  1. Synonymous? on MIT Moves Away From Massive Lecture Halls · · Score: 4, Informative

"...the massive lecture hall synonymous with achieving a bachelors of science."

Synonymous? Maybe at large colleges, but guess what -- you can get a degree without that experience. It's called a smaller school. Sadly, many of my high school compatriots looked at "name brand" first, and size or cost second, if at all. For any high school slashdotters listening, I have a secret -- it's the same degree. My father went to state school in RI, and was recruited by Raytheon before he'd even graduated. He was working alongside graduates from all the Ivy Leagues, getting paid the same. It doesn't matter what the name on the diploma is, what matters is the effort you put in and the skills you provide for your employer. Save your money, avoid crippling student loan debt, and get those smaller class sizes anyways.

Smaller university equals smaller classes. The largest class I've ever had at my university was 40 students -- hardly unmanageable. Consider these things first, since you're going to school for your degree, not bragging rights, at least ostensibly so.

Even with Firefox3 I've seen it balloon to an astonishing 800MB. Now granted, this was after roughly 72 continuous hours of usage, with various extensions, and it hasn't done it recently, but I was still pretty shocked to realize it was consuming so much memory.

  5. No one does what I do? on iPhones, FStream and the Death of Satellite Radio · · Score: 1

The summary (and some of the comments) seem to make the assumption that I'm just going to rush out and get an iPhone with a great data plan. Sorry, I'm happy with my Verizon nothing-but-voice plan -- it's about as cheap as you can get.

So what do I do for music? Well at home, where there's Internet access, there's always Pandora. If you still haven't heard of it, it's a streaming radio service based on what they call the Music Genome Project, where music is classified based on its attributes, from major stuff like genre and artist to more esoteric things, like being in minor key with mostly keytars and a wailing androgynous singer...well, you get the picture.

But what about on the road, where there's no internet access? Well, I'll make the leap and say that if you're reading Slashdot, you have some variety or flavor of MP3 player. This seems a safer guess than the iPhone, since there's lots of them and they're pretty cheap. I've got a Sansa, and it works fine for me. I hook it up to a tape deck adapter (my car's a 95 Oldsmobile, no CD or AUX input for me) and put it on shuffle. Music problem solved, no need for satellite.

A bit off-topic, when my father bought his Honda Pilot, he got a three month preview of XM, and none of us were impressed. They repeated the same songs over a day, even more than normal radio, and the other upshot -- no commercials -- wasn't true. They were just all for XM, which seemed pointless, unless they were targeting their XM ads to those trying the free trial. Either way, it wasn't an impressive experience and certainly not worth the monthly fee when the car has a six-cd changer and an MP3 player input. He just does the same thing I do now and listens to his Stevie Ray Vaughn on the way to work instead of the radio.

I'm surprised no one else does this, though -- I figured I'd see plenty of other /. commenters saying much the same.

It's not commercial-free anymore. Every few hours you get a short little verbal ad snippet. It's not too bad; still far superior to 'real' radio.

Then, to put it bluntly, they're idiots. Do the math; graduate with the same degree debt-free from a state university like I will, or owe hundreds of thousands of dollars as soon as the ceremony ends? Guess what? My dad was hired right out of college at URI by Raetheon. He was working next to Harvard and MIT grads, and they were all getting paid the same. It's really true that after the first job interview, no one cares where you graduated from.

Well, that's my rant, mod it down as you wish :P

The main thing I use Skype for is to coordinate Command and Conquer 3 gaming sessions. Previously we used to use Teamspeak, but the server we used was fairly unreliable. What astonishes me is more that this latest release has gotten even my totally non-tech-savvy friends to download it and acknowledge its superiority to Internet Explorer 7. The Firefox team has not only improved the browser for those of us who already used it, but managed to convert another large segment of the market. It's sort of like the Nintendo Wii effect -- they realized it made more sense not to enlarge their slice of the tech-savvy pie, but to expand the pie to include casual users as well. Or at least that's how I see it, feel free to correct me with your own interpretation.
