but we are deluding outselves if we think legal bittorrent usage is the majority of bittorrent traffic, or even a large portion of it. I get that extreme statements like this are necessary to balance out the extreme statements made by the other side (that song you downloaded cost us 500 million, etc..):(
Do you have statistics from sources you can cite to back up your claim?
Wow. Some douche-bag modded my comment down one point. Hello!? This is Slash DOT...It is not some political blog. Would you care to explain yourself, Mister Minus-One mod-der?
or is Slashdot posting this garbage in a desperate effort to recruit more readers?
Like the History Channel, which no longer has shows about actual history and instead has "Ancient Aliens", "Swamp People", "Ice Road Truckers", "Axe Men" and other such crap?
Yes, this is a very sad day, indeed. I too have fond memories of building Heathkit products. This has been the trend with electronics/science hobby-shops over the last two decades. Remember back when Radio Shack specialized in hobby kits, RC toys and electronics components?...Now all they do is whore out mobile phones and small, cheap electronics appliances.
My understanding is that the missile system IS for our defense. The idea is to place the defenses closer to the origin of the missiles, so they have more time to react and can destroy them further from populated areas. (like over the Atlantic maybe?)
It also opens up options like using fast, guided micro-missiles that tail their target for an easy hit at low relative speeds, instead of something that has to be pinpoint precise and catch the target head-on at high relative speeds.
Why not adapt a missle defense system to our current fleet of submarines...or if not feasible, create a new class of submarines to meet the requirements. As long as we aren't using kinetic energy weapons or lasers, it should be do-able.
Anyone remember the original Everquest? It was fun, unless you lost connection or server crashed while you were on the boat in the middle of the ocean. Then you drowned.
I was wondering the same thing. I know people here like to cast "The Man" in the worst possible light, but are they really just bitching that the FBI didn't jump up and down and wave their arms so that people would know that the server was back?
The threats continued after the server seizure. So one might expect the FBI to return the server with a courteous "Sorry, my bad" apology, maybe.
It's an offensive slang term for handicapped people. And it speaks volumes about the marketing ability of geeks.
It can be called "BiSexualLameRetardFishFrog Raster Graphics Editor" for all I care. Its a free suitable alternative to Adobe Photoshop and that's all that matters to a casual user like me.
Yes, we need to get rid of lobbyists, but the phenomenon you speak of is a different animal. If lobbying were illegal, then she would have received some other cushy job at NBC Universal. This whole "screw over the voters/taxpayers for Acme Corp, then get a cushy job with Acme Corp" routine happens in just about every part of the government, even the military.
What we need to do is make it illegal for any high-ranking government employee to get a job with any corporation that is regulated by or a contractor for that employee's position. Generals can't get jobs with military contractors, FTC execs can't get jobs with Wall Street firms, FAA execs can't get jobs with airlines, etc., etc.
I know what I am proposing sounds draconian, but this tactic has an incredibly corrupting influence over government, and this is the only thing I can think of to put an absolute stop to it. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm more than willing to listen.
Sounds reasonable but it will never get voted through.
Personally, I'm for getting rid of all lobbyists period but, there should, at least, be a conflict of interest gap, say 10 years, between being a government official or elected representative and being able to work for the organizations you had dealings with while you held that position.
I like your idea but congress and the senate would never approve such a bill.
I just want them to protect the playing field and make sure that the rules apply evenly.
The government does not need to make us all the same. Just give us all the same chance.
"If apple's business doesnt suit you, dont buy, simple as that."
No problem. Done and done.
No, they are not a monopoly (yet) but they are trying very hard to be with their walled garden approach and lawsuits
Analysis of your conclusion: You are a deluded idiot, continually suprised by for profit businesses seeking profit, which you equate with them being 'bastards'. Your delusion give a pass to Dropbox, presumably because they are 'the little guy', despite their acting in contravention of Apple's quite clear rules about in app purchases.
Sounds like another "Apple (Can do no wrong)" fan-boy is in our midst.
Meredith Attwell Baker. Four months after approving the deal, she was hired to serve as senior vice president for government affairs for the Comcast-controlled NBC Universal. In other words, after approving the deal, she left the FCC to become one of Comcast's top lobbyists. I say get rid of all corporate lobbyists in Washington. They don't belong there.
It was illegal until...if I recall correctly, the FCC commissioner approved it. Then, only a few months later, the commissioner resigned to take a high-paying top level exec job at Comcast. Its obvious what happened but unfortunately, this form of bribery is also legal so long as it can't be proven. Back on topic...these discriminatory data caps obviously do not promote competition in business...One could hardly call this capitalism.
Your last post provided enough information to convince me you are an Apple fan-girl. With all the hate you have for Linux, its ironic...What do you think OSX is under the hood? Okay, its not Linux but I'll give you a hint...Its something very similar.
As for Android and updates, that's an issue with phone manufacturers, not the OS. Some manufacturers are good about updates, some aren't. My Galaxy Nexus runs Ice Cream Sandwitch. I've had the phone for 3 months and already had one minor update. BTW, from a software engineer's perspective, writing apps for Android is way easier than for IOS. I can write an Android app on any platform I want (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD)...I can even write it ON AN Android tablet or phone, and side-loading is easy. Not so with IOS...Its XCode on a MacBook or nothing and side-loading is a bit tricky when there's no USB. Also, there are some things an I-Phone can never do, like tether to your PC. Also, despite I-Phone being a walled-garden with the I-tunes store, Its still had a huge share of exploits, vulnerabilities and malware.
I haven't tried a new Windows phone yet but I've seen videos of the Metro interface, which will showcase in the Windows 8 desktop/laptop operating system. I think its ugly and unimpressive but that's my opinion. I don't see why Woz is ecstatic about it.
Okay so you threw in the towel on linux in favor of...an outdated version of Windows that, given ~18 months, will no longer have any support or receive any updates. Well, whatever floats your boat. I've been using different distros of linux for 12 years. During more than half that time, linux has been my primary OS. In fact, I have a laptop that dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows Vista. Vista is an abortion so, all the more reason I enjoy linux. At work, I have Windows 7 and am forced to use MS Office 2007...I hate and can't get used to Ribbon so I prefer using LibreOffice. I've seen previews of Windows 8 and I think Metro sucks. Apple computers have nice hardware and a very polished UI but that doesn't excuse the outrageous cost...Also, I don't like Apple's walled garden approach to everything it sells...Also, to put it mildly, I'm not really into the whole culture of Apple fan-dom. So there you have it. i'm sticking with linux at home.
Just because Apple didn't help change your living room does't mean it didn't change a lot of others'. Between Apple and Netflix the cable company lost my business. And I'm not the only one.
Apple and Netflix?
Really!? First of all, I recently came back to Netflix for a membership...then I left one month later. Netflix now has a pitiful selection of movies in streaming video. Also, now you have to sign up separately and pay double just to watch DVDs. I'm convinced Netflix will go the way of the Dodo within the next two years, if that long.

How is this even remotely SlashDot newsworthy?

Includes all-wheel drive and a boxer-engine.
So, does this mean dogs will have verbal translation collars, like in the movie UP! "Squirrel!!"
How do you say "Big Brother" in arabic?
Here is your mission should you choose to accept it. ....
This iphone will self-destruct in 10 seconds. Have a nice day.
