If the government is going to make such a tenous argument as piracy funding terrorism they should at least consider other possibilities. An equally, maybe more, justifiable position is that foreign oil funds terrorism.
A coworker and I were talking about this a few weeks ago and used McDonalds as an example. I can remember when I was a kid, small fries came in a bag, small sodas were 8oz. We've traded quantity for quality. It's cheaper for McDonalds to give us more of a bad product then it is to figure out why it sucks and make it better.
Does anyone wonder why we're the fattest country in the world.
Just to put things into perspective, I've compiled a list of the top contributers to Berman and Cobles campaigns.

Although one thing they do have the Linux/KDE doesn't - apps. Specifically, Office and Photoshop. Yes you could say that Linux has equivalents but they aren't really viable alternatives. I tried using Linux only at my company for a year and couldn't do it. I'm back on NT.
Forgetting your opinion of country music, does any of this really matter? The problem with the copy protection schemes they are proposing is that unless they want to put rights management on your ears the data has to go to analog at some point.
For years, the average consumer has made analog copies of a CD. While it may not have the best sound quality, most were happy with it. If I couldn't make digital copies of CDs so what, I'll run a loopback cable into my sound card and make a one off copy that way. It's still a hell of a lot better then tape.
I think the problem primarily (I could be wrong) is that traditionally iD's games are difficult to configure under Linux.
I tried to get Quake to run under Linux, and the biggest difficulty was getting the OpenGL to work properly. I spent a few hours on it and gave up it frustration.
Contrast that to CivII CTP. This setup was a breeze. Maybe iD should team up with Loki to help them work out the distribution/setup kinks.
You can read the whole article, you just need to sit through the ad. Big deal, Salon needs the cash.

I've generally found this tool very useful. If you're running a Windows box then try the Proxomitron
It should actually be The National Strategy to Promote Encryption.
(In PDF - they've learned not to use Microsoft Word. :-).
Ok and how is PDF any better then Word?

an unknown engineer making a change that breaks the OS which no one knows about nor could ever find out about?
Yes but can you play Quake with it?
