Bear in mind that there were terminal engine failures during that flight, and the remaining engines were completely stuffed after landing.
The ash melts in the high temp part of a jet engine and condenses to a glass like solid on the rear compressor blades, they were very lucky those engines restarted, and ran long enough for a safe landing.
I am 50 have smoked for 36 years and just recently spent 3 hours above 12,000ft in an unpressurised sailplane with no sign of trouble, as indicated by a pulse oximeter.
According to your figures I should have 50% or less of lung function, and as for my uncle who gave up at 87 recently......
The worst thing about ElReg is the chronic censorship that takes place on their forum.
The do not allow criticism of their "writers", and on one occasion, I recieved a mail from a columnist, that dickhead Orlowski, which he could only have sent if he had access to my registration details. When I tried to post this on their forum, all the posts were rejected by moderator. It seems they did not want the fact they play fast and loose with your personal information published.
Dont EVER give them accurate info on their registration page.
Ah yes, graphic designers, people who can use a mac but cant read. In newspapers their job is to remove any remaing useful content to be replaced by a graphic.
"Stephen Conroy is a classic example of someone who will be *instantly* turfed out on his arse at the next election,"
Whilst a most desirable outcome, that is very unlikely as Conroy is in the number 1 position in labors Victorian senate ticket.
It would be unprecedented to have no labor senator elected, and as our senate is based on proportional representation, unfrotunately Conroy will probably stay.
Hopefully cabinet will be aware of the damage Conroy is causing amongst younger voters and he will be removed from the communications portfolio.
Even if this occours, he will probably be replaced with someone just as bad, remembering that the previous liberal minister, Richard Alston was known as the world biggest luddite due to his attempts to censor the internet.
PS For those of you who remeber the fuss about game ratings in au being blocked by SA attorney general Michael Atkinson, he has now resigned from his position and will be on the backbench for the upcoming term.
When tested back in WW2 radar managed to see a wood and fabric glider 20 miles out in the english channel (Phillip Wills Wiehe, see "On being a bird"), so good luck avoiding it in your DA40. (Thats if the engine still goes eh?)
Composite does not stop radar detection, if it did there would have been a metric shitload of cash wasted on Stealth aircraft shapes and their special paint.
Glider pilot here too, my concern is with GPS altitude, as you would know, FAI loggers and FLARM both use pressure sensors for altitude data, as GPS suffers from the occasional wild swing in its accuracy.
I wonder what ADS-B does in this respect, i suspect they probably will have a pressure sensor.
Actually I think the EU system will be a good addition. Units which diff both the US and Euro systems should be even more accurate and reliable in general than any single system.
Actually GPS altitude is a problem. accuracy varies quite a lot.
Glider pilots use GPS data loggers to claim FAI acheivement flights (50km,300km, 500km etc) the official secure IGC loggers MUST have a pressure altitude sensor.
Airspace above FL10 is generally denoted in pressure altitude too. GPS is simply not accurate enough for altitude seperation purposes.

Name one this century, or last.
I would never swap australias constituional monarchy for the US system.
I much prefer our model where the head of state is merely a formal position with no power really, and the leader is selected by the vote of the current elected goverment.
We still have our senate as a house of review, but do not have the crazy situation where one man, a president can overrule the wishes of the voters as expressed at an election, and vice versa.
Novenmber last year there was a truck fire near Waikerie in South Aus. It was a wine truck.
All the wine had smoke damage to the bottles.
They dumped the whole lot in an area being filled on the airfield. There was a mountain of different yellow tail wine 10 feet high and 20 feet in diameter!
All sorts of people were turning up late at night to grab a boot load-for free!
Actually 40:1 glide ratio is so last century.
Most modern 15M sailplane acheive 42 or better.
Flapped 15m as high as 45.
18M 50:1, full ballast 33:1 at 100kt(185kmh)
Open class current max glide is 70:1, the ETA.
It is no coincidence that the Captains of the aircraft in the Gimli and Azores landings mentioned were expert sailplane pilots.
There is no going around again for a landing glider, so glider pilots have to be very good at energy management.
You just have to get right first time every time.
Being a glider pilot myself, I always prefer to fly with a power pilot who has a gliding background.
Bear in mind that there were terminal engine failures during that flight, and the remaining engines were completely stuffed after landing.

It seems some are confusing propylene glycol and ethylene glycol, as used as an anti freeze coolant in engines.
Quite so the key with ALL drugs is use, dont abuse!
Oh really Colin?

97.5% of statistics are made up on the spot!

Poor old Tim, just because he cant walk and talk and chew gun at the same time, he wants to ban everyone even those capable of doing so.
Actually Timmy, despite your rant,I can talk on the phone and drive at the same time without having a problem.
It may have escaped your notice but some of us can even talk to our passengers without crashing!
Dont assume the rest of the world is as inept as yourself.
Like those 1200W cheap PC speakers that were around.
The only way to get 1200 watts out of them would be by setting them on fire!
Tell that to his Mother, Dame Elizabeth murdoch who is 101.
He could easily be around for another 20+ years! ):

It may have escaped your attention, but your govt propaganda may not in fact be true.
So, you consider murder of civilians a minor incident. Would this happening to your family be a minor incident?

"It drives audiophiles to distraction".
So where's the downside (:
In most of the higher end laptops the line in jack is on the docking station. (Dell precision M60/70,
HP NC8230 for example)
It is quite right that most laptops do not have a line in, but some do.

unable to taste the difference between white wine with red food coloring, and actual red wine.
Why bother with the colour if they are doing the test blind?
