You can kill a plane full of people with liquids that aren't explosives, you might even kill the pilots and crash the plane into the ocean. Put sarin in a thermos and just throw it down the isle mid-flight. Look at what happened in Japan on the subway with a couple small bags of nerve agent. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a plane with that stuff.
It's funny that terrorist == bomb to everyone.
Explosions are more dramatic, but not the only way terrorists can operate.
When I was in college I took a trip with a small class for a question and answer session with Edward Teller at LLNL. He said that one of the most important things in his mind for the scientific community to work on was weather prediction. He believed that being able to accurately forecast the weather months in advance could save countless lives and improve the global economy. He said that this should could be acheivable through improvements in computer simulation, much like the technology they use to simulate hypersonic flows in rocket engines or reactions in a nuclear bomb.
I believe that what he was saying was basically true. If you can establish months in advance that there will be a late freeze, or drought then you can adjust your agricultural time tables to account for it. Also you can protect people from a lot of natural disasters.
Imagine, if you will, taking this super-computing ability out a few years. Can the U.S. justify the invasion of a country X because X successfully simulated an attack on the U.S? Or maybe they just had the computing power to simulate it.
To the UN: We'd like you to look at these satellite images that clearly show a super computer simulating the destruction of the U.S. We have to take out these terrorists and we're willing to go it alone.
Afterward: Well it turns out that they didn't have the computing power at all, the images we had were of a mobile home park.

That sure doesn't seem like a farmers quantity of gold. Especially since they typically sell them in 500g and 1000g lots to people buying epic mounts/items. You might argue that they spread the gold around, but it doesn't seem very smart to be paying for 30,000 accounts when you only net ~$50/1000g. Unless they cycle through gold a lot faster than I can even begin to imagine.
It just doesn't seem like the order of magnitude is right for "farmers" so my guess is the majority of these banned accounts are hacking or botting.
It's too bad because I'd like to know how much gold a gold farmer could farm if a gold farmer could farm gold.
Actually the biggest _typical_ difference between passenger elevators and freight elevators has to do with the doors.
Most freight elevators have doors that part vertically. This allows for a bigger opening since the doors can go up and down the shaft a lot farther than they can into the walls in a horizontally parting passenger elevator. That way you can get big cargo or drive whole fork lifts into the elevator.
The safety features as far as falling down the shaft are identical.
There are other differences in the operation of the elevator sometimes, namely the way the buttons operate the car, but they are not significant.
The author correalates changing the extension of a filename to the changing of the file size. I often run across files on some macintosh machines that I maintain. If I didn't have the ability to change the file type I wouldn't be able to view or edit the data. Being able to readily change the viewer/filetype lets people read things the computer doesn't know how to handle.
Since when do we trust salon.com to post valid, technical information. Here is the truth about it.
Consider the fact that at 15000 miles per hour (22000 feet per second) that the interceptor has just.000045 second per foot of target diameter to hit it.
No matter how you predict the coordinates of the target, you will have to be exactly at x, y, z at the exact time required to hit it.
Remember that we hit the target at almost a 90 degree angle.
The transmission loop time for the GPS to tell where the target was "X" time ago will become too large.
We have a GPS satellite watching the launch and telling us its trajectory. However the interceptor has all kinds of radar, infrared, abc, xyz, and visual detectors to see the target anyway.
We don't need no stinking GPS to hit it.
That would be like using GPS to parallel park your car. It is nuts.
We do want the data from GPS after the hit to analyze each data point of the intercept.
Since when do people conduct experiments without collection massive amounts of data? Anything within reason is collected.
I agree that his points aren't well founded but your comment is the most retarded logic I have ever heard.
If you seriously believed what you posted you wouldn't be reading/.
There isn't enough time in the world for a person to learn/research/contribute to every aspect of knowledge. A lot of the time you have to read lots of other peoples reports and stories and draw your own conclusions. Most people can't afford to put a satellite in orbit and collect their own data, so instead they draw conclusions off the data supplied by other trusted scientists.
Why would you reinvent the wheel when the detailed blueprints and raw data from tests are already provided.
If you really think that everyone should have to do the experiments themselves, in every field, before they can have an opinion you're a moron.
