  1. total bullshit on Do Digital Photos Endanger History? · · Score: 1

as all analog based media are being converted to digital format exactly for the sake of preservation, this disseration sounds like a total bullshit to me. but then of course there are still people who claim that LPs have a greater dynamic range than CDs, so this whole 'analog vs digital' is not technical but a religious issue.

  4. who should really be overwhelmed with a feeling... on Interim Response from Philip Zimmermann · · Score: 2, Interesting

not sure about Zimmerman, but here is a brief list of those who should be overwhelmed with a feeling of guilt:

    1. Those responsible for making the american foreign policy. Seems like we are fighting with monsters we've created in a first place (bin Laden and Saddam Hussein). Clearly this policy has no long-term strategic goals.

    2. CIA and FBI. I'm not going to comment a lot on this item.

    3. Those responsible for Airtravel security. Airport facilities at Logan are complitely inadequate. Apparently the rules of engagements with hijackers aren't adequate either. What amazes me is that the possibility of such events was considered a long time ago, and yet the old outdated rules were kept in place.

Now suddenly cryptography and Zimmerman are scapegoats. Give me a break.

  8. we need open word-processing standards on ZDNet Reviews KOffice · · Score: 1

As long as there is an issue of compatibility with MS, all non-MS word-processing packages will be inferior (by definition, if you wish). We need to define some open word-processing and spreadsheet standards and start relying on them. I know it is a chicken and an egg situation, but you have to start somewhere, haven't you? Semething HTML-based probably. So format compatibility should never be an issue. Only GUI, how user friendly is this.

  9. Re:Mainframes suck on Exchange vs. Linux/390 Comparison · · Score: 1

Let me elaborate on this point - as a former VM programmer. Mainframes are certainly not designed for number crunching or graphics. what they are good for is a mix of data intensive and cpu intensive load. mainframe architecture is such that all data-related activites are completely offloaded into the 'channels'. so once data transfer is requested, cpu simply sends the command SIO (start io) to channel and does something else while data are being moved. Now most of the commercial application do give such a mix of data intensive and cpu intensive load, so mainframe is alive and kicking.

On a related note, VM overhead is minimal (most of the logic is in a microcode) so overhead from runing VM and switching from one virtual machine (with a single copy of Linux) to another one is also trivial.

once I was working on network performance monitor (written in C). Once I had a 'basic proof of concept' (quick and dirty, but mostly functional), I've told the interested parties I would have to re-write it so it would be modular, easy to read and understand and of course easy to debug. To my surprise those jerks gave me a hard time (noone gives a shit about your 'aesthetical feelings'). Well I did make some minimal changes and left the company soon after that. Hope someone is still struggling maintaining the code. The bottom line is that 'inner beauty' of any software is not a luxory item.
