    This is very bad news for owners of computers

    Hehe...but not if you own some Rambus stock :)

    Anyways, this might lead to lots of other pending lawsuits and cases against Rambus getting settled. The district court judge is taking a lot of flack now for how this case was handled - jury persuassion, etc. Expect to hear more about this in the coming days.

    Am I the only one who thinks this looks a little suspicious? First of all, the perspective on the "photos" is different. For example, the three white buttons on the bottom of the screen are various sizes among the three photos. Secondly, there is a distinct drop shadow on the left hand side of the screen on the first one. Not to mention the cheesy depth of field blur.

    How about the red glow on the "metal" around the screen, even where there is no red? Also, the device looks like it has some underlighting in the first photo, and taking the other lighting angles into account this would have to be floating.

    Now let's move on to the obviously pasted in UI screens. Overlay some POV lines, and they clearly don't even fit into the angles of the device. I think the third one is the most blatant. Look on the right side of the screen. On the bottom of the device, the screen goes all the way to the edge, but closer to the top there is a noticeable gap.

    Now, the device is supposed to have a 220 pixel tall screen. The SMS text on the last one is about 1/3 of the total height. So, 6 lines of text (plus padding) leaves you roughly 7-8 pixels for each character. That doesn't look like a 7-8 pixel font.

    Not bad for 3DS Max. Isn't Wired still taking submissions for 2002 vaporware?

    A bank (Nation's Bank I think) called my cell phone one time. They claimed they "must have been given a wrong number" but the lady knew my name, so I wasn't buying it. I have no accounts with them, nor have I ever given out my cell to any companies. So I asked to speak with her manager. I happily told them that it was illegal to solicit to cell phones. They tried to feed me some more BS, so I asked for her manager. I finally got to someone decently high up, and they must have just been too busy to care, because they just said "send us a bill."

    So, I itemized the lost minutes, as well as about an hour's worth of lost wages (this was during work) and sent it off. Sure enough, about two weeks later I got a check in the mail.

    Needless to say, I didn't cash it...it makes a good story. Plus, my coworkers thought I was crazy when I was on the phone.

    This isn't just limited to music CDs. I used to work for a company that did a lot of multimedia CDs for some very large clients, and this had to be the top requested feature. Everything from mom and pops to Fortune 100s wanted to see who was using their CDs and when. It's usually just done with an HTTP request (or multiple requests) and a little bit of XML data or something similar.

    I would say this was on at least 50% of the CDs we produced.

    I think reviews on any website are generally biased. The large majority of users who purchase an item don't have the comparable products to rate it against. Especially for more expensive items, like digital cameras for instance. Of course if you've only had one digital camera ever, the one you have is going to be the best you've ever used (even if you hate it).

    Your knowledge on any given product is directly related to the amount of experience you have with all of it's competitive products. Many people just rate something 5 stars because relatively speaking, it is the best they've ever used due to a simple lack of exposure. Through the use of that one product, of course you'll become accustomed to at feel most at home with it's features or content and rate it accordingly.

    I think truly useful reviews are those either from users which can truly lay out the positives and negatives of the product in question, or those that offer a direct comparison to a similar product in an unbiased form. It's like someone who goes from a moped to a Kia...that's a huge jump. He gives the Kia 5 stars. Then you get the guy who normally drives a Ferrari who simply cringes at the thought of a Kia and gives it 0 stars. Reviews are highly relative.

    Oh, thank god. For a minute there I was worried I wasn't going to be able to easily upgrade my old SGI Origin 3000. I guess "simple upgrades" is relative.

    For every nerd that thinks this is really cool (myself included) - there's a symphony weenie that just shit his pants in disbelief.

    Speaking of the symphony...got a quick little story. I was at the symphony a few months ago in the best seats (other than Loge Boxes). Now I'm not an old guy - in my 20's - so I kind of snicker when I see these two older couples obviously snooping around, and sneaking into the seats next to my date and I. At intermission an usher comes over and kindly asks to see their tickets. It was hilarious seeing these 65+ year old couples, who were obviously loaded, get kicked out of the symphony like they were at some sporting event. Nothing left to do but hang your head in shame and drive home in your $100,000 Mercedes, I guess.

    In response to the comment about the "economy picking up" in this article and people bitching that it's not - well - stop bitching. While not 100% true, I am generally a more happy person knowing how many unskilled workers were filtered out of the working public.

    I have spent time interviewing people coming from everything from startup .coms to Fortune 500s. It boggles my mind that there are so many unskilled workers out there in the industry. With the amount of money that had to have been spent on unqualified labor, it's no wonder the economy is in such a bad condition.

    I now do consulting/retainer work for several companies, including a large Fortune 100. There are literally HUNDREDS of people in the IT department with no discernable skills. It would be so much easier and more cost effective to replace ten of them with one qualified employee.

    That said, my only resume advice is this - keep it short and highlight what your future boss would see as your highest acheivements. They will be in the mindset of looking for items that will ultimately be able to benefit their image to their superiors. Also, some items to show you have a life outside of IT wouldn't hurt either.

    I got a TiVo for my DirecTV system about a month ago. I picked up my Hughes unit for $100. New subscribers can get one for $29.95 (yes, $29.95) online here http://www.expertsatellite.com/tivotvyourway.html. So no, they're not expensive.

    Once you get dual tuners setup, you can watch a recorded program, and be recording two others. I know that's a lot of TV, but it really kicks ass. Setting it up to record all your favorite shows is a breeze, and if you give shows you like a "thumbs up" it'll actually record other stuff it thinks you might like. Pretty damn cool.

    Also, I don't think that the networks should complain too much about commercials. If anything, they should focus on providing better commercial content. Often times, I'll rewind to watch a commercial again or catch a phone number or website I missed. How else can you replay commercials like "I Love Alpacas" over and over again?

    What an excellent choice of quotes, considering the fact that JP shut down a public IRC server just less than a week ago. He totally contradicts everything that he says. He talks about free speech this and free speech that, and yet when someone says anything remotely demoting of him he runs off like some small child crying for their mother.

    I wouldn't be surprised if sometime soon he accidentaly ends up suing himself. I don't know why he thinks that he can just go around shutting down servers like he does. He has some sort of power problem and thinks that he is in control of everything. Well, he's not. He will cause the himself and his little company that he likes to call AntiOnline to crumble in the very near future. The best thing that we can do is just sit back, watch, and enjoy. He is digging his own grave here, and is too ignorant to see it. Sooner or later he's bound to fall in.

    Plus, I don't think that genocide has the bandwidth to accomodate it anymore. It's only on a T1 I believe, and I think that PS was getting up to 8 GB of transfer a day.

    After having worked with JP almost a year now on HappyHacker, I am finding it harder and harder to believe what he has said. I've been involved in incidents with him and then he turns around and says something totally against the truth. In my book, he no longer has any credibilty.

    This is not the first incident of JP shutting down something because of material on it relating to him. JP also recently (within the last week) shut down the HappyHacker IRC server which I helped maintain. This was a public server that he had no authority over, which he shut down due to people making fun of him and questioning his journalistic tactics in a public chat room.
