  1. That's a good point. on Best Way To Store Digital Video For 20 Years? · · Score: -1

Yeah, I'm doing that and I'm afraid of being disconnected. There's little point of having cable internet if you can't share your files and little point of having files if you don't want to share them.

Too bad you got tagged "off topic" and then "troll" for noticing that ISPs are starting to make digital photos about as hard to share as the real ones in shoe boxes.

My backup is another hard drive. It made sense the first time and the second and the third for things like the photo album. A 500 GB portable drive has enough space for everything I want to preserve. Rsync keeps it all fresh and up to date. Offsite backup is a good idea. I still make DVD backups but they are still a last ditch thing to use. The archive I share is the one I care about.

If you strive to keep it all accessible all the time, you will move with format changes as they occur. US networks are not capable of HD video streaming, so I put OGG Theora in my video blogs with links to better quality for those who want it. Disk storage will improve in time to keep up with your vorracious demands. Raid would be good to have. Optical storage media that has to be loaded one disk at a time is a last ditch archive that you should keep in a seperate physical location, just in case.

First you have to eat the cost of Vista "business" or "ultimate" then you can pay another $50 to have XP installed on your "economy" laptop. If they offer Ubuntu on the same model it will be at least $200 cheaper. I know which I'd rather have.

What makes you think M$ can fix itself? They were unable to make Vista in 7 years, do you think they can make anything that works in the next 2 to 4? I don't.

XP did not exactly fly off the shelf or offer much over 98SE/W2k either and should be considered a stumble along with ME. Vista is more of the same that proves nothing changes in Redmond.

If you think you have trouble getting GNU/Linux to work on new hardware, just try XP. The situation will deteriorate more rapidly than usual thanks to vendor interest in GNU/Linux. Acer, Asus and others going the GNU/Linux route are going to drop XP like a hot potato.

A stock that's flat is one that's losing value to inflation. Don't try to tell me their dividends keep up with it. Buying M$ anytime in the last ten years has been like flushing money down the toilet, but it's worse for M$ because stock options were a significant part of employee compensation. They have lost the ability to offer that and are no longer able to attract tallent.

It's true that M$ is throwing its weight and money around Washington.

The question is if Enderele's mouth helps or hurts the soft. These kinds of statements are designed to manipulate people on Wall Street, but they are smarter than M$ thinks they are.

Those and 14 other nonprofit organizations sent a joint letter to the Justice Department on Friday asking for an antitrust investigation of the possible Google-Yahoo alliance

That's from the same paper that covered the spamming of Senators by a M$ PR firm against the anti-trust trail. You might also remember them claiming to represent blind people opposing ODF. That spamming fooled no one at the time, so you wonder why they keep trying to pull the same stupid trick.

It's taking time for the world to catch up with him, but people like Kroes are well on the way. It's a good idea to listen to people you don't agree with when they are obviously trying to do good things for you. It's also a good idea to take things with a grain of salt from convicted monopolists that talk about "one night stands" and pawn developers. Richard Stallman has taken a lot of heat for the things he's said but almost all of it has been correct. He'd be a much better person in authority than the real greed driven crackpots John McKain favors - Steve Ballmer and Carley Fiorina.
