Sure let them do it but charge significantly more to put Windows on the machine to make it unattractive. That's one thing I do think they should have fought harder on the ground that it damages their image. Of course with all the other shady stuff they were doing it's not terribly surprising they lost.
So basically they milk money from Samsung for using Android but then bribe them into pushing WP7 by giving some of that money back? Would not make sense to at least tell them they don't have to pay the fee if they promote WP7 or is it that MS realises WP7 is going to tank and still wants that Android money.
Unless it turns out to be hugely popular (I find it hard to believe they are since MS is been so quiet) it'll be a mistake. Having an empty MS store across from a busy Apple store just makes Apple look better.
I think Microsoft realises it's not cool and that on PCs it has its position purely because of its legacy support.
What else do they have?
Kin - failure
Zune - Failure
Windows Phone 7 - it's creaking along gaining a tiny bit of market share one month and losing market share another
Kinect - everyone except gamers seem to like them and buy them. At least they're selling them but I'm not sure I'd want to make Kinect games.
Xbox - It's a success in that it's not losing money but is that because it's awesome or because everything is an expensive proprietary add-on and its whole online model is built around milking you for money (ie MS points, subscription based, no web browser and most services requiring a Gold account) and even then it's only really a success in North America. Because of this the Wii has blasted right past it to first place and despite all of Sony's monumental fuck ups and launching 1 year later MS only lead of a few million over Sony. Any little foul up in the next generation could leave them dead last. They could still end up in 3rd place in this generation if it lasts much longer.
Microsoft using legacy support to tie users to their OS worked really well for Windows. Windows will probably always be number 1 for at least another decade. But I think they've really damaged their reputation with Windows. Allowing OEMs to install any sort of crap on top of Windows and allowing them to put it on machines that weren't really up to the job of running it just makes windows look bad. So I think when people don't require some legacy Windows app they go elsewhere.
Some of those people I think are then realising that actually they don't need Windows, love their iphone and then get a Mac so Apple's market share has been creeping up even if there isn't any chance of it over taking MS any time soon. So I think they are a bit scared with times changing and think having a propaganda to push nothing but Windows will some how help.
In a way I think it will only hurt because from everything I've read MS stores seem to be (or were) more expensive for Wintel machines so they'll end up looking like they're ripping off customers.
But what are the game prices like? The complaints I've heard about the PC hardware is that MS isn't competitive on price so if you want a Windows PC then a MS store is probably the last place you want to go.
Because MS doesn't sell PCs they do at least have a lot of hardware from partners but half the problem is it costs more than in most other stores from what I've read so they're not competitive where as if you go to an Apple store it's the same prices as anywhere else admittedly that will mainly be because there are very few options for buying a Mac.
I completely forgot about their stores and didn't realise any opened. I tried looking on the net and there isn't much being said about them. The only thing I found were these.
The gist of them seem to be that Microsoft is copying Apple so they have the same look but unlike the Apple store the MS stores aren't a good value because they don't carry as much stock and can't compete on price with other shops carrying Windows based computers.
That's always going to be a problem for them. They aren't a hardware company (for the most part) so unlike Apple they don't have a ncie small set of hardware that they can offer at the best price available. Apple computers may cost more than Wintel machines but when you go to an Apple store the price of the Mac is the best price you can get for a mac without a student discount.
You go into a Microsoft store and you see PCs that you can get elsewhere for cheaper. Where's the incentive to buy from Microsoft? Imo, their stores will die out quietly or they'll just sell them to someone who can offer a better deal and probably ask to keep the branding.
To be fair (and I probably should have made it more clear) I was talking about the general commentary about Dennis Ritchie. There are a lot of people now who want to be his greatest fan all of the sudden just to stick it to Steve Jobs.
It is disrespectful to both men and, imo, a lot of it belittles Dennis Richie's accomplishments and makes it out like the only reason we should care about his death is to use it against Steve Jobs.
Likewise the people that talk out their back side about Steve Jobs just because he died should shut up.
They're both dead and should be left to rest in peace. Whether people liked either of them or not their families didn't do anything wrong and I'm sure they would rather just get on with their lives rather than seeing their family members used for people's personal agendas.
I agree completely that there were a lot of fake people crying over Steve Jobs but that doesn't mean people should turn around take advantage of Dennis Richie's death to stick it to Steve Jobs. It's disrespectful to both men and I'd argue it's more disrespectful to Dennis Richie.
Two men have died. People should just let them rest in peace and not use either person's death to push an agenda.
Yes he's a charitable person whose scholarship program is racist and who invests in companies that are damaging the nations they claim to help because all they're concerned about, imo, is profit to fix their narrow set of causes.
The foundation invests the assets that it has not yet distributed, with the exclusive goal of maximizing the return on investment. As a result, its investments include companies that have been criticized for worsening poverty in the same developing countries where the Foundation is attempting to relieve poverty.[55] These include companies that pollute heavily and pharmaceutical companies that do not sell into the developing world.[56] In response to press criticism, the foundation announced in 2007 a review of its investments to assess social responsibility.[57] It subsequently cancelled the review and stood by its policy of investing for maximum return, while using voting rights to influence company practices.[58]
The Gates Foundation has poured $218 million into polio and measles immunization and research worldwide, including in the Niger Delta. At the same time that the foundation is funding inoculations to protect health, The Times found, it has invested $423 million in Eni, Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and Total of France — the companies responsible for most of the flares blanketing the delta with pollution, beyond anything permitted in the United States or Europe.
What good is curing Malaria for those people when in order to get there you help turn their environment into a complete mess? Also while Apple did certainly cut back on charity they didn't give it up completely and had with charities like Red.
The (RED) team would like to express condolences to Steve Jobs' family, friends and colleagues today. Mr. Jobs led Apple into its partnership with (RED) in 2006 and that partnership has helped to save the lives of millions of people with HIV in Africa. We are forever grateful for his leadership.
So you think Apple shouldn't get special treatment (though really you can't prove they have) but you think some scumbag blogger should get special treatment and be above the law when it comes to purchasing stolen property?
Gizmodo is part of Gawker Media which is *the* company for tabloid scumbag 'journalism', in my opinion (and many others) so yeah fuck them. Gawker sites have consistently proven to be unprofessional and immature. More companies need to ban them from events until they can act like journalists since that's what they pretend to be.
It's getting really old that people feel the need to constantly bring up Dennis Ritchie only because he died around the same time as Steve Jobs. No one gave a fuck about him and, despite this being a geek site, he was hardly mentioned here. He dies shortly after a world famous person and now everyone acts like they're Dennis Ritchie's personal fucking ambassador.
In fact this submission already has more comments than the one for Dennis when he received an award in Japan earlier.
Go get fucking laid instead of always trying to find something to get angry and bitch about.
Turok the dinosaur hunter got its own street in a city. Anyone can do it if you want to throw some money their way. Apple obviously rakes in a lot of money for California so of course California is going to give him a day.
It installs everything it needs to perform all the functionality you need for your purchases. But if it has taken over your file associations then you probably did something wrong. I never had that problem when I've had to use iTunes.
That's not strictly true. Nintendo makes a profit on their hardware. The only time that wasn't the case is I believe after the price cut on the 3DS. They initially took a loss but I believe I've read they've got around that even.
The idea of selling hardware at a loss is a flawed model. It will be more so as software moves to digital. Keeping in mind retailers make little to nothing on hardware too who would want to sell the next iteration of the xbox of software only came through Live? So think consoles are going to have to change their model and probably become more expensive as a result.
Either way I don't think Apple will get away with selling the hardware at a loss or will even want to consider that so I think they're not going to be as cheap or there will have to be a cut somewhere. My hope at least is they're not that fussed about locking the thing down (assuming it's even a reality). I'm sure they'll want to push people to use itunes and something like the mac app store but so far the mac app store has been better than the iOS app store (I suspect the difference in hardware has to do it that) and you can find much more variety there and there's not nazi-like control over whether your app is GPL'ed or not.

