    Oh well, i was going to moderate this discussion, but i guess not!

    I think your friend has had a harder time than most, though...

    If ISP level filtering didn't exist (MAPS, ORBS, etc...), if ISPs wouldn't cancel accounts on account of someone sending unsolicited email, then they wouldn't have to go to the lengths which they currently do to do their jobs. They wouldn't have to try to hijack someone elses mail sever. They wouldn't have to disguise their return address.

    They do now simply because of old-fashioned netiquette which is anti-spam... If they did use the same mail server, return address, etc, and every ISP did unsolicited blocking for their customers, then they wouldn't have a means of distribution.

    I think it's fine if you don't want spam. I don't want it either. But i think it should be the end users choice as opposed to some faceless systems administrator who works for the ISP they've signed up with...

    I've set up a rule that deposits any message with me not in the "To:" line to automatically be filed into my "Possible SPAM" folder. catches i'd say 90 to 95% of it right there... No big hairy deal.

    Alas, another poster mentioned that apple purchased NeXT, the original unveiler of the cube shaped computer... But it should be made clear that (I think, and no, my opinion doesn't really matter) Apple never chased anyone away from building all in one computers, they just went after the likes of eMachines, which made a computer called the eOne, which was indeed all in one, but also featured the use of transparent plastics in the same hues that apple was using, in the same exact spots on the case. ANd to top it off, they were advertising in Macintosh mail - order catalogs without a mention that they ran windows, and were hence incompatible with everything else featured in said catalogs.

    No, they didn't copyright a simple shape, they copyrighted (or whatever form of protection they used), the shape plus the colorings, etc... There are plenty of ofther form factors for all-in-one computers to follow (go find one of those Mac history sites, and you can see probably 6 or 8 other form factors apple has devised over the years). Nor did they copyright an all in one computer. And as far as i can tell, they've not copyrighted cube shaped computer either. The case may change when someone ships a 7" silver cube which sits atop a 1" clear plexiglass pedistle, but until then...

    No, i swear... when it asks you if you'd like to sign up for MSN, click the last option, which i believe reads "i already have an account i'd like to use", or something like that, it never mentions MSN again...

    Remember when software was labeled "requires IBM or 100% compatible PC"?

    Just in the main stream, how many variations are we now or soon facing?

    Pentium w/ MMX is the lowest common denominator...
    Intel's SSE instructions
    AMD's 3D-NOW!
    Aren't there separate instructions in the Athlon, like 3D-NOW2, or something?
    Now we're heading towards two different x86 64 bit implentations (yes, IA-64 isn't actually x86 anymore, but since they're bolting an x86 processor onto the silicon as well, it may as well be counted as one)...

    Either developers will continue as they've been doing, writing software for the lowest commmon denominator, which makes all of intel's and AMD's attempts to add features to their processors useless efforts, which ulitimately just cost us more money since they can't manufacture as many chips per wafer, or else we're going to start seeing "Windows/Pentium 4", "Windows/AMD", "Windows/64-bit AMD" and "Windows/Itanium" sections in compUSA and such....

    ANd before the oblicatory comment arrives, i'll state that no, i really would not like to compile my own software, which would be possible if everything ni the computing world was open source/GPLed/etc...

    Ummm, you know what? Windows and Mac OS 9 work just fine for me... Yes, i do have a machine running linux, but just as a staging area for websites... Basically all it's good for until we see more commercial application support, IMO.

    And looking around the office, there are 80+ people running Windows, no complaints, except from IT, who just think it's dumb that the servers are running Windows as well... That's agreed, but that's the extent of systems "not working"

    Well, perhaps I WANT to buy an HP Kayak WITH LINUX PRE-LOADED! Isn't it a violation of ME the CUSTOMER that I can't buy an HP Kayak with Linux preloaded?

    Sounds more like an issue you should take up with HP... Even if they've signed any agreement with MS to give other OS's less promotion or what not, it can't be all forclosing, in that they still do ship workstations with HP-UX installed (they do, don't they? :)

    If you want a Kayak workstation with Linux installed, let them know that. Then bite the bullet and buy elsewhere. Things like that might start swaying vendors, as the PC market starts crumbling away, they'll be a lot more interested in acquiring and keeping customers...

    Ummm sorry, i just toasted my Win 98 install two days ago, so i installed a fresh copy of Windows ME... Renamed my program files directory in order to be sure that i'd keep only the new components. Yes, after the install i had to sit through a 4 or 5 minute movie about why windows is great and all that, but after that, i just double clicked IE, told it use then LAN connection (i have a cable modem), and haven't seen mention of MSN since...

    I'm suspecting that if you went to start--->settings--->dial up networking, and enter the appropriate info for your ISP of choice, you'll see no mention of MSN again either...

