The People's Republic of China has their ways and we may disagree with them but does the rice farmer really care about free speach? Isn't he/she completely happy in their own little world?

Chinease government folks know that if their people start longing for more and more of western culture their country will end in ruin... think about 2 billion people and the energy and other resources they would need to have half of the toys you do.

One side of me says, "stop projecting western values on the rest of the world." The other side would like to see a true global economy with truly open economies and world government... not in my lifetime...

The rebellion is on, napster is just the tip of the mp3 iceberg... and for us Canadians it's not much of a rebellion. Fair use is clearly defined although RIAA Canada would like to tell you otherwise. The fair use laws in Canada have been tested with video tapes and the MPAA lost.

You see in Canada you can copy something a billion times, as long as you do not intend to make a profit. I just don't know if there is going to be a test case, everyone is just too scared to take on the Lawyer rich RIAA.

It was a rather intreaging movie. You never were really sure what was going on... with 6th sense I knew a lot of people that declared -"he is dead man," 15 min into the movie. This one I nearly figured the good/evil conflict but got thrown a bit.

I mean we can't see english signs in quebec, french in Sault Ste Marie, so why should we have the freedom of using the net freely? You sure @home isn't run by Canadians?

    • for some people the best thing since sliced bread
    • Artists are:
    • providing entertainment - if it sucks they don't get money
    • puppets of their record company
    • cry babies - don't like the way the system is changing, find another job
This is just my opinion. Things change all the time. Our bodies, our governments, and our attitudes are constantly evolving. People resist change but if you do not change you WILL become extinct.

Actually what has been found in Canadian and Us studies is that violence in video games and tv do contribute to making some kids more prone to violet behaviour. Contact ACYS for further information. Their site is terrible but their contact info is there.

Essentially the trends have been a downward slide in violent crime. Most kids will not be influenced by tv or video games but there are some that are. We can not say that tv and video games have no effect on all kids.

As Jim Carrey said at this years MTV awards, 'if we just spend some time with our kids, it will be alright.' Essentially he is right. Most of the kids that do the shootings or hurt others are sociopathic, they have no concious. They are disconnected from their parents, hence disconnected from society.

The sad thing is these kids will exist even if all violence was taken out of tv, movies, and games. But they are influenced by it. They would also be influenced by a bird getting mutilated by a cat.

So saying banning violence is the answer is treating a symptom not the problem. Sure the incidence of shootings and ramdom acts of violence may go down but parents will still be ignoring thier kids, the real problem in western society.

If business practices are offensive or overly expensive to the consumer, the consumer will win out in the end. Sure the RIAA is trying to save its ass. They DO NOT have total control. If Napster servers where offshore could they sue them? and if they couldn't would they then try to block access from ISP's? or would they try to search every home, and every cpu to try and stop the evil mp3's? and what point does it become too much for the public to bare?

I guess my point is, ya corporate bullies will flex their muscles and eventually they will find their limits. The public can and will be pushed around until something real ugly happens (like the searching of all cpu's for mp3's). The biggest lesson geeks should learn is that if you can figure out a way of making more money your way then you will win... or you will sell it (icq anyone?).
