A billionaire might prefer to take temporary nonlethal and nonpermanently impairing pain (e.g. whipping that does not cause major scars or permanent crippling) than be jailed for two years.
They understand very well the meaning of opportunity cost.
Everyone has on average 70-80 years, if you spend years in jail it starts to "hurt" even if it's not physically painful.
And sometimes it's not just about punishment. Say someone just can't control himself and might hurt people when he gets angry, so you put him in prison, don't torture him, let him have access to Internet, books etc, and let him do most stuff he likes - play games, watch movies, eat reasonably decent food. He just doesn't get to go out and be a danger to others. This way he might still be able to contribute to society or at least live a reasonably OK life while others can live their lives without being at risk from him.
a complete wipe and reinstall is the only way you're going to be certain you have a clean system. And this is one of the many reasons you can't get me to run Windows as my primary OS. Sure, I'll run it in a VM hosted on Linux, but no way would I rely on it for my every day computing needs on the bare metal. Fucking garbage without any kind of cogent security system is what Windows is.
Uh. How's that different from a root kit infection on Linux? AFAIK standard practice is if your machine (whether linux or windows) gets infected by a rootkit, you're supposed to reinstall. If you don't then you're just betting/assuming that the attack wasn't so serious. In most cases it isn't, and that's the same for Windows.
The problem is not restricted to Windows. There's a reason why rootkits are called rootkits after all, and not "NT Authority\SystemKits":).
Asa is one guy with strong opinions. He doesn't speak for all of us.
Seems like he just did in effect.;)
Anyway, maybe you all could commit to supporting 3.6 for a few more years and the enterprises might forget what Asa said...;)
After all not all the enterprises are going to give everyone "tablets" or similar devices with touch screens/GUIs.
Because many businesses are in the business of business. They don't change the UIs on their cash registers unless they think it's likely to make them more money. They just want the cash registers to have no bugs, and keep working.
Because they are engineers. Engineers know the appropriate units for energy vary depending on the circumstance.
The power companies tend to bill domestic users in kilowatt hours. The industrial users on the other hand are likely to have to watch their kVA as well.
And then there's the calorie and the Calorie/kcal too...
That used to happen to me because Google had double standards.
Basically the paywall journal sites would show Google a different page ("juicy info") from what they showed me ("login/pay $$$").
Often the info is available on other websites for free (not necessarily the same journal/article - could be different), but I would have to skip all the paywall crap to look for the sites that aren't.
If a person has problems controlling his/her actions then why shouldn't "Society" be allowed to exert more control over that person (e.g. jail, restrictions, loss of freedoms). Parents are essentially allowed to be near-dictators over their children till their children have "grown up".
And if anyone does something wrong and claims to not have free will, why should he/she be treated better than a faulty machine that has failed?
Would it be such a big problem? I used to play a mod called Prozac Team Fortress ( http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/Prozac-TF ). Most people don't keep changing their builds after a every respawn, so you just learn what they are doing/using and try to counter it.
Stopped playing after too many people used aimbots, and fewer and fewer people played.
BTW it's not my imagination that they were using aimbots. They could head shot me when I just jump off some place, or when I'm invisible with jammer.
BUT if I was standing right in front of them and jiggling rapidly side to side (very little actual net side movement), they couldn't even hit me for a number of attempts (could even taunt em;) ). A skilled human who can headshot falling targets with easy would be able to headshot me while I was doing that.
Democracy is crap, but so far it's better than the alternatives. I will abide by the decisions of the other voters (under protest if necessary;) ). If I can no longer accept it, then I would have to leave, since it is the collective voters' country to ruin/prosper as they choose.
Ruwart's proposal would not work in the current real world. Face it, if everyone was nice, even Dictatorships would be fine, since the Dictator would be nice and he/she wouldn't have to be harsh on anyone since everyone else is nice too.
That said there might be a theoretical way of making it work - eliminate all those who aren't nice enough.
It might not be considered a nice thing to do. But it could work if you had an entity/organization that was very powerful, long lived and was breeding humans for niceness.
Even so, there's no guarantee that the end result would still be good enough for Ruwart's proposal to work while maintaining long term viability of the species.
Dr. Mary Ruwart shows how force has dangerous unintended consequences, and how only by honoring our neighborâ(TM)s choices will we solve the worldâ(TM)s problems
In other words: "The world would be such a nice place if only everyone was nice". That's not what I call insightful or useful.
If your system only works if everyone is nice, then it doesn't work in practice.
