That makes NO sense. For example, finding qualified people who know Siebel is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, yet our company just spent $110 million on Siebel (what a piece of crap), plus they have 3 Siebel consultants raking them over the coals. Siebel is a LOT more obscure than Linux!

it's funny...I'm the IT Director at my company, and the UNIX admin as well. People notice I don't do much..when they ask why, it's pretty much because UNIX runs perfectly. We have 24 IBM S-80's (AIX) running loads of shit. We have our worldwide printing queue running on a Pentium 200 running Linux (That's to print our Purchase Orders thru Oracle). Everything else runs on Linux. Except the Intranet and Lotus Notes which our MCSE set up. He's always fixing the Win boxes. He works his cajones off.
I'm the only one here who even knows what Linux is and because of me Linux is being pushed more and more. When the NT guy mentions a problem, I will sometimes say "Linux can solve that easily", he skulks away in shame, saying "NT is my job". Then I say, "What's stopping you from re-educating yourself?"

Sure, they might have it in PC World, or maybe the Technology section of the Times, but my MOTHER does not read these things. Only us geeks in the industry know ( we are a small percentage of the population).
Microsoft will fix this to appease the security experts, but that's about it.
As long as Joe Sixpack can stay happily ignorant, MS is happy. For example, one of my friends, a very intelligent Nuclear Physicist, just got suckered in to a CompUSA MegaPC w/ 1.2 GHZ, 1 GB RAM , DVD RAM and Windows XP for anout 5 Grand. He browses the web PERFECTLY fine on his 988 MHZ PC. He said the "pretty colors" of XP sold him. I told him of the security flaws and reasons for not going with XP (never mind the absolute non-necessity of the PC), and his response was "How come I haven't heard about these things you talk about?" I had no answer. That's how Microsoft stays in power. If we step outside the industry for a minute, we can see that Linux means nothing to most people, AOL IS the internet, and Windows IS a computer. How do we fix this? I don't know, but someone must.

What made people make the switch? I used my Commie 128 until 1992, when I found Linux. It never made sense to me. He's paid for his knowledge and technical expertise and for ALWAYS saving our ass. Some of our programmers prefer to work at the office. They say home has too many distractions. That's fine. I say "Only you know how you work best". I never care how a task is done. You can go home and pay your COUSIN to do the work. As long as I get the final product..I'm happy. Isn't that what it's all about? Results? That's why I have the best team. Everyone's happy. Sick days and personal days are just "symbols". There is no set schedule. 85% of our programmers work at 4 AM. Why make them bend to the 8:30-5:30 way of life when they are not as productive?
