  1. Re:Medical equipment on The Very Worst Uses of Windows · · Score: 0

Actually, this is true with ANY drivers for Windows. Microsoft tried to enforced this digitally approved and signed drivers by Microsoft so people wouldn't complain that stuff didn't work right. Well, you still can install unsigned and unapproved drivers, you'll just get a nag warning saying along the lines of, "If you use these drivers it may fuck up your system so don't blame Microsoft!". I remember Microsoft said they weren't going to allow any unsigned drivers to be installed on Vista. I guess after much debate Microsoft changed their minds. They probably figured if Microsoft is too slow in approving these drivers we'd bitching at them for being so. I've seen screen of death on most platforms from Windows 3.11 all the way through Vista. And some flavors of Linux. It's bound to happen once in awhile due to flaky drivers or some issues with the hardware. Shit happens, just don't bet your life on it.

When I reinstalled WinXP it wiped out the GRUB on the primary hard drive so wasn't able boot to Ubuntu anymore. Hmmm... conspiracy? Lucky I was able to reinstall GRUB to get it back and it wasn't fun getting it to work right. Had to use Super Grub Disk to fix it and good thing it did because I didn't feel like reinstalling Ubuntu again after I spent time customizing it.

  4. [SECURITY] [DSA 1605-1] DNS vulnerability impact o on Massive, Coordinated Patch To the DNS Released · · Score: 0

Debian Security Advisory DSA-1605-1 Package : glibc Vulnerability : DNS cache poisoning Problem type : remote Debian-specific: no CVE Id(s) : CVE-2008-1447 CERT advisory : VU#800113 Dan Kaminsky discovered that properties inherent to the DNS protocol lead to practical DNS spoofing and cache poisoning attacks. Among other things, successful attacks can lead to misdirected web traffic and email rerouting. At this time, it is not possible to implement the recommended countermeasures in the GNU libc stub resolver. The following workarounds are available: 1. Install a local BIND 9 resoler on the host, possibly in forward-only mode. BIND 9 will then use source port randomization when sending queries over the network. (Other caching resolvers can be used instead.) 2. Rely on IP address spoofing protection if available. Successful attacks must spoof the address of one of the resolvers, which may not be possible if the network is guarded properly against IP spoofing attacks (both from internal and external sources). This DSA will be updated when patches for hardening the stub resolver are available.

A fix should be available for them, as well as everyone else infected.

The problem is when you're dealing with for profit pharmaceutical companies, a "fix" is not in their best interest. Not many research dollars are going to be assigned to THAT. Keeping you alive and dependent on their overpriced medications is far more profitable. Don't hope for a "fix" for anything. Expect lifelong "treatments" instead.

They're just bad as tobacco companies for their nicotine addiction. Granted they need to find the cure and vaccine for it but the way it is now it's not gonna happen anytime soon. HIV is very real and people need to do everything they can to protect themselves. Seems lately people are being naive thinking it'll never happen to them and still continue to have unprotected sex with unknown partners. Rape and other situations are a separate issue altogether. I'm talking about deliberate acts of being stupid by not using protection. To me that's not an excuse. Protection isn't 100% effective but at least they should make an effort to prevent the spread of HIV.

I have to wonder by modifying the T-Cell will it screw up the immune system? Mutate it to do something else? I think the only true way to control HIV problem is through education and prevention. If people are stupid enough to have unprotected sex with an unknown partner then it's their problem. Also, this re-enforces the nature of being faithful in a relationship so stop screwing around people!!

  9. Don't bother with consumer routers for VOIP on Can Any Router Guarantee Bandwidth For VoIP? · · Score: 1

Bit-torrent is a HUGE resource hog and pretty much all consumer routers barely can keep up. Bit-torrent can generate hundreds up to several thousands of connections which fills up the iptables in the consumer router very quickly. There isn't enough memory or horsepower in a typical Linksys or D-Link router that can really keep up with it. Poor VOIP connections confirms this. Best bet is setup a Linux router using IPCOP (www.ipcop.org) and it's really easy to setup and configure. This way you can customize the hardware anyway you want to suit your needs. What's more you can easily add more features to it like OpenVPN. If IPCop isn't to your liking there are plenty of others out there. Take my word for it, you outgrew that Linksys router and no firmware will 100% fix it regardless of what people say. Good luck.

I've played WoW for about a month and quit simply because it's something you can't play for weeks without lagging behind your friends in-game. By the time you get back in-game your low level character can no longer be part of higher level characters' quests so it's a constant battle to keep up. To me it's not worth it.

I agree 100% which should be a standard practice as I too was doing the same thing whenever the PC or Laptop is being re-issued to a new user. Re-imaging the PC or Laptop is a sure way that NOTHING is left behind for the new user to find or being used against including confidential files left in My Documents or stray files in the C:\ drive (even though they have been told not to save anything to the C:\ drive other than My Documents) by the previous user. This also ensures the security and update tools work the way it should for the new users. So from reading the article it's the admin fault for not checking the SMS settings and anti-virus software to ensure they are working properly. Even after I ghosted the PCs I always make sure they work before issuing it to the new user. I don't think it's stupidity, I think it's laziness by the Admin's part for not doing his or her job.
