"..., computer source code, though unintelligible to many, is the preferred method of communication among computer programers."

Most people simply do not want to spend the effort to understand. And large companies like Mattel will do their best to bully the minority because they know that they can get away with it.

But maybe with persistence and good luck we may be fortunate enough to bring a bit of common sense back to our legal systems stance toward individual rights on the electronic frontier.

  15. Welcome to the melting pot on Social Changes & Internet Access In The Third World · · Score: 3

There will be some cultures that will be very hesitant to take to the internet. We have already seen resistance by some sects of the Jewish faith, and more recently there have been news articles referring to efforts in France to ban use of phrases such as "e-mail", due to a fear that it is watering down there language. Simply take a look at the level of control that China is trying to gain over its populace access to the internet.

But before we go forward and laugh at these groups and those that will surly follow, lets take a moment and look at their fears. Recent history is riddled with stories of cultures that have all but been removed from existence because they got in the way of "progress". In the United States alone we can point to the Native American's and the Inuit's. They have found that there is little to no room for their culture in our "modern" world.

I believe that many will see the internet in much the same way that the native inhabitants of the US saw the settlers. The fear is justified; over time the continuous exposure to dominant foreign cultures will likely erode many of the facets of other cultures that make them unique.

Is this bad? It has the promise of allowing more people to be able to hold a dialog to share ideas and philosophies on a scale that has never before been possible. Yet I have to admit that I can understand the sense of loss that a proud nation may feel as they discover that slowly cease to exist, one keystroke at a time.

We are on the verge of watching a decision made for us by a small group of people who lack the ability to understand the technology involved in the question, much less the ramifications of the final decision.

Hopefully our friends at the EFF can succeed in pulling us through this, by explaining this to a level that even the judges can understand [not a job that I envy]. In the mean time I would like to show my support by leaving up my mirror site.

I still remember the first time that I saw an Amiga [I believe that it was the A1000 model]. I was blown away! I was still playing around with a C64 and still enjoying every minute of it. That is until I saw the Amiga, at the local computer shop they had a floor model just cycling through a graphics display, and I was amazed, It was the most impressive thing that I had seen from a computer [and it was the better part of a decade before I saw anything that I felt matched that demonstration form the mid-eighties].

After that it was so hard to go back to my trusty old 64, but without the money to buy an Amiga I went back, and hoped that someday I could have a computer that was that cool. Although I was never fortunate to own an Amiga, I feel that for many people like myself it went along ways to show us what was possible.

I hope that this time the Amiga really does get an honest chance at making a return to the limelight. If they can successfully make a machine that is true to the original spirit, I would gladly wait in line to buy one.
