Rhythmbox also works with iPods with ease and comes installed by default on Ubuntu and in fact will pop-up and sort your iPod out if you plug it into your Ubuntu system. So you don't even have to go looking for it.
And most sensible people are replacing them with a real Linux distro.
I have a full Ubuntu (intrepid Ibex) install on my EEE and it works better than the default Xandros OS even with some of the eye candy on.
The problem with the Xandros OS (seemingly more so on the 901, which I have) is that it's shit. It's nearly impossible to install anything and running the updates it asked me to install would degrade performance.
It's an OS for complete newbs that don't want to install anything. Everyone else will need a better Linux OS.
MS makes them feel like they're top shit with their point and click visual programming suite of software so who can blame them for not properly understanding things if they actually have to type out a bit of code?
I smell bollocks so I've decided to log into my Ubuntu machine and try some of these
These fail:
cd etc/X11/
works
cd etc/X11
works
cd/etc/X11/
works
cd/etc/X11
works
cd etc
cd/X11
Of course this fails. X11 isn't a root folder and you can't do that on any machine. Windows included and that's good. The only other option would be then to expect everyone to../ their way back to the root folder or have this little basic command scan your whole HD everytime because the user is too dim to be in the command line.
cd etc
cd X11
works
This doesn't:
cd/etc
cd X11
works
Would it hurt to be a little intuitive about where I wanted to go? Apparently so...
I think a lot of your examples are shit ways of doing it but they work. But that's Ubuntu for you. It brings Linux to the spackers of the world.;)
As far as the rest of your post it's BS too but I don't have time to waste on my Sunday. Regarding cocking up your commands in the command line, keep in mind you can hit the up arrow to scroll through your typed commands just as it does in Windows CLI. Only a simpleton would retype everything again.
The CLI interfaces of all systems pretty much work the same thanks to established ways of doing things. Everyone that grew up having to use CLI will know what to do. Those that don't shouldn't touch it before reading up on how to use it just like anything else.
I think you're right in thinking C++ or Java. I don't think you could go wrong with either of those. But if you think you may go down the game development route then naturally go with C++.
I don't think most people are that stupid. They know full they're not getting brand new fashion accessories at a 3rd of the cost or less and it's not a fake.
I've yet to meet someone who didn't think they were fakes. They're happy as long as they don't look like fakes.
Regarding counterfeit fashion gear, the problem is more the fact no one cares. They know it's counterfeit and just care about what people see them wearing.
Like someone is actually going to believe that a person driving some old little hatchback car with a job at Tesco actually bought a real Fendi bag.
My complaint is how hard it is to buy real video games thanks to all the junk from Hong Kong.
Maybe it's improved but if ever I go back to buy a game from ebay I will flat out refuse to buy from anyone that looks like their image came from a google search.
I think it's more that 80% of normal PC users or the people (mainly kids no doubt) illegaly downloading PS actually would only need GIMP as they aren't creating professional quality flyers, catalogues or anything else for print media.
I'm not sure who has problems with using SSH (unless they're using some cheap service) because I have BT which isn't the greatest but the modem has built in dynamic dns support and built-in presets for various servers. So my Ubuntu machine is set up so I can ssh, remove desktop or acess my tomcat server from anywhere.
How is it MS needs to lay-off employees but can throw 36.5 million on this?
The state should not give tax payer money to a monopolistic company damaging the local economy by laying off people when clearly they didn't financially need to.
You're right not everyone does fit into cookie-cutter shapes and they don't always fit into what we think they should fit into so trying to force something to happen (like generate more female programmers) is likely a waste of time.
Pretty much everything that should be done for equality has been done. If it happens most women don't want to do certain things then that is the way things have gone and there is no point in trying to change that.
If you want a decent family life for your kid then yes there is a time limit. If you don't care about being old and worthless to your child and him being made fun of because his daddy wears diapers then no, there is no limit.
That's not true. People just don't want to admit that humans are still animals with the logical urge to keep on creating humans and in order to create humans properly at least one human has to stay home and take care of it.
Due to nature giving the woman all the birth and child caring bits naturally for centuries the woman stayed home. It's something built into humans and to think you can change centuries of instinct with a few bra burnings is silly.
Women who rather be career driven just have a chip on their shoulder because most women still rather do things the old way. It's time they realise this and quit thinking that women will dominate these areas and make the labs pink.
You don't need to put put it in the CSS. You include extra CSS with the conditional comment within the html.
No it's not ideal to have to use proprietary conditional comments. I never said it was. However if a company is going to include proprietary functionality then including something that allows you to separate it out is a good thing and by using them all you have to do to remove the bad code is a regex find & replace to remove the conditional statements.
Making money off of a free service by vastly increasing the cost of running the free service without offering compensation especially when the economy is going to shit.
Actually Microsoft did include functionality to allow people to build a site that would have made it dead easy to cut out the proprietary crap, the hacks, etc. in the form of IE conditional tags.
Had developers and designers made good use of these then it should be relatively easy to convert the bulk of the crap.
They could have done more to promote these but then again you shouldn't call yourself a professional and include CSS hacks for IE6 in your main stylesheets.
So what are some examples of Java applets that you have problems with?
Without a doubt there were a lot of shitty Java applets out in the past. After all it was the first way for a lot of people to build multi-media websites and as such it suffered by it's easy entry point and the fact people didn't have any previous examples of what they should doing with multi-media on their website.
However I would say most applets aren't a problem. Most of my wait time on Java based gaming is the downloading of content, just like Flash games.
Lastly, if Java was that shit I doubt one of the the world's largest MMORPGs (Runescape) would use it. More so when the applet has to perform along side flash adverts for non-paying customers.
People who pay for Linux get support. Since these people are clueless then certainly won't be grabbing Fedora off of a torrent. They'll almost certainly be buying a Dell or something similar and of course they support it.
The Ubuntu forums are exceptional for online help too and often easier to comprehend compared to MS's online support because it's written by average people and not some fat lazy slob in MS' support department.
Yeah they don't want their computer eating up their time or getting in the way. That's why the navigate through the menus so damn slowly and peck type things out slower than I could type as a 13 year old in business typing class.
He is quite right. I've seen more than enough people not able to find things on the screen because they simply can't even take the time to read the equivalent of a sentence or two worth of words on the screen.
It's a shame we can't get everyone to agree to start developing innovation and stop pandering to the stupid. Over night you'd see the quality of the net improve ten-fold.
Ubuntu does that. I rarely use the CLI unless I'm connecting to my machine over the internet.
However most people think that not thinking is cool so even the mere fact that things are in different places within the OS' menus is enough to completely boggle their mind. TBH, that's the user being stupid and they should accept that they just possibly might have to learn a new skill to use computers instead of depending on developers treating them like a dim-witted baby.

And? Times have changed. So there's no reason they can't turn around and ask them to pay for all of it if they want it.

I think I would enjoy sex with my grandmother more than watching that again.
I don't want to harm the BBC. I'm just teaching myself stuff.
And let's not forget Python has nice and consistent syntax unlike PHP.
