    Siebel is about as useful as tits on a bull. I happen to see it everywhere. I've always wondered what exact PURPOSE it server. My company got something called ClearWorld(I think) that allows Siebel to talk to Oracle! A separate $300,000 package just so The gross software that is siebel can talk to a standard database. (Never mind we have DB2 as well!) But thats another story

    The guys who are MCSEs and FrontPage Monkeys will be out of work for a LONG time. It seems the trend here in NYC is towards the UNIX/Linux world (seriously).
    Since there are over 300,000 MCSEs here, and the companies that want them are disappearing, they need a new skill set.
    There was always a minority of *NIX people, and THEY are the ones who can still be picky about the pay/job they want.
    Since the financial industry is a UNIX world, AIX and HP/UX guys are in HIGH demand.
    At the job I got a month ago, they were looking for a good UNIX admin for 10 months before they hired me! That's why their infrastructure in in such a state of disarray.
    They hired me on the spot and wanted me to start same day. I am not even the best UNIX admin out there. (I still can't get the UNIX printing system :))

    The market is flooded with Java guys from India who will work for less (Nothing against the East Indians..I'm just stating fact)
    I now lead a department. Out of 100 in the department, 97 are from India/Pakistan.
    They had NO trouble finding a job.
    They all have UNIX skills, DB2 or Oracle and they all have Siebel skills.

    I use IBM Java VM (It's on IBM's site somewhere...look under developers)
    I notice it's faster on Linux than Sun's, but it's still slow. We use IBM WebSphere at work (Java Servlet Server), and IT is written in Java...Takes at least 5 minutes to START the damn thing on a dual 64-bit CPU IBM RS/6000 AIX Server.
    It's true, servlets ARE quick as a whip, once they are compiled the first time.

    And no one gave a crap when we formed in 1995. We are Out of Business now, but we were 100% Linux (a couple of freeBSD servers too) until Oct 2000.
    My MOTHER uses Linux (Corel) and was happy that she can leave it running for days and no glitches.
    My fiance uses Linux (she prefers mandrake) and i have now set her up with a Diskless PC using our network. She had ZERO problems, she is not a computer geek (she's a writer). Our secretaries were told "The icon for yuor browser is here, the icon for the word processor is here", and this was when Linux was still raw! I have been preaching the joy of Linux for years, but I'm talking to deaf ears. The company I work for now was a 100% M$ house..I secretly changed over all the servers to Linux. People were saying how fast the file server was..it shows up in Net Neighborhood SOO fast! Well, this did cause a big problem with management (and the NT admin) because what I did, made their decisions "wrong", and it became a pissing contest. They didnt care that the network is more reliable and i was able to RETURN 5 servers because they were no longer needed. I hurt some egos, so now I am on "indefinite" leave...oh well, The new company I will be working for WANTS a Linux network..maybe i can secretly switch over the user pcs too :)

    I haven't used a Microsoft product in 3 years and i do not miss it. I'm a Linux user (although I DO have a pc attached to the network I boot up w/ windows in case I get windows only stuff)

    I don't understand the addiction to windows...

    So I can understand why NOTHING on windows should be open source. If you have to shell out $3,000 for Visual Studio, or Zilch for any of the 50 programming langs on Linux, why would you give away the source for a program windows users will just incorporate into their own apps and give you the finger? Most windows users have no concept of free software, so make 'em pay!

    Since I am 100% M$ Free, in my data center, I have a machine for each distrubution. I like RedHat the least, prefer FreeBSD for a wicked-cool server, and use Mandrake and Debian for my personal PC's.
    I just wish commercial vendors can make GENERIC versions for dists other than Redhat. (ColdFusion Server is a prime example. Ever try installing that baby of Slack??)

    My Personal OS is a Mandrake Linux 7.1 system on a 600 MHZ 128 MB of ram..and this baby SMOKES!
    I installed Win2k pro before Linux as a test..it moved slow as hell (in comparison) with NOTHING running in the background. My Linux machine has ftp, Apache, Samba, and about 20 other crond stuff..and it's faster..

    I've been using *NIX for years, and about 3 years ago I decided to add NT support to our NOC.
    Having never used NT before, I decided to dive right in. An hour later, I had a well running NT server w/ all Serv packs. I said to myself.."people take 6 month COURSES on this thing?" I found it simple as hell, yet it pissed me off. To do anything it felt like I had to jump thry hoops to do what was insanely easy with *NIX.
    Now we begrudgingly have NT servers in our NOC.

    We've always been monitored concerning our netblock usage...If we want a new netblock, ARIN wants to know why....since we mostly do dedicated servers, we issue only one IP address to each box.
    Some want more than one and WE have to question them...since many of our customers get a linux box to do virtual hosting, we have to show them how to do name-based..because when you have 200 something dedicateds, it's not easy to issue each box 6 IP addresses!

    About 2 years ago, I took a class on C++ to learn Programming theory..I've been programming in various languages for years, but I knew my programming theory was lacking, and I always hit a wall. No school had ANY class on programming theory, or it was a level 400 class. I just wanted to take 1 class! So, after getting the refresher course on C++, I was pretty much in the same boat I was before. I know C++ really well now, but STILL with no concept of theory....

    Universities suffer many of the same problems as companies..they have a stuck-up punk who's using what he knows and insists on using the free box of NT server that was donated by Microsoft...at the University near me, the IT director didn't even go to that college...he was a recent MCSE and that piece of paper made him all-knowing :(

    When I upgraded my C64 to the Commodore 128D, it had a 1 MB HDD and came with GEOS, an DAMN good GUI OS.
    It resembled the Mac OS and the AtariST.
    Both GEOS and the AtariST OS's were worlds better than any crap MS produced, so how come they continue to exist?

    I agree it's the responsibility of the programmer..but Joe Sixpack doesn't see that. A friend who I talked into Linux said it sucked because NN kept crashing. I told him it's Netscape , NOT Linux that was the problem, then he said, but there exists only NN for Linux...I didnt have a reply (true, there is Mozilla, and ICE, but he wanted a "real" browser)

    People always seem to think UNIX is "difficult", it's not difficult, it's just "different"..you have to unlearn some bad habits. My girlfriend, who is just becoming computer literate (meaning..knows more then just MS WORD), has been using Mandrake Linux for a year. SHe installed it herself. Popped the CD in, and bingo, she loves it. Sure, she might need help compiling some software, but what IT staff member has NOT installed software for people on Windows? Using just a setup file? Easier than turning the darn thing on, but some people can't do it...ease is just relative.

    I have never met an MCSE who actually knew what he was doing. At the moment, my neighbor (who is 55), has NEVER touched a computer in his entire life, took the MCSE training, got his cert, and is now looking for a high paying job. HE doesnt know a DAMN thing. I had him come over to our office and install NT on a server for us for $25 an hour (this was a test)....8 friggin hours later, the server had NOTHING on it..it wouldnt even friggin boot. (Missing OS) The CD is SELF booting! A moron can install NT! (well, i guess not)..what do these certification courses teach people anyway? Oh, BTW, he's a "master" at Frontpage! ;) Oh no! He's extremely marketable now!

    umm...you're agreeing to the ads when you sign up..and it IS free..sort of like TV before Cable..free TV was paid for by ads..
    Anyhow, AOL costs alot of money in comparison to the other ISPs, and they display ads, but the thing is, you're PAYING for AOL...you shouldn't be subject to that.

    And colocation is usually the best thing. Better than a company getting their own T-1 sometimes. T-1's go down. Do companies have the resources to monitor the T-1 and servers 24-7? We do this, as well as a lot of colocation companies.
