They are giving it away for free because they finally realized that there is no market for their product. The market was thought to consist of Windows Delphi developers which would like to have a Linux version. However these people themselves didnt see a market in the linux community ( who really needs all those shareware apps, for many of them a free alternative exists, its a different user group etc. ) and so Kylix was sitting on the shelves unsold. They already had a big price reduction, not to the delightment of the few early buyers. Most people who write programs for linux use C, or C++ and this case they directly use QT. How many would have used Delphi if they had the choice? I dont think its many. I dont think this is good for QT, because Borland was probably their biggest customer. One posibbility of income for QT would be that Borland switches all their classes also in C++ builder etc. to QT internally, and gain a cross platform ( Mac, Win, X ) RAD development environment. This would be nice, since I really like the QT free edition, and someone has to pay for its development.

The chinese had the movable letter printing technique and the paper technique for maybe 500 years before the europeans invented it. Still, it did not lead to this takeoff of culture, the explosion of scientific breakthroughs etc.

Technology is shurely a conditio sine qua no, however a second important point is the climate of competition which reigned in europe from these days on. Contrary to China, europe and especially Italy at that time was shattered to small independent states each competing for advances in whealth, culture etc. After the loss of the churches position as the guardian of truth, the influx of the arabian knowledge together with the newly found technology of books enabled the dissemination of the newly found empirical insights and their discussion throughout europe (italy). This europe-wide discussion was facilitated by the common scientific language latin.

The important point was, that whenever the scientist or artist had a problem with the local authority, he could leave and find a different state in which he could complete his work, because a higher central political authority was largely absent (the church however was still there).

  11. Some librarys try to collect everything on Brewster Kahle & The Largest Library In History · · Score: 1
Some national libraries try to collect every published medium in order to preserve it for future generations.

For this purpose, from every published item, at least 1-4 parts have to be provided to the library. This includes books, daily newspapers and even school newspapers. (In the hindsight, maybe the reason for this institution was not preservance of things, but to be able to control and censor). However as far as I understood, they also neglected a lot of the published information: music, TV, radio, and the new, possibly very short lived internet sites.

These public institutions have to rearrange themselves quickly, so that all this possibly valuable information will be available in the future for everybody and access (for scientific or educational purpose) will not depend on the kindness of the companies that harvest this information now.