    Well then, maybe you should start climbing back down the trees and showing the users the leather balls you found up there, rather than taking away the bushes they're playing with down there... or maybe even fashion a rope or ladder in order to help them on their way up...

    Anything but sitting up at the top of your "tree" and looking down at everyone else down on the ground while thinking "if only they knew what was up here...."

    Well, they're basically doing that with the tobacco suit by decreasing funding... Rather than supply the $58 million the DOJ wants and needs to continue through the appeals process, after they already have a guilty verdict, he's only allotted 1.8 million, hence killing the case...

    No... Those three have only subverted standards after they were established... Rambus seeked to (and basically suceeded) subvert a standard as it was being developed, by hiding the fact that the "suggestions" they were making to the DDR RAM consortium that they (Rambus) had already patented the "suggestions", until the day that manufacturing began (or so goes my understanding of it...)

    Yes, MS might not be nice because they take an "open" standard, add "MS" before it, and viola! have their own standard... But i've yet to hear of them pulling what Rambus pulled...

    and look where SGI is right now... 6 months of cash left, pushing Windows and Itanium machines... (what about VA Linux, they're doing really good, too, right?)

    What happened to the innovative company that was once SGI? They became box movers... Except they thought they could compete with the likes of Dell, who're already accustomed to razor thin margins and no spending on R&D.

    Yeah... Sun should forget all about developing an OS and great hardware, and switch immediately to shipping 1 to 2 processor Intel/Linux systems.... That's the ticket!

    I dunno about you, but I'd rather spend my money on kick-ass hardware to run my bloated GNU/Linux apps on than working on a prehistoric PC because I ran out of cash for the next decade after buying Photoshop and Visual Studio (and WindowsXP and OfficeXP and SQL Server - you get the idea).

    You do have a point there... Though i only wish that free alternatives for Photoshop (with CMYK, Pantone, Photoshop Plug-In support), Illustrator, QuarkXPress and Dreamweaver existed... But since i make my living with those, i have no qualms about spending what works out to being around $2500 a year on software in order to generate much more than that...

    At least windows (any version) doesn't require that much horse power in order to run it's GUI plus a web browser and word processor at a tolerable pace...

    IA-64 is VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word)

    The same thing as Transmeta's Crusoe, just optimized for a different goal (executing as much stuff in tandem as possible versus providing a low power processer).

    Yes, CISC and RISC processors seem to share more and more of the same philosophies, but they also went about their goals in different manners... This is really too bad, though, as it basically destroys one of only a few of Intel's competitors... Will it be legal fo rthem to purchase Sun and convert their entire line to Itanium as well, in order to build marketshare?

    did they get rejected for x86? i know they couldn't register 8088, 80286, 80386, or 80486 since those were just numbers, but once letters get added it might be a brand new ballgame... but then it could probably be shown that they haven't defended the x86 trademark....

    Yeah... It's probably that smart tags enable them to track user clicks, and with the EU's much stricter privacy guidelines, it just won't fly there.

    Too bad we don't get that same protection here. That is pure speculation, but it really does make sense in my mind, at least. RealNetworks wanted to know what we were listening to, Doubleclick wanted to know what sites we visit, and now Microsoft wants to know what our specific interests are...

    Yay! 2% margins... They sold 25.6 million in services to attain 600,000 in profits.

    sorry, but that's less than the interest on my checking account. and if i had untold millions to deposit, (they have the cash, they did IPO), i'm pretty sure a 7 or 8% (maybe even 10%, if you loan to the right people) interest rate isn't completely unattainable.

    And yes, people are feelinga crunch, but that just means their profits are falling down, only a few of the real (non-dot com) companies are actually losing money, it's just that they're not making as much as they were last year.

    give them 3 or 4 more years, if they're around still, then pat them on the back... Right now, they've just burned through millions in cash, and earned less on their sales than if that money was in bonds. not very successful.

    well, most images are static, so tux could handle the sending of images and javascripts, for instance, and leave the pages themselves to apache...

    I don't quite see the point, though... Most sites are fine. Any processor with an ethernet connection available these days can saturate a T1, for instance... And with hardware performance increasing as it does, it would seem that effort would be better spent developing easy to use frameworks for deploying web based apps, as opposed to making a really fast applet.

    But, it is always nice to see progress, and I'm glad that part of the credit is given to the kernel developers and their speed improvements in the 2.4 kernel over the 2.2 kernel.

    Yeah... I defitely can't wait until Redhat decides to integrate and X server, Gnome, Mozilla, and an mp3 player into the kernel as well.

    BTW, anyone know where the actual results are posted?

    Why? Apache's currently the market leader... 60% share, or something like that, so of course we're best served by them comparing it to the most widely used server...
