"You have to OK all the things that an app can touch before you install it" 'zactly. And there have been several apps I haven't installed for just such reason. Whether this is FUD or not I think the issue does need to be raised so those who might ignore what access the app "requires" will think before blindly clicking OK to install. I think too, apps that are requiring unnecessary access (why does a satellite tracking app need access to my call log???) need a better way to be exposed as questionable.

"I don't know if Apple would ever release a Windows version of the iOS runtime." Why wouldn't they? It would be a potential new revenue stream for them, and one which they would have a lot of control over, so if it wound up being unprofitable they could just shut it down. They could even divide the market along "Apple products only" lines

The difference being that that add-in was arguably useful. It enabled click-once in firefox, iirc, which is a fairly handy experience for running small apps over the web. If I recall, Java does the same thing. The problem then was that firefox had no way to distinguish between a version with a flaw, and a version without a flaw, so they had no choice but to temporarily blacklist it (and there was that issue with not being able to disable it due to permissions).Browser toolbars, however, never strike me as a nice addition to a product without asking.
