The GPL only exists as an imperfect solution in the current framework of copyright that exists. I don't think anybody would shed any tears over the GPL going away if copyright was eliminated tomorrow. The GPL is meant to make sure that what was free, stays free. If I were able to copy and modify ANY software I wanted with no restrictions because copyright was no more, then the GPL is not needed.
"the Thornton Wilder estate certainly deserves its share of the income"
Really? His estate deserves income? Do I deserve income because my ancestor may have nailed a shoe to a horses foot?
If you want to provide your ancestors with income, invest. Don't expect my grandchildren to pay your grandchildren just because you thought you were something special.
Really? Is morality simply based on ability to pay? Depending on what numbers you choose to believe the US currently has between 10% and 20% unemployment. Do those unemployed people all deserve to download anything they want for free because they're struggling?
Except that counter steering is not counter steering when you're trying to counter steer something where the wheels are 300mm (or whatever those monstrosities are) and your center of gravity appears to be about 8 inches off the ground. Not to mention, the riding position appears to have the riders arms almost at full extension. Looks like a death trap to me.
Wrong. The public is enriched by having seen the work. It is enriched further when it falls into the public domain, after the creator has had a chance to profit from his labors.
And this is why modern copyright is a complete failure. It is used today not as a tool to enrich both the copyright holder and the public through dissemination of ideas, but as a lock and key to prevent anyone else from using it by very intentionally not disseminating said idea..
I prefer to think I raised my daughter well to simply being lucky.
My daughter said something a few years back that made me smile. She may have been 7 or 8 at the time. Out of the blue, she very matter of factly stated that "Companies make things on commercials look better than they really are, just to make you want to buy them."
Don't try to think too hard about it, statisticians think about these kinds things in order to convince themselves that they're more intelligent than people who actually do something worthwhile with their lives. From the original problem:
"Suppose that Mr. Smith has two children, at least one of whom is a son. What is the probability both children are boys?"
They then go on to list options of:
Boy, girl Boy, boy Girl, boy
when birth order has nothing to do with the original question. Options one and three are the same choice, because birth order wasn't in question so the options are really:
Oh, and I also know of hardcore Democrats who support drastically raising minimum wage while at the same time supporting illegal immigration because they "do work that Americans won't, and their cheap labor keeps produce prices down for hard working Americans."
Governments are made up of individuals. Governments are a way for the largest group of like minded individuals to exert dominance over smaller groups of like minded individuals. I'll side with individualism over big government any day.
The contract was signed by the woman, not her husband. Not that I'm drawing judgment one way or the other, just saying that the person under contract did not die.
Are you sure the trolls didn't start taking over in 2002?

Interesting. I quit reading when he said

You know what else sucks?
I got laid of a few months ago, but my previous employer is STILL using software I created years ago.
Perhaps I should ask them to stop using it?

Sorry, you'll have to do better than that.
Too bad my last mod point just expired or I would have given it to you.
People can't live without 150 year copyrights?
Hell, even Cookie Monster only gets to eat one cookie a day now.

YouTube has DRMed content that HTML5 cannot at this time support. RTFA
Utterly incorrect. RTFA
Wrong. The public is enriched by having seen the work. It is enriched further when it falls into the public domain, after the creator has had a chance to profit from his labors.
Until Obama installs his kill switch.

I couldn't have been more proud.
Not if they look like that kid they're not.

You do realize, I hope, that murdering someone is illegal whether it's part of a pornographic film or not. Murder is not speech.
Do you feel it should be illegal to make a fake snuff film?
Oh, and I also know of hardcore Democrats who support drastically raising minimum wage while at the same time supporting illegal immigration because they "do work that Americans won't, and their cheap labor keeps produce prices down for hard working Americans."
Both sides are full of morons.
Got a link for that or just making it up?

"the people"

Fines are governments way of saying "You committed a crime, but for a sufficient bribe *wink nudge* we'll let you off the hook."