Might as well try and build your own computer from raw ore out of the earth because otherwise you're just a "media blowhorn sporting a" computer over people who actually mine the ore and manufacture the materials to build one.
But what do you expect, when most of us are products of the government schools?
What a lame, unfounded comment. Do you think that any school asks the question, "Will you preach the evils of global warming?" to all their applicants?
NO! People are biased no matter what institution they work for. I doubt the diversity in "government" schools is any worse than private or otherwise. That's like saying that every teacher in a "government" school is a democrat. I can tell you for a fact that I've encountered equal numbers of democrats and republicans in my "government" schooling and all of them have differnt opinions on the environment.
Ironically, Americans aren't worried about the technological issues that are seriously changing their lives, and will increase in impact in the future
I can't quite figure out what you're trying to imply here. That all the technology that we create is somehow going to destroy us all? Boy, you better turn off your computer and run into the woods naked and sleep under a blanket of leaves.
Most of the technology that we create doesn't need to be worried about. Some of the people that use good technology to bad things should be worried about, but not the technology itself.
Experimentation and improvement is the foundation of the human nature. Clubs worked much better than fists to kill things. If it weren't for that kind of innovation the carrying capacity of earth would be MUCH smaller than it is now, by several orders of magnitude.
After entering a question for GAC it asks you a bunch of questions prefaced with:
Respond to the Potential Mindpixels below either True or False and rate their subjective Quality. Respond the way you think most people will respond, even if you think that the majority response is wrong. Do not skip any items. Do not use bots. Read the FAQ
Most of the questions are objective asking math formulae, simple logic questions etcetera. Do they really want subjective questions like the one I saw about the world being better off if all single mothers disappeared over night? If so why are they allowing 90% of their "mindpixels" to be objective questions with a logical, correct answer.
I also encountered a lot of non true/false questions. Do they monitor their mindpixel database in the slightest? Perhaps they should make all questions take a form of "Do you think it should..." or "Is it alright..."
This won't be so clear cut to you when your boss decides to fire you. At some point your going to be working on a huge, time consuming project that makes the company a lot of money.
You'll be salary and overtime will be expected, but just until the project is done. Finally the project is done and the company makes huge revenues. They decide however that they need some new functionality and you haven't had time to learn about it yet. They ask you if you know it and you say no, but you're willing to learn. They laugh at you and say "we don't train our employees, they provide us with a service." You now are out of a job that you could have easily kept if you had been training yourself in your free time, but wait the company didn't give you a whole lot of free time, and the free time you had definitely wasn't going to be filled with training yourself on something you couldn't forsee now would it?
So when you're jobless, homeless and stupid because you can't pay your college loans off and the technology has changed and no one will give the time of day I'll be laughing at you because my company values me and my ability to learn the things they want me to learn.
As with any criminal activity the person committing the crime will balance the risks of getting caught and the rewards of the crime. (Barring insanity; e.g. Mass murderers who eat people).
If a system like this can analyze the patterns and signatures of the "blackhats" it provides part of the solution. If it is combined with the tracing abilities to determine where to hack came from (a script kiddie using a local ISP in Dallas, Texas or hacker using a computer at his work)
There is the distinct possiblity that some people can get caught.
Currently the only people being tracked and caught are the big news story ones, of credit card theft from Barnes and Noble etc. If we can empower people to present a threat back at these blackhats then we can work to prevent more of them. Eventually if these types of traps are set up and successful on a larger scale home users can implement a smaller honeynet to keep people out or track those who do the crimes.
IMHO; computers will eventually be like Kwik-E-Marts or protective parents who video tape the baby sitter. All of the data will be tracked and stored and the analyzation tools will be easy enough that the person committing the crime will have a good chance of being caught. This will become more and more important as everyone gets always-on broadband connects attached to their home computers.

I noticed that the PDF mentioned several times that the Labels were losing lots of money as a direct result of the napster software. The only evidence used to prove this theory is the success of napster. Does anyone else wonder how record sales are going? If the labels are suffering so badly why not show some statistics listing really bad sales or even moderatley decreased sales, within a decent frequency over noise filter of course.
