    Short version (and please note that English is not my native language):

    First, it's not a "perpetual machine" as some idiots claim because you need electrical power to make it work. The great thing of this drive is that as it does not need fuel (electricity only) then you do not have to carry a fuel tank with you, and therefore your reach becomes limited only by the amount of electricity you can generate (as example we already have technology to make a reasonable nuclear reactor run for years in space). Multiply a small constant impulse for a few months or years and you can achieve speeds impossible with current rockets, thus making it possible to explore other planets in a plausible period of time

    In fact it is a matter of choice for the super-rich. If the mass automation works we will have a very big mass of people who have no way to support themselves for not having jobs, and note the crucial detail that they will not get jobs even being excellent workers. They will not have jobs because they are lazy as some right-wing retards will claim, they will not have jobs for the lack of jobs.

    This mass of people will not go away, then the super-rich will have three choices:

    A) Build a robot army of exterminators to eliminate the "surplus people" (me, you, anyone that is not super-rich);

    B) Do nothing and be killed sooner or later in the wake of the mass of hungry and desperate people;

    C) Use a portion of the billions obtained through automation and create a basic income to avoid the consequences of option B;

  11. True, jobs per se will never completely disappear. But, the fundamental problem is how many of these jobs will pay enough for you to live from it. It will not help you get a job as a gardener if your salary is not enough even to not go hungry.

  12. The idea from this series is a good start. The "BASIC" income system from the story is, as the name says, basic. You will not go hungry and will have a simple place to live, but if you want something beyond that you need to look for a job.

  13. When all or most jobs disappear It will be critical the existence of a UBI. Unless you know a way to literally kill all who will be jobless (and notice that these people will not go down without a fight). I think it's better to implement a UBI than try to kill 90% of humanity, do you think?

    On the relevance of the theme for Slashdot, I honestly believe it is really important when it involves the employment of all who read it. You will not be able to read technology news if you don't have a job or if you are trying to escape the hunters-killers of the 1%.

  14. On Brazil, right now, the theatrical experience is a PoS. Dirty projection room, projectors inadequate and poorly maintained, inadequate screen, really expensive (and bad) popcorn and mediocre projection quality. Is way better to simply get a big TV and see your films at home.
