Way back in the late 70's (or early 80's maybe, I forget) I and several of my friends set up a couple of Dobsonian telescopes in my grandmother's backyard. A half-hour or so later a police car pulls up and two cops get out and come around to the back to ask whats up?
They'd gotten calls that "Suspicious looking people" were setting up "mortars" aimed at the city.
Yes it really happened.
It turns out one of out neighbors had issues with my grandfather and was trying to use the cops as his private thugs. He came out pointing with the classic waving finger prattling on about hippies and pipe bombs and such.
There are a lot of unstable people out there and we are currently dealing with two political parties who both seem convinced that more govt. power is needed. It is now useful for govt. to use these people to shoehorn it's new policies into place.
I'd say the Gestapo tought them quite a bit. Unfortunately the difference between lesson and object lesson seems to have been lost over the last ~65 years.
There is, as I recall. The problem with that is that people have been doing it for some time as a tax dodge so the most likely response from a court would be increased suspicion. They'd assume that this is additional 'evidence' that you are suspect of something like tax evasion or worse, money laundering.
Thats why they are called CIO. It's the new feudalism, in which our 'betters' are supposed to look and act like our friends in order to get away with more. That and corporate politics. Any dept. that is there only to serve the rest of the business is the low monkey on the totem-pole and will quickly be run into the ground.
Unfortunately, knowing whose a** to sniff and whose to spurn is a bigger part of the CIOs role than tech is in most cases.
Microsoft people have openly said that they want fewer hardware manufacturers. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a major reason in changing things the way they did.
I can't see Microsoft doing this, a BSD core maybe, but the only way they'd go GPL with the core is if they'd found a way to de-claw the GPL.
Even if they did 'start over' they'd likely use it as an excuse to lock everything down to an even greater degree. Windows users might end up with something like the iPhone.
Good idea, while you're at it let's tax people who make unnecessary trips; It's much more efficient to eliminate any energy usage that is not production related.
Simply taxing foods that digest quickly would only push people onto the Atkins diet or something equally self-defeating.
A junk food tax is too short-sighted and unworkable. A lot of people get fat on foods other than those thought of as junk food. In order for this to do any good you'd have to have Govt. auditing our food intake.
Good advice, that. Read outside for an hour every other day, set out a garden, get a notebook and wifi and work outside for a bit, it only takes about half an hour or so of exposure every other day.
Indeed, the MPAA seems to genuinely believe that they are above the judgements of us 'commoners'. There was a time when I would have laughed at this, these days I'm only pretty sure that it won't go over.
Agreed - That's why monopolies are so destructive to competition, they essentially give you the ability to 'hit the reset button' every time you screw up.
This is a textbook example of the continuing breakdown of the old right vs. left political structure. It's been known (by those aware enough to care) for years that the most significant difference between the two is that they oppose each other in which special interests they favor.
It doesn't surprise me. Congress has never really had much of a spine.
The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history.

Hmm, Sarkozy, Carcosa, coincidence or not?
For those of us that like seeing our 'friends' beat the piss out of each other for out 'affections' ?
That's AOL's business model in a nutshell.
That's been tried, it turns out that vacuum cleaners suck at that.
After all these years it's still communist vs. fascist.
Not intentionally, no, but given the implications of this sort of thing it amounts to such.

This is undoubtedly why Microsoft wants fewer hardware producers. They want to push themselves into a position similar to Apple's.

A ninja is supposed to operate in utmost secrecy. If you know they are everywhere then they are not ninjas they are ninnys.

Aside: Did you know we can cure cancer with Vitamin D? Sadly, the dosis required is lethal to humans... they're working on it.
Hmm, we can do this with chlorine too, but it's problematic when used for medicinal purposes.

One way to deal with this situation: Arrange an 'accident' for that laptop. Something that wipes the hard disk for example.

Hmm, I wonder if Microsoft knew about this when they decided to patent spyware in the OS kernel?
10 minutes! Do these people employ editors? My grandmothers wind-up clock was more accurate than that.
