  1. http://xkcd.com/436/

Sometimes, technically correct pronoun usage can be unclear, as Mr. Munroe indicates above.
A solution to that problem would be to bend the rules, as the writer of TFS did

My summer camp at least had a sarcastic version of the Birthday song; it sounds like those places would just go for something cheesy.

"Happy Birthday" from Weird Al's debut album is an example of an alternate birthday song with at least some sarcasm/creativity (well, obviously, it's still under copyright too, but it shows the point)

  4. Murder and Inheritance on Woman Filming Sister's Birthday Party Gets Charged With Felony Movie Piracy · · Score: 1

In some areas, there are general laws against inheriting from someone who you were involved in the death of. This would presumably include the victim's copyright assets.
I know that the Daily Mail ain't the world's highest-quality news source, but it proves an extant example of the concept in British law (as well as a corollary; should relatives of the incriminated relative be allowed to inherit from the victim?)

  6. Re:The theater itself... on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

Exactly, $5 tickets seem much more reasonable. (In actuality, when I go to a theater, it's generally an $2 second-run one). A lot of the time, there are plenty of theater seats left anyway.

It's certainly not a *perfect* experience at a big-screen theater, as you referred to, but what I meant to say is that experience does have unique advantages, probably stronger advantages than "real CD over torrented MP3s", which seems to be one of the important distinctions referred to in the article title.

Making out in the theater? Never seen it in a real theater, but I have seen that go on. That was in a student lounge on campus - a rather bootleg movie theater - the disk [Serenity] was legit, and the laptop/VLC/projector combo is fairly standard, but the screen was, I kid you not, a large piece of white paper duct-taped to the window.). Upon hearing this anecdote, one of my friends said "Well duh, it's a movie."

And yeah, Serenity was a really good movie. The suggestion for both that and Office Space came from consistently reading Slashdot, and I agree with both suggestions. :P

Often I watch movies on my computer monitor (17" widescreen LCD) for convenience's sake, rather than even our home TV (44"). Also, I don't feel a need to have my entire music collection in FLAC/WAV or MP3-320 (although some of it is). "Good enough" is indeed good enough for me in my case. :P

  7. Re:DVD Sales Gap on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

I'm not sure how microTorrent handled the download; I'm hypothesizing that it may have filled in the beginning and end first (as has been talked about here), but started to work on the file in a more-scattered manner once it got that close to completion.

  8. Whole-album thoughts on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

How do album-only tracks fit into this analysis?

Mothership (a Led Zep greatest-hits album) has "Achilles Last Stand" as album-only for instance; this was the first example to come to my mind.
    http://www.amazon.com/Mothership/dp/B0011Z5IXC/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1259949927&sr=301-1

This certainly falls into the "albums worth owning" category (well, if I didn't already have their eight studio albums); in this case, I'd be inclined to buy the whole thing even if there weren't album-only tracks

This is the way I've often phrased it: If you kinda like the band, you're good with the hit singles and the greatest-hits albums, if you really like the band, you want whole albums.

Much of my collection is whole albums; even if I only have one definitive album for an artist, it can be a step up from the greatest-hits collection. In rather different genres, Straight Outta Compton, London Calling and Songs in the Key of Life are examples of where this is the case.
I have the whole discography from Zeppelin, Skynyrd and Weird Al, and a significant percentage from the Beatles, Dylan, Green Day and some others
At that point, there are *very* few tracks that I dislike enough to remove them from the batch.

For the component of my collection that's singles and greatest hits, I figure I'd be quite likely to enjoy an expanded selection if I bothered to go expand it. :P

  9. The theater itself... on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

Sure, you can download a rip or buy a DVD [legally or illegally], but it's different from the experience of the theater itself. A screen of a few dozen feet rather than a few dozen inches, for instance. That's probably worth paying for, at least occassionally. Not $10, though.

  10. Re:Rental might be for you on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

Even if the movie is a classic (cult or otherwise), I've found that I don't want to watch it too many times too quickly. I mean, I already know how the story plays out.
Considering my DVD collection, for instance, Star Wars and Office Space I've seen only a couple times, Revenge of the Nerds only once.
And then there's the issue of getting around to actually watching it the first time, one reason why I'm skewed against rentals, although I admit having rented it rather than having bought it may have gotten my ass in gear

  11. Re:DVD Sales Gap on Why Movies Are Not Exactly Like Music · · Score: 1

I'd confirm that VLC does just fine with unfinished .avi's (this was XviD codec). Downloaded with microTorrent. Was 74% complete, and the missed bits were scattered through rather than all at the end (but maybe the beginning/end filling practice doesn't work quite so well any more once you get to that point.)

  12. Interesting missing-data experience on One Way To Save Digital Archives From File Corruption · · Score: 1

One time I was downloading a movie that didn't quite finish.
I went to watch the file [XviD in an .avi container] in VLC, and most of the movie played fine;, obviously it stuttered over the missing sections
So, perhaps there's something to say for this format for video-archiving.
(This format doesn't compress much further (with .zip or .rar at least), so we wouldn't face compression-algorithm issues.

  15. My experience: followup on Man "Beats" World of Warcraft · · Score: 1

This game is round-based, an MMO but not an RPG; I've made a commitment to not play the next round, although I've made a similar committment to see this round through to its end. The round seems to be taking too damn long to end, though.
I'm a major player on what looks like will be the winning team; harassment (though serious) by the underdogs, as well as the admins' opinion of the victory condition, is dragging this out.
(Ironically, I'm still playing, but thanks to the uncertain round end, I didn't pay for as much premium-account time as I could have)

I've tried playing multiple such MMOs at once, and yes, it ain't pretty. I did switch to the current one because I figured its gameplay had more depth and nuance than the others.

I referenced Civ II and Starcraft [campaign and occassional AI] as a couple of my favorite non-multiplayer games. (Age of Empires, Sim City, and various others could join the list). While I do get caught up on several-hour sessions of those, they don't carry the multiplayer baggage, and they aren't running when I'm AFK.

I play one game of that type for several weeks, maybe months, at a time, but I can easily drop it and grab another CD-ROM when I feel like it.
Several months' patience seems necessary for these MMO rounds, and sometimes the rounds runneth over.

I do make use of Magic Workstation (free & closed-source, used to play TCGs online against real opponents) as well - sure that's multiplayer, but it's only several minutes to a couple hours at a time, the matches are separate from each other, and I pick it up exactly when I feel like it. Multiplayer like that (which includes things like Battle.net) only carries the minor annoyances of random interruptions during a 'session'.

Oh yeah, there's also an issue of serious stuff (namely, university, and to a lesser extent my Internet business), as well as the random personal projects (organizing my music collection, whatever).

Okay, okay, y'all want me to name names of the MMOs?
Oh, I'm not bitter really, I've just figured I've had enough of a good thing, and I know why.

I have an attention span of several months for any particular game, but this online game I'm talking about is going way beyond even that.

I can easily switch from, say, Civilization II to Starcraft after a few months, once the first game has worn thin. (I often find myself coming back to a particular game after I switched to something else for awhile) It's harder to disengage from an intricate online environment.
Just walking out, perhaps with middle fingers flying, sucks after all the time you've spent there.
