I recall a very memorable moment in my life. I was in year eight at the time (about twelve or thirteen years of age for non Australians) and there were two year eleven or year twelve kids both very loud, both very physical and both annoying everyone else on the school bus with their ten minute argument which seemed to be on the edge of a physical conflict at every second. This carried on for a good while, eventually a year nine kid got involved and they sort of turned their built up rage on this new kid.

Having had enough this ongoing saga, I stood up and rather loudly shouted while staring them both down "You two shut up, else I'm going to beat the shit out of BOTH of you!". Looking back, this clearly must have looked comical. One kid half the size of these two older kids threatening them, yet the effect itself was what made this stick with me.

The rest of the bus went silent for a split second, then literally BURST out into both laughter and applause. Result? Amazingly the two kids in the main argument both sat down, shut up and remained quiet for the rest of the trip to the train station.

Sometimes even the perceived threat (however unlikely - a twelve year old kid beating up TWO fifteen year old kids heheh) is enough to stop a tirade.

Since then, I have never been afraid to step in when I see a kid getting picked on if they are outnumbered and clearly have their tail between their legs so to speak.

Having tended to always take the crafting part of a game rather seriously, I have made a very strong focus on a complex, but detailed crafting portion of the game - which basically allows for totally unlimited craft. To give you an idea, A spaceship will perform as well as the components have been built within it, which will be affected by the skill level/crafting systems they were build on, which will be affected by the quality of the resources that have gone into them. That's not even taking into account that you can basically put almost anything onto a ship if it has the room (apart from a few "must have" components. Same goes for stations, bases etc.

The rest is pretty much a straightforward explore/build/conquer concept. Three races (major factions) with a sprinkling in the middle.

It's a good ways off yet though, still in early to middle of getting all the code working.

Just becuase you have a point of view, doesn't mean you have to follow it through to it's inevitable conclusion. What if you are wrong and the others are right? I have an opinion, that our "human" way of life as it is right now cant be sustained by the planet, especially with the population explosion that we are undergoing.

Have a look at these numbers:
    Source: Population growth data
    1AD: 200 Million
    1000AD: 310 Million
    1750: 791 Million

Also, do you think that people today do more harm to the planet than say 100 years ago? How about 500 years ago? How about 2000 years ago?

The first thing I said in my post was No, advocating that would be wrong. but it doesn't mean it isn't true. Unleashing something like that is unimaginable - but if it were to happen naturally, it might just be a saving grace for the overall race.

As sad as it is, humans have become an invasive species on this planet. We are wiping out everything else. It's only a matter of time before we wipe oursleves out entirely. I wouldn't like to see that happen.

It's one of those funny things. I give to charity for example, which would pretty much put me at odds with my own thoughts that there are WAY too many of us here, yet it's simply so true.

The rate that we are chewing through resources and the way that we treat the other species (Eg, Oh, look a yummy fish. Lets catch them all and eat them. Oh.... where did all our yummy fish go?) is ghastly.

Again, while horrid, perhaps a better form of population control would be some sort of pandemic that went through and culled the numbers. Say, 90 out of a hundred? The irony is that it would be a more humane way to cut back the numbers. It would be indescriminate, wouldn't pick poor or rich, intelligent or thick - basically do all the dirtywork without anyone being able to point a direct finger at anyone else. Luck of the draw type thing. That way, at least the remainder could carry on without the guilt of anything so abbhorrent on their conciousness at night.

The MPAA/RIAA's methods of "enforcing" their IP are despicable. But without any protection, one of the current major assets of the US - media and entertainment - will be in serious jeopardy. Let's put it this way - if Chinese citizens actually paid for even a small fraction more of the American software, movies, and music they consume, the trade deficit picture would be significantly different. That is what Obama is talking about, not picking on homemakers who shared a few mp3s online. Hopefully the MPAA & RIAA can get a damn clue and start focusing on the real threat to their business - rampant, organized, professional international piracy.

The problem here is that for all his apparent "good will" he either doesn't get it, or he is banking on the voters not to get it and push something through.

It is essential to our prosperity and it will only become more so in this century. But it's only a competitive advantage if our companies know that someone else can't just steal that idea and duplicate it with cheaper inputs and labor.

You can't put a copyright on an idea that someone else in a third world country won't just copy WITH CHEAPER INPUTS AND LABOR. You can copyright a song, a movie that sort of thing yes - but unless he wants the US to simply be the entertainment supplier of the world, he is chasing the wrong fish here.

If you come up with an idea to say, make cheap energy through some form of funky technology (insert some form of wind, wave, whatever) and think that the chaps down the road in China, India and a bunch of other countries won't make knock off versions of it WITH FULL SUPPORT OF THEIR GOVERNMENTS then you are totally kidding yourself.

Just the same as if one of those countries jumped in with the exact same technology, I can assure you that the US government would be totally backing US to manufacture the same idea but in their own backyard rather than just buying tons and tons of the stuff from overseas.

While I agree with protecting your own IP, this whole process is dominated by protecting one small part of the overall industry and not the industry as a whole. That's why I think Obama in this is either being kidded or is hoping that his speech will float above the bullshit filters of most voters.
