The affordable pay as you go plans tend to be available only for feature phones. For example, Virgin Mobile USA's "payLo" plans starting at $7/mo appear available only for feature phones, and Android phones have to use a $35/mo "Beyond Talk" plan that has as many voice minutes in a month as I'll use in a year.

In a family though it makes sense. My spouse got me a Galaxy Nexus for Christmas and her cousin (like 8) got his first cellphone from his parents for Christmas.
But, that's the only case in which cell phone gifting makes sense, re: if the gifter continues to pay.
Son, been there, done that with too many friends and relatives. Some really good friends died from complications of AIDS and believe me when I tell you some begged me to end their lives. It isn't doctors giving up, but doing their damndest to keep people alive when there is absolutely no hope of survival, and sometimes survival hurts like hell.

Apple has dominated for along time, and rightly so. Their appliances (in every sense of the word) do what Joe SixPack wants them to do without having to put any thought into it. Never mind that iTunes (which you're tied into) is abloated, slow piece oif crap that won't even let you do anything without the blessing of the great god Apple.
So, what's your point? As of Dec. 2009 Windows had a 92% share versus Mac OS with 5.11% Now with Mac OS all the machines were Apple products (or ~ 99% anyway) and Ms Win7 was being run on about a gazillion different companies products. Using your analogy, that demeans Windows. Somehow, I don't think so.
