    Then there's dependencies -- if it depends on an ancient version of a library, your distribution may no longer have that version and it becomes a huge headache to keep the program working. Then there's changes to the desktop environment which can make it harder to use the application. For example a couple years ago there was something (I forget what application) which suddenly wouldn't show up in the system tray anymore because it hadn't been updated and was using an older method which KDE depreciated and eventually removed.

    It's my duty to use Skype so that the NSA's servers are cluttered with my uninteresting conversations, making it harder for them to find what they want. I do it to protect you.

    You may be ignorant of why it's happening, but everybody else knows that melting land ice in Antarctica increases the freezing temperature of sea water resulting in more sea ice. Hardly mysterious.

    Free doesn't mean infinite. Calls should be free, but limited in duration according to monitoring needs and availability.

    According to prosecutors, yes apparently Obama is lax on drugs. He's also interfered a lot less in state-level legalizations of certain drugs than previous administrations.

    There's no reason to think that the powers that be want people to not post anonymously in threads they've moderated. The idea is simply to not give people their automatic +2 score visibility in threads they've moderated. If you want to post as an AC with a 0 score, then that's good, and you'll be modded up if your post is worth seeing.

  9. Most cars on the roads in India in 2030 will probably be cars that have already been built today. That's only 14 years from now. Why would everyone in a poor country junk their car within 14 years? Heck, my car is 18 years old and runs great.

    Completely changing the nature of cars on the road is a generational, or even multi-generational project.

    it's easy and cheap to rent a car.

    This is very untrue for anyone but the wealthy. To rent a car I'd have to change my insurance to add comprehensive coverage, and the rental cost for just one day would be more than I spend on my car in a typical month.

    Take a look at the facts on the ground. Free enterprise has been growing considerably in Cuba the last few years, though largely from the bottom up with self-employment.

    The USA claims that Guantanamo Bay is a lease as well, not a conquest. Analogy: It's like renting an apartment from your brother at a super low token rate of $50 a month. Then he dies and the new owner of the complex tries to evict you. You refuse to leave the apartment and send the new owner a $50 check every month which he refuses to cash, and you tell everyone that this is a legal lease where you have every right to stay in the apartment for as long as you pay your $50 a month. For the next 55 years, because you're the one lucky renter who has more guns than the police who come to evict you.

    No, it could not be used, because it's bunk. The fact that someone can invent a magic box that's too difficult to figure out the trick to does not mean we can throw out physics. If it'd been invented by a serious researcher who had an open investigative process then maybe I'd take it somewhat seriously (though still skeptically).

    A 0.01g constant acceleration gives you the galaxy on a reasonable several-generation timescale. Unfortunately, there's probably no way to get free energy out of space.

    if Western technological civilization collapses (as Mayan, Roman, Hindu, Byzantine, Persian civilizations did) for whatever reason, like being overrun by a Caliphate, humanity may not retain this technical ability.

    I have good news for you: eastern civilization has also achieved space technology!

    Underground shelters don't protect you from the Vogon constructor fleet or a Death Star blast. Mars does.

    Admittedly that's the only examples I can devise where Mars offers any survival advantage.

    GWB was not amoral or especially self-serving -- he committed immoral acts, but I see no reason to believe that he didn't mean well and believe he was doing good. Cheney probably didn't mean well, but he technically wasn't president.

  19. Minimum wage increase fuels automation technology, relieves humans from drudgery. Everyone benefits from the increased efficiency, unemployment remains low, miserable fast food workers end up in slightly less miserable job just like the factory workers before them.

    Instead of pushing a button to adjust tightness, I just pulled two straps to the desired tightness. They called it "velcro" and it worked quite well and quite fast for those who didn't want to / couldn't tie their shoes, for hundreds less dollars.

    When I was a kid, the teenage hoodlum who lived next door shot out all the back windows of cars on the street. But that takes nerve, risks being caught, and only appeals to the more active violent type. Now, the maladjusted nerdy kid next door will be able to hack your car for a laugh from the comfort of his bedroom.

    Many of us don't have the luxury of a duopoly. AT&T doesn't offer DSL where I live, so it's either Comcast or Comcast.
