is in, we cannot get rid of them without just cause. Apparently not qualified doesn't cut it.
We even have a number of entry level positions opened, all we need is a bright person who is willing to learn. Where did all the talent go? Are people just lazy now? (I graduated in 2000 so I'm not that old, yet)
I move to PA 5 years ago. I have always filed my PA state taxes online, and it only takes 10 minutes. It takes longer to log in than it does to fill in your information.
The software does the rest. I of course always double check the numbers, but have never found a problem.
I even got my wife to do our state taxes one year, it's that simple.
I have no idea how many people take advantage of the service. I'm guessing a smaller percent of the population than I expect.
My Grandfather flew last week without photo ID. He had no problem getting through security (Manchester, NH to Philly). He does have a drivers license, but once you are over 70, the State of Maine does not require you to have a photo id on it.
Does that make you feel safer? Meanwhile, the last time my wife flew, she used her BJ's card to identify herself b/c her license still had her maddien name on it. No one had a problem with that.
If everyone didn't have automatic transmissions, this problem wouldn't have been an issue. Just push in the clutch and let the engine spin all it wants. There is no drivetrain connected to it anymore.
Seriously, something smells fishy in the story. I found it hard to believe that the "off" button suddenly broke.
Haven't we all seen this before? I remember back in 2002 when OQO claimed they would ship something very similar (an "Ultra Personal Computer" or uPC) by the end of 02. Haha. What a laugh. Here we are 1 1/2 years later and nothing yet.
I think we are missing the bigger picture. Why was a law passed that requires cell phone companies to let you keep a phone number, but if you move your residence (even if it's less than 5 miles) you will end up getting a different phone number? The law should apply to all types of phone service, not just one kind.
This law does not benefit me b/c I do not own a cell phone. But I did move about 4 miles 2 years ago and had to get a new phone number.
Sure there is cost associated with both systems, and I'm wondering what kind of fees will be associated with keeping the same number while switching plans. Buyer Beware.
Ditto! I love taxact. I paid $9.99 for federal and I didn't worry about state (Here in PA you can do your state income taxes free online, a nice service provided by our friendly state government)
I often wonder how many residnent in PA go out an purchase state filing software. I'm sure H&R Block and others push it onto customers.
You said it yourself, if there is more than one competitor, who cares if they give their product away. Linux, Windows, Sun OS all run on x86 architecture. Aren't they all competitors? With a little luck, we could be running MacOS in the future also. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed)
Being a Monopoly is not illegal according to U.S. law. Abusing Monopoly power is illegal. Whether this law is warranted or not, that's another arguement all together. I think I'm mixing arguements here so I'll try and keep them seperated.
Over the long term, if Microsoft gave their products away for 2 year, then jacked up the price to astronomical levels, people and business greatly benefited from the free give away. No one is forcing them to purcahse at the new higher prices. If prices get too high then other businesses will enter the market. Prices drop, consumers start upgrading again.
In that case it would be illegal for Linux to give it's product away because by doing that you are keeping competitors from entering the market.
If microsoft wanted to GIVE it's OS away, why can't it? As consumers, we would make a choice, what is better, Free MS OS or Free Linux Distro? What is GM wanted to give away free cars? Would you take one?
I feel the Slashdot community once again is just "anti-microsoft" and not thinking with their heads.
The concept of preditory pricing needs to go away. If just doesn't make any sense. If the price is too high, new competitors will enter the market forcing the price down. If the price is too low, they will go out of business. Either way the consumer wins. I remember many a.com giving stuff away. Look how long they lasted.
You didn't have to post as Anonymous Coward. I screwed up and read the wrong column. I won't flame you for my carelessness.
Yes, they do have cash of $4.4B. But they already have $2.2B in debt. They only have $5.6B in revenue.
WorldCom did buy MCI, and where is WCOM today? Around $0.13. A better example would be Comcast purchasing AT&T Broadband. At least they are still around. Too much debt though.
