Very very very few slashdotters oppose GM crops in principle. Only a science-fearing luddite would be against such a thing. HOWEVER, if you take a good look at what's happened with companies like Monsanto, you'll see why many slashdotters are against GM food companies.
Yes, the IP issues with GM crops can get ugly. My big objection, however, is with what the crops are being modified to do. Roundup-Ready (tm) crops designed to survive more pesticides result in more pollution (because more pesticide is used), and have the potential for serious weed problems if pesticide resistant strains from different companies cross.
The promise of genetically modified crops was supposed to be food that tasted better, had better ripening behavior, grew bigger, and was naturally immune to some pests, so *less* pesticide could be used. As long as we're careful, I completely that kind of work, frankenfood or not.
Guess what: The same thing happened to other "scares", like the lead scare. These problems can be reduced or eliminated, after people stop ignoring them.
At least we don't have a birth restriction, unlike some countries. I don't really understand that - surely if, for the sake of argument, an Austrian gets the most votes[1] that's the will of the people.
I've heard that its entire purpose was to rule out Alexander Hamilton.
Meh, at this point, its not clear who has correctly defined communism.
The academic community, who coined it....
Or the political leaders who use it to describe themselves on a regular basis....
Yes, but China isn't really like the other real communist states that exist and have existed, either. While those were at least arguably a perversion of Marx's ideas (which weren't so hot, either), China these days is just unrelated.
I'm pretty sure people said the same of Apple before the NeXT people took over... I'm still sure someone's going to point out Apple bought NeXT - yes, they did, but NeXT's people took over Apple
The usual way to word that around here is that NeXT bought Apple for $-400 million. Alas, I didn't come up with that, but it's very apt.
I use comcast, yea I pay more, but you know what - i get 3 times the speed of verizon DSL Cable's a lot more hit-or-miss than DSL. Good cable, like my parents have and I had under MediaOne, is noticably faster than DSL. Bad cable isn't.
Ordering is a bit tricky, but I mostly started learning from The Secret Guide to Computers (somewhere around the 12th or 15th edition), and I think it was pretty good.
Of course, there are other ways to do it, too. A thermometer's better when you're less sure of yourself, though, and I usually overcook meat if I don't go out of my way to avoid it.
My strengths are mostly in flavoring, so frequently when my family is up at my parents' house, I'll make a marinade, and one of my parents will actually cook. At my house, I tend to lean towards casseroles and soups, since they're more forgiving on texture.
From TFA: EFI allows devices in the PC to be initialised before the operating system boots, and has features like full network support before the PC has even booted, allowing drivers to be downloaded and updated before an operating system loads.
I hope someone has thought through the security issues of that. Are EFI boards required to have hardware firewalls on the motherboard like the nForce 4 boards do?
No, because a baking thermometer does not track progress. During baking the temp usually remains constant. The temperature of the oven, yes. The temperature of the food, no. Food doneness is usuallly checked by the temperature in the middle of the food: 140-180F for various meats, and a little over 200F for bread.
Yes, I understand the logic behind checked exceptions, and I think it was an experiment that was worth trying. However, it just hasn't worked out. Checked exceptions force programmers to handle error correction when they're not yet ready to, so the code that's written tends to swallow errors invisibly. "catch (Exception e){}" has become as widespread in Java as "On Error Resume Next" was in Visual Basic.
Just extend from RuntimeException. Problem solved. Except that all the libraries throw regular, checked, Exceptions. You can catch them and rethrow a runtime exception, but it's still a nuisance.
Are you seriously saying the best thing about.net is that you can use another language with it? That the best thing about using it is that you can not use it? No, that.Net is not just one language.
RIAA handled recordings. This would be an appropriate joke about ASCAP.
I think they were talking about the OSI "Application" layer (HTTP, FTP, etc.), not applications as in what program you're running.
The debate is premature unless we have a clear and reliable definition of what human life and personhood is. That's not as easy as it sounds
That sounds easy? That's basically what the abortion dispute *is*, even if each side like to ignore that the other disagrees.

What's wrong with Wikipedia?
Mercedes bought Chrysler.
That was the position of the Catholic Church for a long time, wasn't it?

And Y2K.

It can be a name that matches yours. Then you have to prove that you are not the matching person. Think Indentiy Theif.
It can be looking like another person. Then you have to prove that you are not that person. Think Misintification.
This is why I'm in favor of a national ID system. Privacy is a lost cause, anyway, so let's make sure the tracking is done correctly.
Unless you're working under an employment contract where your employer claims ownership of everything you come up with.

Management isn't really a department. It's coming from Finance.

Overrated at the default score? Damn, that's harsh.

That's easy. The radar gun is a circumvention device.
Change the checks to warnings, maybe?
