    Not a stupid question. One idea is to have the centre of gravity of the ladder in stationary orbit, so it extends in both directions from that point, reaching out into space and down toward the ground. Then there is no inertia problem. But material science still hasn't produced a manufacturable material strong enough and in sufficient quantity to do this.

    Interesting call. In "Total War", a one volume history of the 2WW, a theory was advanced that the Japanese capitulated because a Russian invasion force was gathering on the East Coast of the USSR. Food for thought anyway.

    Disclaimer: I work at an IP firm as a programmer, but not as a professional in the IP field.

    Before people post "Burn down the IP laws!", make sure you have a valid alternative that comes some way toward protecting the rights of creative people.

    As a model for handling commercial rights, which not too many creative people seem to mind having, intellectual property laws are not a perfect construction. Especially now we are trying to stretch paper rights around a digital wordl. But to the distant cousins of anarchists would like to see the whole system trashed (because destroying things feels good):

    Go and read Animal Farm and construct a good alternative before you go starting a revolution.

    Hehe! I wrote Jackhammer, one of the first commercial programs (before GetRight, etc.) to use REST instead of RETR to get FTP resuming files. Ah, the mammaries.

    If the house takes 10%, and the games are true games of chance, the player will approach a 10% loss of everything bet over a long enough time. Yet to meet a gambler who stopped because they won too much :)

    This is not meant to be flippant, but in Australia, in spite of the crap going on at the moment re our prime ministers fetish with the taste of arse, we have only 20 million people who are not inherently able to be abused by politicians for more than a couple of elections. In a two party system, we made one party run the country and in ALL the states we voted in the opposition. I think it's the best we can do to maintain a democratic balance of power. I met a few americans who have moved here and like it. We are probably most like Canada apart from the cold. We like full strength beer and sports in which people bleed. Anyway, I'd make you welcome if you "switched" :) But the government might not. D'oh.
