someone who hasn't used Windows since version 3.1 could still get around pretty well in Vista or 7.
Try replacing 3.1 with 95. I'd argue that there was a big leap from 3.1 to 95 - namely, the start menu and taskbar - so I doubt you'd find someone who could do that. Things have remained relatively static since then though.
I agree with your nomination of The GIMP. I can't believe Paint.NET was included instead. The GIMP is far more functional and easier to use - and it's actually open source.
Good call on cygwin too - the saviour of my sanity at work!
Vista has a place in my home too, namely a PC as a dedicated media centre hooked up to my tv and stereo.
It's used for on demand tv software that requires windows, playing DVDs and video files and the occasional game. The system doesn't excel in any way, but it does the job without any problems and until the tv industry sees a need for linux support, it's a necessity.
It DOES give the option, but then it sits for ages "checking for solutions" and then thinking about whether it's REALLY going to end the task. Task manager is still often quicker.
I admit that I haven't checked recently, but it was certainly the case when my partner bought one earlier this year - we were only looking at laptops though.
For the record, in the UK at least, Dell's Ubuntu systems are significantly cheaper than the Windows equivalents. Even going for all the upgrades to get a far more powerful system works out cheaper.
You have a point. That shouldn't really be directed at AIM specifically, more instant messaging users in general. It may be different over there, but here they are primarily "cool" teenagers discussing parties and sex (and measuring their social standing by how many chat windows/tabs they have open at once).
Given that the link is clearly an executable file NOT a video file or a link to a page with streaming video, who would be stupid enough to fall for it?

A lot of core APIs were still forming then which exacerbates things.
There, fixed that for ya!
Not just blood - sweat too.
Don't use a fire extinguisher made in Britain though!

Oh yeah, AIM users.
"about as functional as Outlook" That doesn't strike me as being much of a selling point.
C average? As high as that?
And there I was thinking it was supposed to be "pore over". The ambiguity of poor English...
