But, they've gone more and more to things like PCI and AT disk drives lately, which mitigates that to a large part.
Lately? Maybe that's a matter of perspective. Apple has been making machines with ATA/IDE hard drives for over a decade, and PCI machines for almost as long.
Of course, do what you will, but keeping kids in a little black box until they're 18 is a great way to not only piss them off, but keep them socially inept for a good long time.
I'm sure that many of you out there share this experience, when I was a freshman at college the biggest whores were the chicks who were kept on a short leash when they were young.
Parents who are too domineering will create children who cut loose as soon as they are out of their parents' sight.
a divisive area of study that has become a presidential campaign issue.
So, it's "between a woman and her doctor" if she wants to kill her child and the government shouldn't get involved, but it's perfectly fine to legislate the source of a child that she wants to give birth to?
Global warming deniers at this point are in the same class as creationists, Holocaust-deniers, and flat-earthers -- it's not that they're being dismissed out of hand, it's that their arguments have been proven wrong time and time again, to the point that there's really no point in continuing the argument, and yet they just keep going.
Interesting examples. Let's take a look at them.
You can't prove creationists wrong. If you can't prove or disprove the existance of the supreme being you also can't prove or disprove that a process was controlled by that being.
But it's in a different catagory than the others because it's not possible to prove either way.
"Holocaust-deniers", or more accurately Holocaust revisionists have a couple of things on their side. First, the Nazis were so thorough in disposing of the bodies it's hard to find remains to get a truly accurate estimate of the number of victims. Another question that they raise but can't be answered is "Where did the Nazis get enough fuel to cremate 12 million people"? They were using nearly all of their resources to fuel the war machine. The conventional wisdom is that all questions of doubt regarding the holocaust have been resolved. They have not. It's just that people are afraid to publicly admit that some of the doubts haven't been resolved because the worst label you can get is "antisemite". That's the club used to beat people into silence.
I believe that the holocaust happened. Primarily because I have known survivors, widows and orphans of the holocaust. Once, I saw a woman in her 90s cry like a baby because she had a flashback and thought that "Hitler is coming for me!". Because I do believe it happened, I also believe that we should be trying to answer the unanswered questions instead of pretending that they don't exist or have no merit.
Global warming disbelievers have some interesting questions as well. I vividly remember a cartoon from Omni magazine from the early 1990s. It was a homeless man standing in snow up to his chest. He was holding a sign that said "Former global warming theorist." This was in the days before "The Day After Tomorrow", the brutal winters of 1993 and 1994 should have laid their panic mongering to rest; but fanatics don't need proof. They have belief! Now, they say that global warming will cause ice storms. The environmental Chicken Littles have been altering their beliefs for longer than I've been alive. Before I was born they were talking about "Global Cooling", when I was young the big disaster on the horizon was "Nuclear Winter", then I was a teenager it was "Global Warming" that was going to kill us, now CO2 buildup is going to heat up the atmosphere and cause an unspecified global catastrophe. I call bullshit. This planet has been here for roughly four billion years. It's awfully self-important to think that we have caused irreparable damage to it in the 150 or so odd years that we've been involved in heavy industry.
Why? Because you choose to only believe in one of the possible scenarios?
The scientific evidence that humans are affecting the climate with CO2 is as clear as day, and scientists who say otherwise are hired by special interest groups or oil companies.
That doesn't mean that their data is any less plausable.
It's a given that there is more CO2 in the atmosphere now than there was 20k years ago. What's not a given is the source of that CO2. It could be caused by the burning of fossil fuels. It also could be getting released from glaciers(MUCH less likely, but possible).
That article is true when it says that the effects we will have on climate aren't fully known, but the connection is there in a strong way. All of the research I have read suggests the link. We NEED to be concerned.
Sure, we should be concerned but the Chicken Little act that the greenies are performing doesn't help the cause.
Only because the Republicans beat them to the punch. Don't, even for one minute, think that the Democrats wouldn't have done it if they had the chance.
today you can buy the (delicious) imac g5 with the 17'' tft screen for $1300 -- and you get a 64-bit machine. An athlon64 with similar specs doesn't cost much lower, and you don't get the all-in-one design.
I don't want the all-in-one design. I have a perfectly good fleet of 17" monitors right now and don't want to pay for the new built in one of the iMac.
I guess it's the rose colored glasses. Every Apple shotcoming is an advantage to some people.
Process servers, employers and significant others already use Google for theses purposes... why not cops?
Because police are stupid. We have judges and courts because all throughout history we can see that the people who enforce the laws are not able to do so without oversight.
Are we talking about the same 15 years? Where Mac OS had cooperative multitasking?!
Yes, and Apple also had on-board SCSI, built in networking, 3.5" Floppy drives when everyone else still had 5.25" drives, they were never constrained to 640k of memory. No need for XMS, EMS, or "conventional memory", it was all just memory to the Mac OS.
Remember, until WinNT, Microsoft was using cooperative multitasking as well. ME's task scheduler was a lot better than the one in 95 but it was still cooperative as well.
In the end, Apple has developed a very strong platform.
Anyone that's USED one in the past 15 years will tell you that. There's no question that Apple has some good technology in their arsenal. The question is "Is Apple right for you?". For me it used to be, but now it's not.
There's no need to make it any more complicated than it needs to be.
Nobody's exactly sure why or how the FBI got warrants to take Indymedia's HDs, but their speculation tends to center around the fact that the Feds were spooked by the fact that Indymedia was able to publish RNC delegate names. This unfortuantely means political motivations are going to be questioned no matter what reasoning is brought forward.
Then again, ever since being unknowingly exposed to (seriously) almost every single STD on that list including HIV due to a cheating spouse (who knew the other woman was infected) I've got very little pity for the people who go around fucking whomever despite knowing the risks
Audi went ahead and made the stupid move to put more distance between the gas pedal and the brake pedal for the idiots over here in the US that have fat asses and feet.
It was a bit more complicated than that. The "hump" for the transmission was larger than the one on most cars, as a result, the pedals had to be moved to the left. But, the steering wheel was in the same place as with any other car. Most drivers center themselves using the steering wheel as a reference point. The older Audi 5000s had the gas pedal in the same place that most other cars put the brake pedal. In an emergency people look for the brake pedal "where it's supposed to be" and in that car they were hitting the gas instead.
Some of these questions are political, such as positions on nuclear weapons development.
From a pure science standpoint, it's a no brainer. Research that could lead to new nuclear weapons could also result in new methods to make new artificial elements.
Only when you involve politics does it get complicated.
A Segway traveling at 60-70 mph would be quite interesting to see.
And three miles later you get to see the twisted mangled body of the poor sap who happened to run over a piece of some Semi's blown tire.
