  2. Re:Our professors seem to favour MathType on Modern LaTeX Replacement? · · Score: 1

    I loved MathType. My love affair ended yesterday. I wanted to do a simple function in bracket notation: T(x) = (3n+2)/2 if n is odd, and n/2 if n is even. (Yes, I'm one of those Collatz people)

    Now on my WINDOWS version of Mathtype, this sort of thing Just Works. But now I have a mac, and on my MAC version, the bracket is all in pieces and awful. This is with the real MathType, not "equation editor." It looks bad on the screen, when I save as .pdf, and I even tried saving as .html and it still is all broken up. I wound up creating it in MAPLE and doing a screen capture, and then cropping the screen cap.

    Boo to MathType; at least the Mac version.

    (BTW: The LaTeX code for that function:

    $T\left( x\right) =\left\{
    \begin{array}{cc}
    \frac{3n+1}{2} & n\text{ odd} \\
    \frac{n}{2} & n\text{ even}%
    \end{array}%
    \right. $

    Even if you have never seen LaTeX, I'll bet you can figure out what is going on. The syntax is not that bad.)

    I've been giving talks on the Prisoner's Dilemma for a few years. (No original research, just following the thing and explaining the game to the Youth)

    It is kind of an orthodoxy in the literature: Tit for Tat always ties or loses by a little bit, but in tournaments, it is the best strategy.

    Well - it ain't. Someone found a way around it. Instead of urging rule-changes to prevent this new challenger, we should all be happy and excited that PD tournaments have just got MORE INTERESTING.

    I can't wait to see what happens next - what new programs will emerge to have the advantages of Tit for Tat but also the ability to defend against Master-Slave programs that communicate with each other.

    The game has changed - now let's leave it alone and watch.

    It's all about his actions. Lots of beloved figures believe in God. Lots of hated figures don't. It ain't God. It's actions.

It advanced to become pre-eminent. Then it sat down, and tried to tie everything up to maintain itself. Internal politics and interests fought over shares of the pie.

    I can't believe that. It is easier to believe in God than to believe that someone thinks that people hate Ashcroft because he is a believer.

    Do you think people hate Clinton because he believes in God? Do you believe that people hated Reagan because he believed in God? Do you think people hate Osama Bin Laden because he believes in God? Do you think that people hated Will Rogers? He believed in God, and was beloved.