Good luck finding a carrier that will allow you to download nearly 1 gig of data without making you pay through the nose.
It won't have all the features of an Android. They've opted out of adding pain in the ass bugs that linger around for multiple versions and they felt they just couldn't compete with Android seamlessly allows the security to by passed. Maybe we can have that in iOS 6.
Most things for the living room are closed down. Consoles are more closed than any iMac. You can't even surf the net on the 360 just so MS can ensure you don't get anything for free. Apple would have to struggle to be more closed than consoles. I can only see then releasing something more open even if it's not as open as a traditional PC.
If Apple is releasing a competitor to consoles then I can't see how he can complain about it being closed. It certainly can't be any more closed than the xbox which you have to go through Microsoft for everything.
You can't surf the net with a browser because you might find a free game to play on your xbox and Microsoft wants to charge you to access free services like Facebook and Twitter. You can't even buy your own hard drive. You have to buy a proprietary xbox 360 hard drive.
If Apple were to release something half way between a console and a PC then it will probably be more open than the existing consoles. If it comes with a browser it's already more open than the 360.

No it's not. My iPod works just fine on Linux where iTunes isn't available.
Seriously unless the music is DRM free and just plain old quality MP3s then forget it. I'd be too concerned they'll shut it down in a year or two.

It may or may not be ok to take it. If it was there from a bank robbery you just stole evidence.
