You would have figured that they would point out that the first GTA released in 1997 included Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas all in the same game. Most gamers who even played the first GTA when it was released never got past Liberty City. I personally never got past San Andreas. The original GTA was far more difficult than GTA3, mainly do to the fact that messing up a mission was a far bigger set back in GTA. You couldn't just do the mission over again, and it would also reset your score multiplier making even harder to raise enough money to get to the next city.

While I never played GTA2, I played GTA when it was first released in late 1997, early 1998. I loved it, wondered why nobody else was playing it, and wondered why the critics gave it a thumbs down. Motorcycles, multiplayer, and many other features were cut for GTA3, yet most gamers were first introduced to the series with GTA3... and most have no sense of the series history.

I have even heard and read reviews were people claim that GTA3:VC was not as good as GTA3 because GTA3 was new, revolutionary, experimental, etc... while GTA3:VC was too much like GTA3. Well, I hate to point this out, but GTA3 is allot like the original GTA. Sure the presentation had improved ALLOT, but other than that, very little had changed.

In my opinion, each entry in the series has its benefits. My favorite so far is GTA3:VC because it has the best presentation out of all 3, and you don't feel like a loser by the end of the game... you feel like a kingpin!

Elite and Sid Meier's Pirates! are other examples of early non-linear video games that EVERY gamer should play. Yes they are both still fun to play today. Elite is even a true 3D game, with 3D graphics, physics, and world! Considering that the game was made in the early 80s for the NES and BBC Micro, that says something about programming skills.

The Atari 2600 scene has seen lots of activity in game development recently. They even go as far as to mint actual carts with labels, manuals, and boxes for their games. Even better, they tend to do the labels and packaging in the same style as the late 1970s Atari games. You can buy these games from sites like Atari Age.

Another company, VG Wiz provides cart minting services, and even has a NES flash cart under development. Tototek recently made flash development carts for various old console systems: Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphics 16, and even the SNES. These carts are great for playing ROMs on the actual console system.

Hopefully Grand Theftendo sees a similar fate as the Atari 2600 homebrews, and gets minted to an actual cart with PCB, plastic enclosure, label, manual, and box. The NES scene has been needing some full fledged fan developed games for a long time now.

I have played the GTA series since the original was released for DOS in 1998. Most people don't realize this, but the game has been basically the same thing since the original GTA. The basic formula has not changed at all with one exception (multiplayer), only the presentation has improved.

The graphics and sound have dramatically improved, multiplayer has been dropped, and the game has been split and sold in separate chunks... yes the first GTA had Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas all in one!

Most people probably never got past Liberty City in the original game, so it was wise to split them up... oh and creating content for the GTA3 series is allot harder than doing so for the GTA1 series.

It really bothers me how much gamers and critics ignored the first GTA. Critics bagged it as a gimmic and gamers ignored it. Hell, the Gamespot reviewer of GTA3: San Andreas even goes as far as to say

the concept of a multiplayer mode in GTA is pretty mind-blowing

when multiplayer has been in GTA since 1998. Just imagine if movie critics were this ignorant of history. "The concept of a non-linear storyline in a movie is pretty mind-blowing"! Yup, they would be laughed at. I guess the game industry still has allot of growing up to do.

I know this because I have used Mozilla since version 1. I currently use it as my only browser on Linux. The bug where a form can have its focus stolen by another tab happens accidentally all the time, and it is really annoying and has been really annoying from some time now. Any Mozilla user has to have come into contact with it, so why has it not been fixed yet?

The other more general problem of one tab being able to open a dialog box while viewing another tab is also a problem. Pop-ups of any kind should be isolated to the tab they originated from. Tabs should "contain" the page they have open as well as all pop-ups and dialogs the page generates. This would prevent the spoofing demonstrated AND it should make web browsing far more structured and organized for the user. It would effectively add a heirarchy to browsing, as new windows and dialogs generated in a tab are only displayed when that tab is selected and furthermore they are "contained" within the tab's main pane.

I will be surprised if the form focus bug hasn't been bug reported several times over already. The tab dialog/pop-up bug has been complained about, but I could see it not be formalized as a bug report as it is somewhat consistent with modern desktops like Windows. Still, it is a problem and a "tab containment" design should be used instead of the current design.
