  1. Re:Carbon Dioxide and Climate on Another 150,000 Years of CO2 Data · · Score: 1

My heart sinks a little further each time I hear someone try to use RealClimate as an instrument to further their (often amateurish) take on global climate change. As a fellow academian in the field of climate science (albeit much more recent, and on a regional scale) I cannot crow enough about the fact the the finest minds in climate science decided to collaborate off the record and in clear terms to help illuminate media and government reports that are often piecemeal or downright deceptive. NCAR is as sacrosant to climatologists as the giant black rock in Mecca is to Muslims. UK MET is one of the most forward-thinking meteorological institutions in the world. These are just two of the organizations informally represented by the folks at RealClimate.

Nowhere does anyone at RealClimate claim that global warming isn't happening. Nowhere will you find statements that support the often reactionary claims of the "it's all abunch of crap" crowd. RealClimate seeks to provide the additional technical and scientific information for knowledge's sake. I implore the amateur climatologists on /. to avoid butressing their own personal beliefs by misrepresenting the scientific findings of RealClimate's contributors.

  3. Yay for Asperger's Syndrome on Genetic Testing For Geekiness? · · Score: 1

Having been formally diagnosed last year with AS and having lived under its burden for all of my life, I can offer some anecdotes:

I am in the "gifted" category--I believe (this was some time ago) that I scored a 146 on the Stanford-Binet during testing at age 5. I have no idea what that means today, as I've lost all interest. I do remember that a score of 100 represents the 50% percentile. > 115 being the top 16, > 130 the top 2.5%, etc.

I have, and continue to have, occasionally serious problems relating to specific social or emotional situations. I am on the closer side of "normal" in the degree of my affliction, but if you ever see my reaction to an individual who is sobbing uncontrollably you'll understand what a mindfuck a full-blown case of AS must be. I simply don't understand it. I'll get confused, then angry--occasionally violently so. I cannot be in the room when my girlfriend cries, unless it's out of happiness (she takes care to give visual clues).

Not that it's relevant, but I score as an INTJ on the Kiersey Temperament Sorter. I have for 9 years now (having taken it twice a year each year since I was 14). The N means that I try to intuit that which doesn't come readily. I don't know if my brain is trying to compensate for a lack of social grace by extrapolating cues, but it occasionally serves me very well. It's also resulted in the loss of two jobs, the near-expulsion from my university, and more than one lost girlfriend.

Asperger's Syndrome SUCKS, particularly full-on cases. Autistic individuals are unfortunate; Asperger individuals are tragic.

A Scanner Darkly is one of the greatest pieces of "short" fiction of our century, and it's a shame that society regards Dick primarly as a scifi writer, when he was one of the most astute social commentators of our time. He just happened to be good at expressing his fears and thoughts through a captivating medium.

For the unitiated, A Scanner Darkly is at the front of the reality-bending/drug/psychological thriller genre. Before there was Thomas Harris or Hunter S. Thompson, there was Dick. God, I have shivers already.