What happens when someone stops honoring everyone else's choices and only cares for his private army with more firepower than everyone else in that district?
Who is going to stop him? Or are you going to honor his choice of gunning you down, taking your property, enslaving your women and children for himself and his army?
Force is inevitable, ask any thug or aspiring Dictator. The reason why many of us prefer democratic governments is it makes it harder (unfortunately not impossible) for the Dictators to take over.
There would still be force but it is monopolized by a democratically elected Government.
And last but not least, a democratically elected Government is easier to overthrow without force. If the voters vote differently, the Government is "overthrown".
And yes, if you're not a member of any org, you can infringe all you like. Problem is, nobody is defending you from infringement.
That's not always a problem.
1) What happens if companies in China infringe on your patents in USA, but the Chinese Gov prevents you from infringing on their patents when you're in China;).
2) Your proposal is in effect abolishing patents. Most businesses and people don't need patents protected to make money. The reason why they make money is not because of their patents. So they would not be members. I'm fine with the abolition of patents[1], but that's a pretty convoluted way of doing it.
[1] I personally think Prizes for Innovation would be a better way of promoting innovation and progress in the arts than patents. Since it is far easier to determine in hindsight whether something is innovative or not. And you could have prizes in each field (of many) chosen by experts in that field, and also separate prizes chosen by the public.
Patents reward the inventors of the obvious but not too obvious (to the examiners). Whereas prizes for innovation could still reward someone really innovative decades after the invention when people finally "get it".
So? If there's no government, I'm sure Larry Ellison has enough money to hire an army to "protect his interests" and be the defacto goverment in the territory he manages to control. Just look at history where powerful corporations operate in places with weak/nonexistent governments (I suspect there would be examples in Africa today).
If you don't like your elected Government you should try to get them voted out. Be thankful for that chance. You would have no option of voting Emperor Ellison or His Highness Steve Jobs out.
If your elected Government isn't being voted out, it means the other voters are voting them in WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. Too bad.
It's just less evil than the other options (other than the "option" of being lucky enough to have a benevolent and competent dictator).
There's no need to rely on a monopoly government. The question "who has standing" depends on the rules of the specific arbitration organization you're dealing with.
Huh? So if I'm not a member of any of the organizations I can infringe on any of the patents?
Saying there's no need to rely on a monopoly government does not make sense at all. Whether I'm a member or not, who is going to make me stop infringing? a) The Government? b) The armed employees/contractors of the organizations? c) Nobody can force me to stop? d) My customers who are not getting an inferior product?
Governments are entities that maintain a monopoly on violence in a particular zone. Whoever gets to force everyone in an area to comply to a law/rule is the defacto Government/Ruler of that area. There's a reason why some cannons have "Ultima Ratio Regum" inscribed on them - "The Ultimate Argument of Kings".
So anyone who thinks they can get rid of government is living in "la la land".
And anyone who thinks that quantity of Government matters more than quality is rather stupid. Saying smaller government = better government, is as stupid as saying fewer voters = better government.
Letting everyone vote doesn't necessarily produce a better government, but it means everyone on _average_ gets the government they deserve;).
Yep, the loss of freedoms can be significant.
A billionaire might prefer to take temporary nonlethal and nonpermanently impairing pain (e.g. whipping that does not cause major scars or permanent crippling) than be jailed for two years.

How about those people selling "air guitars" - the descriptions even say "air guitar"? ;) ).

FWIW, physicists in certain fields also use electronvolts.

Things appear to have improved a bit since. Nowadays normally at least I get the summary/abstract page with the keywords I searched for :).
Verbal explanation? You mean like "It's the industry standard/norm".
Do note that _western_ Europe was specified.

That's the way the UK, US and many countries do stuff:

Another approach is this:

Not really, he's a doctor, OTHER people are supposed to figure out what he wrote...
Firefox keeps telling me to upgrade to Firefox 4 but are there still memory consumption issues?
:).
Firefox regularly uses more memory than a whole windows/ubuntu virtual machine
Oh I stopped playing before they introduced the taekwondo thing. Seems that ruin the game balance or something.

Even so, there's no guarantee that the end result would still be good enough for Ruwart's proposal to work while maintaining long term viability of the species.
Just take this:
Dr. Mary Ruwart shows how force has dangerous unintended consequences, and how only by honoring our neighborâ(TM)s choices will we solve the worldâ(TM)s problems
In other words: "The world would be such a nice place if only everyone was nice". That's not what I call insightful or useful.

Right I'm sure Oracle and the rest would be quite happy to form a consortium to do it.
Yeah, right.
