  1. You're kidding? on FTC Targets Copy Machine Privacy Concerns · · Score: 2, Insightful

This has been an issue ever since they started pasting PC's on the backs and sides of copiers. What is that now? Something in excess of 10 years?

  2. Careful Apple on iPhone SDK Agreement Shuts Out HyperCard Clone · · Score: 2, Insightful

I just picked up a HTC Incredible and shall I say it is, incredible... the significant reasons are AT&T sucks and the iPhone is cool but it is so married to Apple's blessings. It's one thing to be cool; it's entirely another to be free to choose what you do with your tools. Apple should be careful because it's only a matter of time that something like Android will come and decimate your business model.

  3. WTFO on 3rd-Grader Busted For Jolly Rancher Possession · · Score: 1

This is ridiculous! Where is our country? Zero Tolerance policies are akin to Prohibition. It will not work in the long run. Why is government, local or otherwise, so bent on making the lives of the constituents living hell? I can only imagine what one Jolly Rancher will cost that family trying to defend their child. Also, what does it say to the poor kid? Oh, I see, get them acclimated to "authority early" so when they are adults they will not question. WTF? Is freedom of self determination dead or must we obey the each and every study of the month?

  4. These are, like a lot of other organizations, public institutions. We should be spying on them, we should be telling them what they can and can't do, and they should be accountable for their actions judged by the very people who employ them, the citizens. Since when did the government, in it's various flavors, develop this sense of entitlement? I'm keeping it brief...

  5. Double standards on State Senator Caught Looking At Porn On Senate Floor · · Score: 1

Hehe. For those that are trying to make the case for filtering, who are you kidding. The Senate filtering their own activity? That's like asking your company president to abide by the same rules as the common worker, not going to happen. Tee time is at 2. As for the material, presumably opened without prior knowledge of the content, this story is nothing more than gotcha politico crap. Who hasn't opened something questionable on the internet before? Now be honest...

  6. Re:I guess my gut feeling was right: Fuck the user on Terry Childs Found Guilty · · Score: 1

Is it just coincidence that we call our customers "users" aka drug "users"? "Pst, I got some technology over here..." as I, gently and without suspicion, lift the lapel of my rather worn trench coat.... as the story continues... Seriously, that is what it feels like anymore. Everyone wants it now and if you don't give it to 'em everyone goes all goofy.

  7. Humm. on Terry Childs Found Guilty · · Score: 1

I was writing a reply and realized something important. No one gives a sh_t about the opinions of the technical types. Too often we say no, we whine a lot, make ourselves far to important, and cost too much. What's the law with out enforcers? What's google, facebook, youtube with out us?

  8. Re:Didn't see that one coming. on 3rd Grader Accused of Hacking Schools' Computer System · · Score: 1

Yeah, that was refreshing wasn't it? I thought for sure there was going to be a "chicken little" story how a kid hacked the schools system and is now a cyber "terrier" (I shan't type the real word). I also love how news stories leave out the important details like the system itself was vulnerable to compromise by a simple CTRL-C at the logon prompt that dropped the "hacker" off at the root console. Seriously, have you seen some of the crap that is out there?

  11. American as apple pie on How Infighting Hampers Innovation At Microsoft · · Score: 3, Insightful

And this notion suprises anyone? It's not unlike any large family where one kid stuffs a sock in anothers mouth, someone taddles on Johnny, or another dumps their sister from the wagon. Turf wars exist everywhere; the challenge is to minimize them. But... How do you do that when competition is king? Where wining the battle is put before what is good, just, or honorable? Just asking?

  12. "Necessary Evil" on Why "Running IT As a Business" Is a Bad Idea · · Score: 1

I've been the wearer of many hats in both public and private IT organizations. I have been known to term IT efforts to IT managers (who are often there as non-technical sorts) that the effort is seen as a "Necessary Evil" IT costs money; equipment, software, employees, benefits, etc. The real benefits of the effort are often taken for granted and not seen (that is if you are doing it right). The fact is that business cannot survive or compete without some type of reliance on IT in its many forms. For management to continue to deny that IT exists and requires resources is irresponsible. IT is as essential as paying the bills, marketing, and sales; maybe more so. Pull the plug on the data center and see what happens. (Been there done that, by accident of course...)

  13. Other industries on How Do Militaries Treat Their Nerds? · · Score: 1

In my experience, I can imagine it like other industries. They know they need services, but don't appreciate them nor do they care to acknowledge what it takes. I told one of my managers in the past regarding training and resources, "It's like asking a beat cop to patrol with out a side arm." It is tiring...
