    Some people are trying so hard to get a steal, they don't look at the details till after. I especially like the guys selling cheap speakers out of a rental truck, telling you they are stolen, when in reality they are just charging 4 times retail for crappy speakers in cheap plywood boxes.

    Your not a programmer are you? Knuth was not writing space invaders as a kid, he wrote the bible instead. Knuth is one of the wizards of academic programming. The article is by some guy who quotes Knuth a little to try and justify his rant.

    It can be argued that the primary goal of going to university is to learn, in which case cheating is only hurting your self. But in the real world, most people that graduate start using their little piece of paper to justify a higher wage than someone else. At which point the cheater is also hurting there future employer and the person they beat out for the job.

    The ATM is at McMurdo Station, not the south pole. McMurdo Station is actually quite a large village during the summer with about 1000 residents. They have real businesses just like anywhere else. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMurdo_Station

    Telnet and Rsh are effectively dead. FTP is used primarily on cheap hosting and drop boxes. HTTP is encrypted where it is taken to count - Banking and such. POP IMAP are being encrypted by more and more Large ISP's. Some issues that are solable by encryption are solved otherways (routing and firewalls) Everything can be encrypted but most does not need to be.

    the US is what, one country, the rest of the world is what 200 some odd more countries. One of the funny things about patents is you can patent in your own country and hope that the other countries honor your patent laws, patent in every country, or just patent in the US, as all most all countries honor their patent laws. As more companies are interested in doing business outside their own country the need to patent in the US increases. I'm not sure that means the US is faltering in anyway.

    I once started work at a company that generated login credentials completely randomly for 100's of thousands of users. I lost every verbal argument with management about the need for a rewrite until I ran a simple SQL query and found three pairs of users sharing the same identity. (I just rewrote the rand routine to loop until unique and gave them the projected failure date, sometime well in the future)

    I think the conversation has devolved into a language issue: a. what is the chance of two events happening. b. after some trigger, what is the chance of one event happening. 33.3%, 50%. can I go to bed now?

    Yes, there is tons of free "atmospheric" music available with copy left licenses. Google "creative commons music". For example look at: www.jamendo.com. There are also some rather large collections of European trance/ambient music around. The quality is there, but in a diamonds in the rough kind of way, you may have to search a bit. Or are you asking for a site where someone has prequalified the music for you, if so well, I haven't found it yet. None the less there are some great collections out there, and if you rank by popularity some of the cream will rise. If you are looking for one of the titles in particular, try Google?

    NO, no it does not. Given that he tried other options, and he seems to have remained calm for at least the first few KM of the problem, he probably did. from comments in the article and below, it does seem that at least some modern automatics are completely fly by wire affairs.
