...If I want to do something challenging and complicated and creative, I'll go write code. I find this entertaining AND the end result could be useful, and I learn skills along the way....
Yes, I know what you mean. But... not everyone has a job where they can build things that are useful. At least not visibly so, to them. And learning about building useful stuff is a Good Thing.
Besides, even I want to build something different once in a while...
... Honestly given the number of drunk idiots on the road, combined with the number of people who can't even drive properly when they are sober let alone inebriated (anyone who claims they aren't impaired at 0.08 is kidding themselves), I'm surprised people don't support this measure more.
There is a mistake here. The government is not empowered to protect citizens, much as many in law enforcement would like to. The government is not there to protect you. They are there to arrest the criminals, after you have been attacked. You are responsible for protecting yourself.
A state where the police protect everyone all of the time, is called a "police state". It is generally agreed that no one really wants to live in a police state.
... The post to which you replied is a nice example of what we call "sarcasm".
Never use sarcasm in an internet post. Half the readers will take it seriously and think you are a dunce. Out of the rest, the trolls will have a "field day".
How likely is one to puncture the gas tank though, and how much risk of fire is there if the gas tank is ruptured, compared to if a battery is ruptured? Don't get me wrong, I really like the idea of electric vehicles and have mulled doing a conversion on my quarter-ton pickup, but I don't like the idea of high-centering on a foreign object causing a fire.
It's probably about the same, maybe even less. Gasoline is extremely dangerous. It doesn't light off if just punctured, but the vapor from the leak can go down wind a ways and light off from any spark or open flame. Even static sparks can set it off. And if the concentration is just right it can explode like a bomb (not the liquid, but the vapor). See "fuel-air bomb". The Navy bans use of gasoline on any small boat, all their small boats on the ships are diesel.
The objection was because state run shops were selling the same models for 1/5th the price or less. Since those shops would have taken payment in the local currency and had to buy in the sets with USD or Yen it is hard to see how such a high profit margin could be justified...
It's probably like Russia was, in the USSR. The state stores have empty shelves, they don't really sell much.
Governments have no Morality, only people can have Morality.
The Government is not your parents, much as some people spend their lives looking for replacement parents. It is more like the slave master, willing to take care of you for your whole life because they own you.
Governments are necessary to keep criminals away (including criminal governments), but it is like keeping a dog in the back yard to ward off robbers. You don't want the dog ruling the house.
You need a revolution periodically. Democracy with elections is a way of having a revolution without killing a lot of people.
Don't trust anyone who says they want to "take care of you" !
Dude, This is fucking America. We have never, ever all agreed on anything.... OTOH the problem with cutting government spending is that it involves firing people, which reduces salaries for everyone by increasing the supply of available labor while reducing the demand for said labor...
Um... Not everyone works for the government! (Even though some wish that were true, so they could control it all !) Government takes a cut off of the top, so money in the private sector makes more jobs. And no, the "rich" don't take more than the government. Also, the printing of the dollar bills does not mean the government owns all of the money. The economy is based on the laws of thermodynamics, and that is not subject to human laws.
... but I seem to remember that either Verhoeven or Neumeier (perhaps both?) had said publicly that he hadn't read the novel and didn't really know what it was about.
That figures, considering the movie. 8-/ It's like the movie "Space Balls" had been named "Star Wars 2". Do you think people might have thought it was a bit of a fraud ?? Indeed.
The adjustments are not discrete actions, except when done by a computer. Compare it to riding a bicycle, the control must be continuous and by reflex. In other words, much faster than normal reaction time. 500 per minute is very slow in comparison, the computers are barely able to keep up (or were at that time). But the fly by wire does help a lot on long flights, because that kind of continuous control can be fatiguing and dangerous. Normal aircraft do not require that of continuous correction. Note that the people that wrote the reports were computer types and salesmen, not pilots.
Even being the spine-less Liberal that I am, I can read the book and understand how / why someone might believe things should be arranged this way...
Wow, a Liberal who can make a reasoned argument ! After the recent election here in Virginia, that's quite refreashing. In fact, it actually gives me some hope for the world... (no kidding)
I saw the movie "Starsip Troopers" when it first came out. And I read the book first. There is only a slight similarity between them. The people that worked on the movie sabotaged it, because they hated Heinlein so much that they could not do it "straight". They missed almost all of what he was saying, if you read the book you can see that. At least, you can if you were ever in any kind of militay or rescue organization. He was not a "war monger", but neither was he a hater of the military. His experiance was in World War II, maybe it is different now...
I think it was not so much that they couldn't, but that it had to be flown every instant continuosly. Like balancing a broom, upside down, on your outstretched hand. That gets very tiring, and can cause mistakes in emergency situations. But beware of anyone who uses the word "can't" or "would never". People flew helecopters a long time before autopilots, and they have no natural stability at all.
This. Not only that, this is a clear case where he SHOULD be, if not arrested, at least fined heavily. This is clear cut reckless driving; speed limits are posted to keep the public safe. Stunts like this should not be pulled at the potential expense of other drivers on the road. We're all beholden to the same laws, whether you're trying to break a record or not.
Speed, by it's self, is not necessarily dangerous. It depends on the surroundings. After all, the space station goes a whole lot faster and hasn't hit anything in a long time...
... The modern generation of stealth fighters and bombers such as the B-2 are literally impossible to fly by a mere human.
They said that about helicopters, a long time ago before they had fly-by-wire. Even hobby RC-pilots could learn to fly them, and that was before the "smart" toys they have now. (But that doesn't mean it was easy...)

SQL is an acronym for IBM Structured Query Language. As such it should be spoken as the three letters. The salesmen did not start using other names until much later, for specific products.
But, people often substitute words for acronyms, because they are easier to say. I don't think three letters is bad, but call it what you want.
Just make sure you are using the term that your audiance will understand...

Maybe there is something about the patent that we don't know about. What about it makes it different from prior common methods?
On what grounds would a "reasonable patent system" exclude it? It hasn't been shown to be anticipated or obvious in view of prior art, in spite of all of the efforts that have been thrown at it, so those wouldn't be reasonable grounds...
Because we were using the functionality for years before that. Just because there is no prior patent, does not mean that there is no prior art.

The universe does not change or split, instead the experimenter is propelled into a nearby universe.
Think of an experimenter in a rowboat, next to a large ship. If they reach out and push the ship, which one do you think is going to visibly move?
I believe it is called "Ender's Game".
Um... Not exactly. 8-}
