Regardless of the legality of whether a motorist is responsible for dooring a cyclist, the cyclist is who gets hurt or killed, so it is the cyclists personal responsibility to stay OUT OF THE DOOR ZONE. (people just forget to check their mirror all the time, it will never change, no matter what the law says. and don't forget the taxicab passengers! i've had two doorings from them in my career. one of them was when a cab stopped abruptly mid block right ahead of me. i saw this coming as soon as the cab was stopping so i hit the brakes too but still slammed hard into the door as it swung open... and the lady in the cab cursed me out for interrupting her ability to exit the cab! i was so shocked i didn't know what to say. "bitch" comes to mind.)

Immunity is not from prosecution. The immunity being debated is against someone like the ACLU taking the Telco's to CIVIL Court, seeking some sort of monetary judgment. BTW, who do you think will being paying those court costs, lawyer fees and any pending judgments? Where to businesses, like the Telco's, get money? So, take a look at your phone bills and imagine the hike in fees to pay for this crap. har har...presuming the numbers you just pulled out of your ass are close to reality, (which my ass senses to be wildly exaggerated), do you really think that if the telcos could charge us $20 more a month they wouldnt do it already? Prices for this type of thing are equal to what the market will bear. and dont forget that the market already has existing competitors who are not burdened by these lawsuits.
I'm in favor of immunity because I already spend over $150/month for telephone service (2 Cells and a land line). I can't afford to spend any more. Yes, they rely heavily on that type of ethic and you do have much company. the joke is that the corruption and fascism you accede to will eventually cost you much more than $20 a month...and further, you should count things that cost you more than the mere monetary aspect of your quality of life. the world is a predatory place, if you give up your power, it will be exploited, guaranteed. take a wider view and resist this bald-faced power grab.
