    A useful trick when task manager will not work, copy the task manager .exe from a nother machine and rename it any other name.

    It will then run and allow you in to start cleaning up the crap.

    Nothing to do with earth crunchy I am afraid.

    Hemp clothing is great lasting. I had a pair of hemp jeans that lasted 5 years before wearing out. Normal cotton lasts a year if I am lucky.

    That is propbably why we dont see much hemp clothing it lasts to long!

    Agreed, but just because they have put in 100 pairs does not mean they will all get a copper circuit to the DSLAM/exchange.

    If they use a RIM (remote multiplexer)

    Damn it I spelt it RIMM previously (That was RAMBUS of course!

    Link states DLC are used in the US which apparently fit 12 VF (Think 28.8k modem) circuits into each pair, using 2 pairs to create a T1 line from the RIM to the exchange.

    Who knows, you may have the capacity available, but increasingly these days RIMs are used to maximize the capacity of existing copper.

    DSL/ADSL requires a pair all the way to the Exchange/DSLAM to get maximum speed. I am about a kilometer from the exchange and get 15 mb/s

    It's worth bearing in mind.

    Don't get me wrong, I would like Gigabit to-but that will almost certainly need fibre.

    Copper gigabit ethernet cable runs can only be a maximum of 80 meters long

    I think it is highly unlikely that there would be many spare pairs.

    In .au RIMMs are used to allow multiple pots on a single pair via frequency division multiplexing, in such a case no-one that is connected via a RIMM can have ADSL services.

    The problem with all copper lines is capacitance,
    which acts as a low pass filter. The longer the line the more high frequencies are lost, which in effect takes the "edges" off of the pulses, making differetiation difficult. No ammount of technolgy is going to change the laws of physics. (:

    All kinds of tricks are use such as QAM and different forms of compression to cram more down a copper pair.

    All POTS work on 2 wires. Even if one has several pairs coming into the premises it is unlikely that there will be enough spares all the way to the exchange.(Would you put in double the ammount of copper needed on the off chance that it might be needed later.

    The extra incoming wire are mainly for spares in case of faults.

    Here in .au I have ADSL2 which at my current location provides 15mb/s.

      I already use maiininator for a lot of sites. My mistake was trusting ElReg with an hotmail account I sometimes use.

    Pay is around au$48K fulltime (About $25/hr), but I only work 75% of a week.

    I am surprised you needed 6 people fulltime for
    only 500 machines. At that rate it would take 4 people fulltime to replace me!

    I have only 4 servers though, 20 seems a lot.

    I have no formal qualifications in computers, but 30 years of electronic/hardware tech work in many fields, origianlly a Telecomunications tech, but have worked on FAX, printers, copiers and cash registers, many of which had dedicated(And arcane) operating systems. I dont pretend to be a software expert, other than getting it running initially.
    Using it is the users problem!

    I only work part time as I have FSH muscular dystrophy which lead to me retraining myself on networking 10 years ago.

    Or run the patches that allow XP to boot in any hardware. One just pulls the image from a network share, boots then installs the required drivers, then reimages to the share.

      Rinse and repeat for each type of workstation you have. You then have an image that will work in all your hardware. When a new type comes along repeat the process.

    Note; It is best to start the image on the oldest hardware you have. If you have any single core machines, halfix can sort out the HAL

    I rarely need to use setup.

    In 28 hours per week I manage 280 PC in 4 networks across 2 campus, all windows.

    We have corp MS deal which is $5 per seat per year for all MS software. Server licences cost us $150.

    In that time I do all maintenance, installations and purchasing.

    In the last 5 years the servers have only been down when power and UPS failed. NO crashes.
    About 6 PC in total have needed to be reimaged in the whole time. No viruses at all.

    Using Ghost and a few simple patches I can boot a fully setup image in every different kind of PC hardware I encounter. It usually takes no more than 1/2 an hour to load a new type of hardware driver set then reimage.

    Frankly there are so few software problems I cannot see how a more complex arcane OS would save me time!

    I have tried Linux several times over the years.

    It still cannot deliver as good a Wireless auto connect/roaming as windows, a deal breaker for me.

    As so little of my time is spent on software, there is simply little to no advantage in changing to Linux.

    Flaws simply are not the issue you have stated.
