  1. Re:first question.. on AMD Shows Upcoming Phenom II CPU At 6.0 GHz+ · · Score: 0

Yes, they are going to be around for sure. It was just recently announced that they are selling their fab's off to some Saudi oil companies that are looking to get out of the oil business (and by "get out of the oil business" I mean "plan for the days when there is no more oil left so they can keep making money").

Also, they are splitting AMD into two separate companies, and dividing their debt between the two, with the majority of the debt being allocated to the new company that will be created which is going to do the fabs of their new processors (including the 45nm Phenom II's).

AMD will own 44 percent of the new entity, which will temporarily be known as the Foundry Company, with the Abu Dhabi government formed Advanced Technology Investment Company owning the rest. ATIC will invest $2.1 billion in the venture right way, with $3.6 billion t $6 billion to be injected later on.

So AMD is basically making it's last stand next year and in 2010. This is their last hurrah, but if the demos of the new chips are any indication, AMD will rule once again. And frankly, any competition to Intel is a good thing. Without AMD, I doubt Intel would be pushing to fab such great strides in processors like the i7. But I'll continue buying AMD just because they are so cheap. Hopefully all this $ that is being poured into them is going to help keep them cheap, fast alternatives to Intel hardware.

  8. Finally someone is sticking it to TW on Time Warner Cable Box Rental Inspired Antitrust Lawsuit · · Score: 0

Seriously, after suffering on Time Warner's crappy network for over 2 years now, I am so happy to see someone finally taking the fight to them.

Time Warner thinks that they can force customers to do whatever they want because they have the monopoly on most of the cable and internet service in most areas (especially in the eastern US). I have REPEATEDLY asked them for a better brand cable box, as mine is a piece of crap and has major problems (slow channel change, poor signal strength, choppy and often stuttering images, guide takes over 30 seconds to load, time changes cause the box to reboot) yet all they do is send me the same brand box with the same model number and I see no improvements.

2 years ago, because moving to my current location which only has 2 internet options (Time Warner cable and Frontier DSL), I was on Cablevision's IO Internet (OptimumOnline). Not only did this service cost INFINITELY LESS than Time Warner's service, but it is about 3 to 5x faster. I download upwards of 1.5 to 2.0 MB/s on Optimum's network, while on Time Warner I'm lucky to hit the 600KB/s mark.

I pray this lawsuit goes through, and Matthey at least gets them to allow 3rd party cable box's. Because I know there has to be better out there than these piece-of-crap Scientific Atlanta things.

While the theory is sound ("Fight fire with fire!"), illegal/malicious botnets have literally millions of potential additions to their botnets around the world, as they take over friendly PCs. A DoD BotNet would have to make use of, presumably, tens of thousands, potentially hundreds of thousands, of locally (or at least domestically-based) PCs for their botnet, making the price of maintaining such a network extreme, requiring scaling every year to keep up with the largest of the malicious botnets, and a level of security passed what we have seen before.

Also, since most already know that government networks aren't exactly the end-all be-all in networking security, wouldn't a beautifully constructed botnet with hundreds of thousands of potentially identical PCs, constructed for the sole-purpose of BEING A BOTNET, create the juiciest, most identifiable target to malicious botnets? Won't there be tons of attacks on this botnet to try and commandeer it or take it down?

Seems to me like they are going to fight fire with fire and wind up just adding fuel to both.

I left the following comment on MADD's blog...I highly doubt they will approve it, since all organizations like MADD don't take criticism well. Especially of the overly negative kind.

    ------

You said it yourself. "Drunk driving is a choice..."

If it is a choice, then everyone who makes a CHOICE to buy the game and CHOOSES to drive in that game drunk, then who is anybody to say that is wrong? Since this is a driving related issue, last time I checked people 17+ can drive. Why should the age be raised a mere 1 year to Adult Only (18+)?

Besides, it is a GAME. It is rated M for a reason. If you are going to drive drunk in real life, then playing a game where you can drive drunk isn't going to deter or reinforce the decision of the person playing.

I've had plenty of friends die from drunk driving. I will still be playing this game. As will millions of other people. Get off the soap box and stop trying to capitalize by standing on top of other people's work.