Apple doesn't have $6B in cash. Apple doesn't have $6B market cap. Market cap as of today is $4.7B. Cash is $1.16B.
So what is wrong here? Someone above posted an article that said Apple had "$4.4 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments as of Dec. 28" But that sounds like Market cap to me. Check their
cash flow statement. Also, you'd never get a loan larger than your market cap, unless you have some big favors to call in.
And you forgot to mention that the first accident was preventable. An engineering coverup.
If you're a dreamer than I am too.
While I'm writting, I'm going to rant. I'm sick of all the ignorant fools who say "why didn't they do a space walk" or "why didn't they just travel to the space station".
Phew. Why doesn't change the fact that 7 people died while trying to benefit humanity. May their souls rest in peace, may their dreams live on in others.
THANK YOU! Someone else here has some understandings on how free trade works. Yes, the president stands up there, claims he is for "free trade" then the next day signs a $180B farm subsidy, or a few months later imposes a 30% tarrif on foreign steal. All in an effort to get votes come November. You can't beat buying votes with American tax dollars. The government takes your $$$, then gives it back to you and say "look what I did! Vote for me!"
The EU is just as bad as the US. So much for free trade. NAFTA the only true free trade agreement that coveres all goods and labor. Of course we undermine it with subsidies, but it is a step in the right direction.
I've only been in the workforce for 3 years, but both my wife and I max ours out. Its a small sacrifice now, but when we're both 45 with over $1M in our 401K, we'll both be very happy. Maybe we'll help bail out some of these spenders.
On second thought, probably not. Most of them have consolidated their loans with a home equity loan then proceeded to run up the credit cards again.
What can we say? You can print whatever you want in this era, and somehow, we get all worked up about it.
Before I rant, does anyone know what we officially call people who were born after 1975? I don't know an official name. I don't know if there is one. Just curious.
The savings rate has been falling for years, and its not just Gen X who's doing it. So much credit has been lent out we actually have negitive savings (there really is no such thing, the point is we spend more than we make)
No one forces people to take out huge student loans. There are less expensive state universities all across the country. That's the great thing about America, you can go to school anywhere. And the credit card debt is 100% the fault of the borrower, no one forced you to take on credit card debt, or charge consumable items. Why would you want to pay interest on things like food and gas? Items which have been consumed before you start to pay on them?
Things are not as bad as it sounds. No, things are great, but then when were they great? Pensions are a thing of the past, most companies are getting rid of them b/c they are a liability on Wall Street. (companies spend them anyway, much like the U.S. gov spends the Social Security surplus every year)
There is also no reason or evidence to believe that salaries will not rise in the next 20 years. Now, if the generation continues to spend more than they earn then rising salary is neligible.
I'm really interested in what we call people born after 1975. Anyone know?
This is going to sound stupid, but I never made the connection between the SD card on the Zarius and the SD DRM card we have been griping about for months. I thought it was the same acronym, but 2 total different cards.
Can someone tell me or point me towards something that explains what an SD port is? I know PCMCIA, CF, microdrive, SM (are there PDA's that take SM?) but I've never heard of SD. Is it a Sony Datastick? (a guess, I thought i was a Memorystick, but I could be wrong) That proprietary stupid memory module that was a big reason why I didn't even consider purchasing a digital camera from them.
Thank you!! I thought I was the only one who noticed that this article WAS POSTED IN APRIL!
You know, I understand that someone may not read ALL the slashdot articles, or even remember them all. But a little search for the letters OQO would have returned... I take that back, Slashdot does not index words under 4 letters in their searches. I just checked. But you found it quickly enough.
Okay, so we will forgive CmdrTaco today. But I am disgusted at the number of repeat stories getting posted every month.
Of course, I was born in 1978, not 1976, so maybe I stole his.
Happy birthday CmdrTaco. Enjoy the presents.

Actually, burning coal emits Radon gas.
