    You forgot primer detonation.

    To be more specific, the sound from item 1 is generated when the gases created by the burning powder creates a pressure wave in the ambient air. The "silencer" diminishes this sound by slowing the gases and reducing the impact of the pressure wave.

    Which is the better biological explanation for a belief in God evolutionary adaptation or neurological accident?

    Assuming of course that there is no God, belief in God provides an evolutionary advantage. Beings who believe that their actions will reflect upon them later are more likely to make selfless contributions, up to and including death, to protect their larger group.

    Throughout history, how many times have entire villages(or other small groups) been saved because one individual faced certain death because he or she believed that God would reward them for the sacrifice?

    In the late 90s I spent some time working at a small OEM. They got windows CDs and COAs from otherwise reputable suppliers who knew they were bogus and the store did too.

    Win98SE bootlegs were good looking, but the trained eye could spot them in a second.

    This store supported customers in the event that their bootlegs ended up being bad, many did not. It was because of this rampant and out in the open piracy that M$ had to do something, WGA is their best guess.

    All major brand-name computers come with a ton of crapware pre-installed. Why do you think they do that? Because they get PAID to put in there. When you eliminate Windows, you also eliminate the extra revenue from pre-installed crapware.

    Does Dell make more money from the crapware than they pay to Microsoft?

    Way to spectacularly miss my point. Trying to mainstream linux means answering all of these tiresome questions hundreds of thousands of times.

    You completely overlook the real *long-term* advantages of using an OS and a packaging system that is actually maintainable.

    It's not about that for most people. The sooner you get that through your head, the better off you'll be. Joe Sixpack doesn't care about anything other than "How easy is it for me to 'Do X'?"

    For the forseeable future, Windows is going to win that contest.

    Maybe this makes me a heretic, but I don't think that Linux should ever try to become a mainstream user OS. A part of the allure of linux is that it is hard. The learning curve makes users feel like they've achieved something by becoming proficient.

    If you made a distro, how would you prefer to spend your time? Would you rather deal with "XYZ_lib_devel is out of date, we need a package for the new version." or "How do I get AIM, ICQ and Yahoo messenger to work?", "WTF is this GIMP thing? Is it like pulp fiction?" and "How do I install MS Office on this"?

    Perhaps they considered a meeting from 8 years ago about the zero-tolerance policy to be a previous warning.

    How about enforcing laws on the books to make sure that only licensed gun owners can purchase guns rather than passing new and pointlessly restrictive laws?

    Where I live, you don't need a license to purchase a firearm. As long as you can pass a background check, you can buy a firearm.

    If licensing is a requirement, all the government needs to do is stop issuing licenses.

    I'm one of the "linux guys" so I was involved in our own internal evaulations of the DST issue.

    Basically, what it boils down to is widespread minor problems. It's not like Y2K where things are supposed to just blow up and the world ends. Time sensitive apps will be out of sync for a month if the patches are not done. There is a real problem with older versions of Java. Recent versions have zoneinfo files that can be updates, but old versions of java handle time zone conversions internally and there are no zoneinfo files to fix.

    This is only an issue if you're not a person of color.

    It gets old rather quickly when none of the central, important or complex characters in any video game look like you.

    It's quite annoying and frustrating when you're rendered invisible. "They didn't make any black characters in Game X because the developers never thought about it." Yeah, that's the point.

    The Democrats have a majority in Congress, even a slim majority is enough to get things done. The Presidential podium is called the bully pulpit for a reason. A President can announce a shift in policy and someone in congress will introduce his pet legislation.

    So tell me - do you have any idea what your congressman's position is on guns? Your senators'?

    Yes. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey are my senators. Casey is pro second amendment, Specter's position changes with the political winds.

    No for most public companies its going to be cheaper to bow to M$ extortion, hint M$ will customize their demands so that is the case, then to fight them. Its no surpise at all M$ can basically shake down corporate FOSS users. Until the patent/copyright situation is really resolved and sadly I don't think the SCO case is going to fully resolve it, especially the patent side, M$ can bully anyone they want.

    M$ can't bully Uncle Sam. If they are extorting companies, I'm sure that their legal counsel is secretly complaining to the DOJ.

    If they had siphoned that money into clean energy and away from oil dependence, one could easily argue that it removes many of the reasons that the US went into Iraq in the first place.

    This dumb-ass statement tells me that you are neither black nor female.

    History has shown us that ~90% of black Americans vote democrat in presidential elections. So, if Obama gets the nomination, I'm sure that this will not change. It's possible that because of Bush's inroads into the black voting pool and the fact that Obama's blackness comes from Africa and not from an black American father, he may get less than the traditional 90%.

    Women are as polarized about Hillary as are men.

    Liberals love her, conservatives hate her and moderates (true moderates) are split about her.

    Yes, it is added in places like Brazil, but that's because they derive it from sugar and not corn like the US would have to.

    Not only has it added, but it has seriously reduced their dependance on foreign oil. Instead of getting 80% of their oil from foreign sources, they currently only get 15%. I don't have a link to this because I saw it on Modern Marvels.

    I am an environmentalist, but ethanol is a BAD BAD idea.

    Then, you're a stupid environmentalist. Ethanol is carbon neutral, the CO2 released by burning it is equal to the CO2 that would have been released by the decomposition or digestion of the plants that it is made from.

    Because of the variance of climates in the US we can't use pure ethanol. Ethanol requires a higher ignition temp than gasoline, and in cold climates it can't be used.

    Ethanol isn't a panacea, but it's something that can be used to help.
