I'm afraid you are right. Several people said that they voted leave but didn't think that their vote would make a difference. They are learning the hard way that it does.

It's a shame, as I'm a fan of direct democracy. This will make countries more reluctant before putting important matters to a referendum.

Do you know of any country other than Switzerland that consistently subjects important matters to a popular vote?

I am also an EU citizen.

The only good thing about Brexit is that people like you are soon going to realize what a terrible idea it was. So this poisonous propaganda will stop, and the rest of the union will be saved. I feel sorry for the Brits, though, they will suffer through this crap so that the rest of us don't need to.

Don't believe me? Let's just wait one year, and see what were the short-term consequences of this vote. Then we talk.

  9. I think you are mostly right, except for the part you say that France might want its own deal too. This is unthinkable. The EU is France and Germany. All these regulations that the British wanted to get rid off were championed by the French. Even the Euro was a French idea, rammed down Germany's throat. If France wants out, or wants its special deal, it is the end of the EU.

So you predict that when the patents expire evereyone is going to switch to them? Ignoring the fact that none of them switched to the patent-free Torx? Maybe they would convert to pentalobular, since they are so great.

But let's assume for the sake of argument that there is something wrong with Phillips screw. It is perfectly reasonable to think that there can be a better design. But to think that in 2009 one can really invent a useful new design of screwhead is just laughable. If they actually wanted to go with something better than Phillips they would have gone with Torx. The only reason to invent their own standard is to make it more difficult for people to repair their own phones.

  24. It might be difficult to keep the bodies protected from the sun, as spaceships tend to move a lot. Also, one needs to be careful about how they're tied, otherwise the ropes themselves will transmit enough heat to thaw them. Or infrared radiation from the spaceship.

Hummm. I think the best way to get frozen corpses is to put then in orbit around the Sun just outside Earth's orbit, so that Earth makes a permanent eclipse. That should get them down to just a few Kelvin.

  25. Which extremely low temperatures? I think you are suffering from the common misconception that space is somehow "cold". Well, it ain't, because the sun does shine there. It gets actually really hot. Spacesuits need active cooling systems.

In this particular example, the corpses would be attached to the outside of a spacecraft. I expect the spacecraft to be be around 300 Kelvin, since it's supposed to be habitable. Since vacuum is a really good thermal insulator, I expect the corpses' temperature to be around that. A bit lower than tha when in the shade, and a bit higher than that when exposed to the sun.

Actually this is a question I don't know the answer to: what's the equilibrium temperature of a black body orbiting the Sun more or less at the same distance as the Earth?
