I promise you that many people are surprised. I was an XP user after ME, then Vista, then I just said screw it. Your browser sucks and you can't make a decent OS. My opinion changed with W7 and what M$ is trying to do with IE. They have always been a giant, but as somebody stated earlier, that competition is helping them avoid travesties like ie6. At least they are making better progress now

When you buy a fully configured PC, the placer you buy it from still, normally, builds it for you (unless we are talking about a laptop or something like that). Those companies building your PC's order the parts to build these. All they are is a middle-man for what most of us /.'ers already do. So unless everybody migrates to factory made pc's (laptops, netbooks, tablets, etc), then PC's will not go away anytime soon.

For a Smartphone, you don't have people sitting there configuring their phone like they would a PC.

And for smartphone vs PC, to get a high-end smartphone on a phone plan, you can get it for what, 300-500 depending on the phone for a top of the line phone. Yeah, pre-configured top of the pc, you are not getting it for 300-500. It is cheaper to fly through phones, but that does not mean that PCs are dying just because smartphones sell more.

I have not done the math, but what is the ratio of bus passes sold vs. motor vehicles bought? If more bus passes are sold, under this same notion, that means that people find cars obsolete and that within 18 months, cars will go away and everybody will take the bus. Do you see how silly that sounds?

When something is cheaper, more people will buy it, but that does not for one second means that the more expensive item is obsolete or going away.

I was under the impression we could download the OS itself and not just use it on proprietary hardware. If that is the case, if vendors are trying to change it in their favor, then that would be dumb since you could always dump that version and get the version directly from Google. Honestly, anybody on /. is smart enough to google this, but you can technically download the beta right now and use it. If that is possible, then It should not matter what 3rd party companies decide to do when you can seriously just reinstall the OS with the google defaults, and not the Samsung defaults

Tell that to the 10mil+ subscribers of WoW. With the new expansion getting released, WoW players are going nowhere. Tell the pro Starcraft players that as well. The average consumer doesn't use their pc much anyway, and most of that can be handled through their ps3 or phone now, so they might stop using it alot less.

What about college students? So, how are they going to type up their exams now. On a smartphone? I think it would be absolutely horrid to write a thesus using a phone. Ouch.

    18-months? Really?

Now, I consider myself an avid pc gamer, and I have no plans to move away from that anytime soon, plus the 6 cores are starting to roll out in larger numbers. 3-D technology is getting implemented more and more into PC's (I believe it is NVidia who is doing a bunch of stuff with it).

The thing is that PC's can do so much more than a smartphone, and PC's are upgradable (not just software, but hardware) and it won't void your warranty (well I guess if you buy a PC from Dell or something it might since I don't know the rules with pre-made machines). The point is that as pc's evolve, you can easily evolve and adapt with the times by upgrading your PC. To do this with a smartphone means that you need to buy a new phone. Not all that smart if you ask me

Wow, I was seriously going to post this very same thing. I do see that there needs to be a healthy balance between too many comments and not enough comments. I have seen code where somebody put a comment behind something like this:
String startdate; //start date of the application
Yeah, there is no need for a comment there. It is pretty apparent that is the start date of the app. Also, I agree that if you are doing anything complex, comments need to be in there.

What I normally do when I know I am going to write something complex is to write out in plain English what is going to be happening through comments, and then program around the comments. I then use the comments almost like a TODO list to help me along. It helps me and it helps anybody who would look at this code later on down the line.

Complex code + no comments + complex code giving errors = huge pet peeve of mine

Now, I am not saying hand your code to me on a silver platter, but it would be nice to at least know what is going on without wasting precious time figuring out every little thing you did so that I can fix your error.

Granted, I was smart enough to get a plan that is nationwide so I am not hit for roaming charges, but this is first hand experience from somebody who uses a phone that is completely hated on. My phone is supposed to be really, really bad, but yet, it works just fine. No dropped calls. I have no clue what any of you are talking about. Find a way to send me a private message and I will personally call you. It will go from my Nebraska number in Vegas to Google Voice, then to you, or I can directly call you.

So people are either dropping their phones in the toilets and wondering why they don't work anymore, they are getting the cheapest possible phones on the planet, or they are bitching to bitch. I say this because my phone is so old and crappy to where Nokia themselves to not even support the N-Gage QD anymore. I have no problems with my phone or playing somebody online in a game on my phone or data or texts or anything.

I no longer live in the USA, but the CSA (Corporate States of America LLC). All it is going to take is one single person to start revolting to get everybody else started. Now, there is a difference between refusing TSA stuff at the airport and revolting. The corporations have taken over to the point where they are now controlling your very security.

We all know these were put into place for money. If you doubt me, I am sure another /.'er can post a link to back that statement up (I am too lazy).

The main problem I am seeing is the generation under me. I am currently 28 years old, so I am talking about the generation that is just getting to their early 20's. More and More they are all getting assimilated to the Jersey Shore/The Hills type attitudes. Do nothing but listen to Clear Channel Radio, go to Lil Wayne concerts (nice rolemodel BTW, as he just got out of jail for gun possession), watch horrible reality TV shows, and then finish the day with some Farmville. My sister is this way, and it is weird. You will mark me a conspiracy theorists, but seriously, sometimes she gets so into this stuff to where it is like she is hypnotized.

Let me clear this up. She is not physically hypnotized, I mean she is so into this life to where as long as she can continue that life, she does not care about anything else. Her boyfriend is the same way, and I have met many people from that generation that are pretty much the same. They don't care about politics, they don't care about what corporations are doing to the Earth, they don't care about world issues. They just want to stick to their corporate people that want them to be "friends".

Once we wake these kids up, we will have an army of followers. They already follow everything MTV and Clear Channel tell them to do, we are just readjusting the dial. An army of violent, crazy followers at our disposal.

Now... ...who is going to start it? It is not me, I already suggested it, which means I automatically opt out

Now, if a person already had Symantec, we would be trained to talk that person into buying this as well. Symantec loved it when we would get them to pay for our version of Norton (which somehow seemed to never work right), use the EarthLink version (which was a paid service), and talk them into keeping their old Norton subscription just because "you never know".
