About a year ago, I made a career transition to software engineer and had just completed grad school for Comp Sci. I was 41. I had a phone screen for a job opening at a mobile apps company. The phone screen was overseen by an agency recruiter, who listened in on the whole conversation. The interviewer (a software architect) kept hammering me about my age. First, he flat out asked how old I was. When I told him my age, he said he was disappointed because he was looking for someone in their 20's. He then asked me why I thought he should hire me instead of someone in their 20's. I never had a chance to speak with the recruiter after the call. In an email, I told the recruiter that this seemed like age discrimination...I never got a reply from the recruiter. I spoke to a retired lawyer who was a friend of the family but, he seemed like an idiot...He said its only age discrimination if you are over 60, and then there's only a case if I could prove the company hired someone in their twenties to fill the position. Basically, I gave up after that and moved on. I eventually got a great job at another company doing exactly what I want to, but I still wonder if I ever had a case against the company that gave the phone screen.
I agree. Consult. But, what have you been doing during the last 3 years? If nothing, your career may be irretrievably dead. You have to stay on top of the latest technology, programming languages, frameworks and programming skill. You also need to maintain your professional contacts. If you did all this during the last 3 years, then there's hope for you as a private consultant. I've heard of people over 65 doing just that.
Sorry but I just don't feel any pity for Apple at all...not after the $1Billion law suit they brought against Samsung for patents on trivial things like rounded corners and icon grids. What goes around, comes around.
Okay, what about the notion that rape is what god intends? That the female body just shuts down in case of rape?
What about all the people who believe the earth is 6000 yrs old? that dinosaurs and man coexisted? and ignore science fact.
That evolution is "just a theory" with no evidence to support it?
That they insist on less government EXCEPT when it comes to enforcing their moral beliefs and dogma on everyone else?
(ie, caring for the poor/disadvantaged/discriminated against). As it's a quality that I've personally always recognized as the fatal flaw of Liberal Ideology
The best way to experience empathy is by personally going through the hardships that others have been through, in which case, you will understand their pain. Don't think it can't happen to you. I was poor a few years ago, largely because of outsourcing and the state of the economy. There was really nothing I did (or neglected to do) that put me in that situation. I had to bust my ass to climb out of it and return to financial stability and independence.
So, what's wrong with having empathy? I strive to be balanced. I empathetic. I'm also analytical...and you'd be hard pressed to argue against that, knowing that I'm a successful electrical engineer and software developer. I really don't understand how you can call empathy a weakness but, if you enjoy being a robot who doesn't get laid, knock yourself out.
Tell you what...if a school were to open its "after hours" to other religious groups (not just Christian) then I might feel better about it. That means that the school would have to have at least a few religious groups, such as Hindi, Muslim, Buddhist, Greek Mythology, etc with no one group being a overwhelming majority. However, I suspect the courts do not intend for this.
Nope, I'm not missing a thing. My point is, the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment says the nation is based, in part, on separation of church and state. It Says "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion". Furthermore, Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists further elaborates on the meaning of the Establishment Clause by saying that there is a "wall of separation between church and state". Since PUBLIC schools are government run, the Establishment Clause applies. This after-hours thing is simply a loophole, allowing religion to circumvent the Constitution, and I am uneasy about that. There is no reason to have this after-hours thing. Religions already have their parochial schools where they can teach anything they want.
and the Easter Bunny was not on US coins until the 1860's. It was not on paper money until 1954, through an act of congress. "Under Easter Bunny" was not in the original Pledge of Allegiance and was not added until 1954. The US Constitution has no mention of the Easter Bunny, except in the date, which was how everyone wrote the date back then. Its funny how conservative Christians say America is a Christian nation when most evidence points to the contrary.
"constitutional separation of church and state"
Just Google "Letter to Danbury Baptists" that Thomas Jefferson wrote. This founding father quoted and made specific mention of the Establishment clause in his letter and added that it is intended as "a wall of separation" between church and state. Also, if you take into account the context of Jefferson's letter, the meaning is plain.
Which God is that? The God of Abraham, Zeus, Odin, Rah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster? You are talking about a personal god... but, perhaps "God" is an entity or thing of which we are no consequence or significance to...something that simply IS but is not omnipotent, not all-knowing, not all-seeing, not caring, etc. I see no evidence proving or disproving one way or the other.
Well, if a religious organization is allowed to come into public schools to teach "after the 3'oclock bell rings", then I think secularists should be allowed to come to churches after mass and preach their philosophy. Maybe hand out free copies of the Jefferson Bible and Darwin's Origin Of Species , too. That would be funny.
To get an idea just how intense and thorough religious indoctrination of children can be, watch two movies: Jesus Camp... and... Friends Of God (HBO Documentary). Both are on Youtube. These movies show disturbing footage.
Read Leviticus for about 3 seconds. You will find a cornucopia of examples of G-d explaining who to throw rocks at.
people who eat shellfish,
people who eat pork,
homosexuals,
people who are crippled or disfigured,
children who curse their parents,
couples who have sex while the woman is ovulating...
I'm sure there are others I missed.
No. It obviously has several caveats but it could offer some potential advantages, which I mentioned in another message. I'm simply playing devil's advocate.

You could consider being a consultant but, you've been out for 3 years and that could be a problem.
I just know that I have bad vision in one eye...and that I miss out for 3D movies.

What about certain corporations that know all about us? Arguably, they know more than the government.
I guess depth perception is overrated.
time to wear your camouflage pajamas.
Cool. Now if there's some way to get Spirit, Opportunity and Pathfinder together, it can take a group photo and send a postcard to Earth.
I think you replied to the wrong message, dude.
Really? I've never seen any evidence of that.

9/11 truthers...libertarians. What do psychics and homeopathy have to do with conspiracies?
vaccine alarmists are usually libertarians
Most religious conservatives are NOT analytical thinkers. The same is true of conspiracy nuts (ex: birthers). The majority of both are Republicans.

Everybody knows God exists

"Several news sites are reporting that the 1962 replica of the HMS bounty was lost at sea due to hurricane Sandy, about 90 miles off North Carolina."
Are they certain this wasn't the result of a mutiny?
